I worked with Ray Allen and had lunch with him every day, at first he seemed to be a grouchy old man but we found a love we both shared, wood turning, he taught me a lot and I guess I showed enough intrest he kept teaching me his way. I will always be thankful for his wood turning ability RIP Ray

Regarding end grain gluing, I've had some luck with first spreading glue then rubbing the joint tight, then adding glue and clamping the joint loosely. When you rub the joint the glue is forced into the grain leaving very little in the joint. Then adding glue and clamping more loosely keeps more in the joint that also bonds with the glue that is forced into the grain. Using this method requires a very good look at the dry fit and it takes a little longer, but I've had great results Hope this helps with end grain gluing!

Gord, just a thought, but a small roller would spread your glue more evenly, and quickly. You could even get a small roller pan and line it with plastic wrap for easy clean-up. Just a thought.

Gord, After making a few of this Indian blankets I think that i found the solution to prevent the glued ends from braking off after slicing. After the first glue up, meaning the trunked triangles and spacers, I glued a very thin commercial veneer on both sides of each strips. After the glue is dry I scribe a wavy line one one side to remind me how to re glued in the correct position after slice the strips in to 4 narrow strips. then I flip the strips and align the edges the same way you do. After the glue dry I eider use the drum sander to sand the veneers away or the table saw to shave the veneer out. I used the table saw because I can cut through all the glue squeeze out. I can send you pictures if anyone like them to visualize what I just explain.

Can I suggest using something like Araldite which is a two-part epoxy adhesive (usually used in boat-building) for glueing up. I've found this works really well on most timber projects that just require that something extra. Thanks for another great video, very beautiful work, thanks.

Great video, thanks for sharing this. I've been looking for a good tutorial for this design for awhile now. You may have tried this already, but on that end grain glue up, I've found that if you apply the glue to the end grain and wait 3 or 4 minutes then reapply it, it will help to prevent those dry joints as the end grain wicks the glue. I don't think I would dilute it. I've using this technique for awhile now, mostly on cabinets, but it will work on segmented stuff too. Depending on the type of wood. Some species will wick most of the glue into the wood in just 3 or 4 minutes. Then just apply more glue. The first coat is setup enough by now to greatly slow the wicking. Hope this helps. Lynn

+Steve .Cox All that does, Steve, is increase the size of the ring. As long as the pieces put between the segments are all the same thickness it won't change the "roundness" of the ring. If you are finding the length of segment you need for a specific diameter of ring you just need to deduct the .25" (or whatever thickness the pieces are) from the segment length. For instance if you are making a ring and need each segment to be 2.5" long you would need to make the segments 2.25" because of the .25" pieces you are using for contrast or to visually divide the segments. I hope this makes sense, Steve. I may not be explaining it very well. Sometimes I think I'm better at doing things than explaining what I'm doing. Take care, .....Gord

I would love to make one of these, but lets see, what am I missing? 1. no miter saw, 2. no drum sander, 3. no high precision table saw... what I do have is my lathe and my hobby table saw I was gifted by a neighbor after he had his share of finger tips sawed off with it... but also have a stubborn streak and some masochism to try this out with only the tools I have and hope it will be good enough to sit on my table, when I put it onto a bowl. :)

Gordon Rock Gordon, I'm not sure it's in my place to give you advice, but watching your video (again...) I was reminded of a tip I don't remember at the moment where I heard it, and I've never tried it myself, but will on my first go at segmented turning, but if you have some problems with wood pieces sliding about when trying to fasten them on glue up, you can sprinkle a little fine salt on the glue, and it will give some friction when you tighten the pieces so they won't move, and then simply dissolve and vanish... this could be interesting to try, which I intend to do.

