    An absolutely stunning bowl Gord, your quest for perfection is relentless, us lesser mortals would possibly have left that "little" concave area, for fear of taking one pass too many ;). Great series my friend.
    Take care

      I don't know about perfection, Mike, but I do believe in doing the very best I can and try not to settle for less. Sometimes I get much less. :-)
      Thanks for the kind words; I'm glad you liked the results.
      All the best, Mike,

    Nothing like being behind the times, just 5.5 - 6 years. I have enjoyed watching this video immensely Gord. Your attention to detail constantly amazes me together with your carefully & accurately constructed commentary make for an amazing 40 minute entertaining & educational video. I think the finished product is amazing and so pleasing on the eyes. Anyone would be proud to have this piece on display in their home. I feel I would like to say more but am lost for words except to say 'thanks for sharing this video & you skills'. Don from South Aust.

    Great! I'd like to try this, but probably not for a beginner! Just getting the center ring done would be an accomplishment.

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were all beginners at one time, Rose. After a few hundred (thousand?) hours of practice I felt it was time to start doing more complex work. I'm sure it will be the same for you. Any turner who says he/she can't do it simply hasn't put in enough hours practicing. Luckily, I've always enjoyed turning so spending many hours in front of the lathe has never been a chore.
      I hope you will have as much fun turning as I do. Thanks for watching, Rose!

    Thank you Gord for a superb and very sophisticated piece of turning. I thought I was making progress as a turner but you've floored me completely. On the other hand you've pushed me to always aim for something higher.The finished item is just beautiful.The only thing I can contribute is about some turners not finishing projects to perfection. I've been in a very good wood turning club for just under a year. Each month we have a competition and the principal judge is a guest demonstrator and I mean people such as Cindy Drozda. I've managed to scrape a few third prizes and one of the things I've learned is boy, you need to have your finishing done to perfection. No unsanded bases, no sanding marks and so on.It has pushed me to a standard I never thought myself possible of.Happy turning.Many thanks,Alan.

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alan,
      Congratulations on your prizes. Third prize is certainly a good step in the right direction. I had Cindy Drozda critique one of my pieces once and was flattered that she actually liked it. Sure could make it hard to put my hat on if I wore one ;)
      Thanks for watching, Alan. I really appreciate the support!!!

    A perfectionist is never happy with his work but I think it is splendid and it was intriguing watching it come together. I was thinking about ceramic pots while I watched and it struck me that both start from materials that do not resemble the end result, Watching both forms take shape is like watching the birth then growth of a child to adulthood. amazing work. you rock Gord! 🙄

      Oneway 2436. Going from a 3/4hp 12" to a 3hp 24" is going to be awesome. It should be here sometime in October. My current lathe is alright but it is under powered for some of the things I try to do. I could have gone with the 20" but it was only $300 difference so I went bigger.

    What a wonderful piece! Your attention to details was great. What was the actual elapsed time, not counting the feature ring, to create this vessel?

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't really tell you how long it took to do. I was doing a number of other things at the same time and setting up lighting and camera equipment adds a lot of time, as does the video editing. Discounting that I would guess it would take me a little over a week but then I also don't work 8 hours a day at it. I'm retired and work slowly and as I feel like it. So I'm afraid I can't give you a good guess at the number of hours I put into a project like this. Also, if I knew how many hours I spent on a segmented project I may not want to do them anymore. Sorry I can't be more helpful with your question.

    Great bowl Gord. Question from a new turner...why the "floating" ring?

      Hi Gary,
      A floating disc removes the problem that can occur when using a segmented bottom due to expansion/contraction movement of the wood. Although the segments on the body of a turning don't seem to show any movement the bottom will often show a shifting of the segments over time. I've had a number of pieces that were perfect when finished but after a few months holding up the bowl or vessel and looking at the bottom with a light behind there would be light visible between some of the segments. A floating disc alleviates that problem. Also, some turners like to use a solid piece for the bottom but there again the shifting of the wood can cause it to crack because all the way around the wood is being held by the body it is glued to. I hope this answers your question.
      Thanks for watching!!
      Take care,

    Thanks Gord. So if the bottom s one solid piece, not segmented, it won't move?

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, that's not what I mean. Wood will contract and expand no matter what you do. If a solid bottom is glued to a segmented piece, at some point the movement of the wood can cause a crack to develop SOMEWHERE on the piece. Because the grain direction of the segments is constant the pressure will USUALLY cause the bottom to crack. But that's not a hard and fast rule. It COULD cause the side of the piece to crack. Ray Allen, one of the best segmenters there ever was, used solid bottoms and had very good luck with them. Cracking MAY never occur! It is just a possibility and the floating disc removes that possibility.
      Hope this makes more sense.
      Take care,

    Azon a kis lyukon mit lehet bele tenni, és kivenni belőle? Szép munka, csak értelmetlen. --What can be put in and taken out of that little hole? Nice job, just pointless.

      The vessel is not meant to contain anything as it is just an art piece.