No, I haven’t said anything about the SawStop. At least I don’t remember doing so! I know what you mean about the price. It is a significant investment but it does give a whole new level of confidence when using it. Before retiring I agreed to take a job for two years in a tool store because they let the employees buy tools at cost. Dear Gord, I have just watched this video for making the Indian blanket design and it is awesome. I have learnt so much from this that I feel that I may be able to do something similar but should be a lot smaller. One thing I did not understand very much due to being a new turner, the spacer that you used were cut with the grain matching the walnut, so where was the end grain on these spacers.
+Tarek Ammar Hi Tarek, The end grain is sandwiched between the segments. The glue is applied on the end grain of the spacers. The spacers were crosscut from the board I used. Excellent demo, as for the video length, 28 minutes is a good time investment for instruction of this quality. I haven't advanced to anything this complex yet, but someday I hope to. One of the things I need before I can tackle something like this is a drum sander, I'll likely try a DIY sander on my lathe, and maybe someday get a "real"one. I made a dizzy bowl recently, and it would have turned out much better if I had one for it to. Do you do FaceBook? There is a turners group on there that I joined at the beginning of the year called Woodchuckers, there are over 2100 people, of all skill levels on there. I'm sure your input would be most welcome. No problem, there are quite a few TH-cam turners on there so I figured it might be of interest. But I understand not liking social media, I'm not a big fan either, but it isn't bad for family contacts. I find it most annoying to get friend request from people I've never met and have no idea who they are,LOL Regarding this project, what you made is fairly large so I'm wondering if it scales down well or once it gets smaller would you switch to a different technique.
traog Gordon, I've never tried to scale it down. I'm not very good at working with thin strips; big clumsy fingers. I can't honestly think what different technique might be used to accomplish the same thing on a smaller scale. Sorry, I know I'm no help here.

Gord, what type of glue were you using when everything came apart? When I started segmented turning I used regular carpenter glue. The reason I ask is because my pieces didn't hold and came apart. I switched to Titebond III and I never had a separation again. Just a thought.
+Richard Katzman Richard, I use Titebond Original unless I'm working with something that will encounter moisture in which case I use Titebond III, as well. I don't blame the glue! Working with such small pieces is very difficult to get a good gluing. I have never had a problem with Titebond except when working with such small pieces, and then it's a rare problem. Gord, After making a few of this Indian blankets I think that i found the solution to prevent the glued ends from braking off after slicing. After the first glue up, meaning the trunked triangles and spacers, I glued a very thin commercial veneer on both sides of each strips. After the glue is dry I scribe a wavy line one one side to remind me how to re glued in the correct position after slice the strips in to 4 narrow strips. then I flip the strips and align the edges the same way you do. After the glue dry I eider use the drum sander to sand the veneers away or the table saw to shave the veneer out. I used the table saw because I can cut through all the glue squeeze out. I can send you pictures if anyone like them to visualize what I just explain.

Can I suggest using something like Araldite which is a two-part epoxy adhesive (usually used in boat-building) for glueing up. I've found this works really well on most timber projects that just require that something extra. Thanks for another great video, very beautiful work, thanks.
I have never heard of Araldite before. Thanks for the suggestion. I will check it out. Does it have enough open time to allow aligning the parts properly?

Great video, thanks for sharing this. I've been looking for a good tutorial for this design for awhile now. You may have tried this already, but on that end grain glue up, I've found that if you apply the glue to the end grain and wait 3 or 4 minutes then reapply it, it will help to prevent those dry joints as the end grain wicks the glue. Thanks again, great job.

I don't think I would dilute it. I've using this technique for awhile now, mostly on cabinets, but it will work on segmented stuff too. Depending on the type of wood. Some species will wick most of the glue into the wood in just 3 or 4 minutes. Then just apply more glue. The first coat is setup enough by now to greatly slow the wicking. Hope this helps. Lynn

Great video. When you place the .25" walnut pieces between each section, does that not mess up the finished 8 segment round spacing?

All that does, Steve, is increase the size of the ring. As long as the pieces put between the segments are all the same thickness it won't change the "roundness" of the ring. If you are finding the length of segment you need for a specific diameter of ring you just need to deduct the .25" (or whatever thickness the pieces are) from the segment length. For instance if you are making a ring and need each segment to be 2.5" long you would need to make the segments 2.25" because of the .25" pieces you are using for contrast or to visually divide the segments.
I hope this makes sense, Steve. I may not be explaining it very well. Sometimes I think I'm better at doing things than explaining what I'm doing.

Wonderful wonderful video, thank you so much for taking the time to make it so detailed. I would love to make one of these, but lets see, what am I missing? 1. no miter saw, 2. no drum sander, 3. no high precision table saw... what I do have is my lathe and my hobby table saw I was gifted by a neighbor after he had his share of finger tips sawed off with it... but also have a stubborn streak and some masochism to try this out with only the tools I have and hope it will be good enough to sit on my table, when I put it onto a bowl. :)

Gordon Rock Gordon, I'm not sure it's in my place to give you advice, but watching your video (again...) I was reminded of a tip I don't remember at the moment where I heard it, and I've never tried it myself, but will on my first go at segmented turning, but if you have some problems with wood pieces sliding about when trying to fasten them on glue up, you can sprinkle a little fine salt on the glue, and it will give some friction when you tighten the pieces so they won't move, and then simply dissolve and vanish... this could be interesting to try, which I intend to do.

Gord, I was replaying this video (it’s a beautiful piece) and noticed your table saw. Have you ever chatted about the not insignificant decision to go with a SawStop? As a hobbyist, I struggle with such an investment. I know, how much do I value my fingers, eh? ....
No, I haven’t said anything about the SawStop. At least I don’t remember doing so! I know what you mean about the price. It is a significant investment but it does give a whole new level of confidence when using it. Before retiring I agreed to take a job for two years in a tool store because they let the employees buy tools at cost. I was amazed at the number of tools that I didn’t know I needed! 😁😁😁

Dear Gord, I have just watched this video for making the Indian blanket design and it is awesome. I have learnt so much from this that I feel that I may be able to do something similar but should be a lot smaller. One thing I did not understand very much due to being a new turner, the spacer that you used were cut with the grain matching the walnut, so where was the end grain on these spacers.

The end grain is sandwiched between the segments. The glue is applied on the end grain of the spacers. The spacers were crosscut from the board I used. I hope I've made it clear enough. Excellent demo, as for the video length, 28 minutes is a good time investment for instruction of this quality.
I haven't advanced to anything this complex yet, but someday I hope to. One of the things I need before I can tackle something like this is a drum sander, I'll likely try a DIY sander on my lathe, and maybe someday get a "real"one. I made a dizzy bowl recently, and it would have turned out much better if I had one for it to.
Do you do FaceBook? There is a turners group on there that I joined at the beginning of the year called Woodchuckers, there are over 2100 people, of all skill levels on there. I'm sure your input would be most welcome.

But I understand not liking social media, I'm not a big fan either, but it isn't bad for family contacts. I find it most annoying to get friend request from people I've never met and have no idea who they are,LOL
Regarding this project, what you made is fairly large so I'm wondering if it scales down well or once it gets smaller would you switch to a different technique.
traog Gordon, I've never tried to scale it down. I'm not very good at working with thin strips; big clumsy fingers. I can't honestly think what different technique might be used to accomplish the same thing on a smaller scale. Sorry, I know I'm no help here.

Gord, what type of glue were you using when everything came apart? When I started segmented turning I used regular carpenter glue. The reason I ask is because my pieces didn't hold and came apart. I switched to Titebond III and I never had a separation again. Just a thought.

Richard, I use Titebond Original unless I'm working with something that will encounter moisture in which case I use Titebond III, as well. I don't blame the glue! Working with such small pieces is very difficult to get a good gluing. I have never had a problem with Titebond except when working with such small pieces, and then it's a rare problem.
