    Man, that must be a hell of a thing to stand next to when it launches, let alone racing it. I don't personally know the different classes of dragster, or the power it's putting out, but it's great to watch. And it didn't disappear up the road as so much as slowly pull away from the Plaid. the rail was already running, it's engine's mass was already in motion, you had to start your motors from a dead stop. try building it so the motors run full time with a clutch, than rev them before the launch, the outcome will be different.

      @TeslaPlaidChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      His gearing won’t let him run the full 1320 feet, as the engine would hit redline in top gear long before that 👍

  • @deanmcmanis9398
    @deanmcmanis9398 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Well, you know what the next competition tier looks like now. I enjoyed watching that! I mean it's a DRAGSTER!. Sure, he walked away from you. But if you were in your average fast car, he would have just been a dot at the end of the drag strip. The Plaid already creates a surreal racing experience compared to normal, or even fast cars. But this dragster is clearly at another level. 🏎☢

    • @TeslaPlaidChannel
      @TeslaPlaidChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And worth noticing, if the Dragster did shut down right at the 1/8th mile (which is what is sounds like in the video), then his "top speed" on this pass was roughly 133-135MPH (time slip says 132.6MPH at the 1/8mi trap). Meanwhile the Plaid hit 150.6MPH at the 1/4mi trap and and 157 indicated after the trap. So while the *quickness* of this Dragster is beyond any doubt, what is its actual "top speed" capability with its current gearing? Perhaps a fair amount below the Plaid? We know these guys are very motivated to set their gearing to hit redline in top gear at the distance they are racing to (for maximum quickness). So maybe 135MPH might be all that this Dragster can do in its current configuration? I'm not saying the Plaid would run a 5.30ET in the 1/8mi if geared for a 135MPH top speed, but it would certainly run faster than the 5.90s that it currently runs (with the current Plaid gearing that supports well over 200MPH).

    • @TeslaPlaidChannel
      @TeslaPlaidChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@logan594 The dragster has the chute, and note that even Top Fuel dragsters don’t run the full 1/4 anymore, they run 1000ft only. And at this track, all the fastest cars seem to run 1/8th mile only. We fully understand. For those of us that run thousands and thousands of passes, going 150+MPH that frequently is a *much* more serious safety risk for just a recreational hobby. It takes *4* times more energy to stop a car from those 1/4 mile speeds vs 1/8th (whether stopping it via the brakes or a jersey wall 😳)

    Based on the horsepower calculators that dragster is only making a little over 600 HP. Interesting matchup.

    • @TeslaPlaidChannel
      @TeslaPlaidChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s why the dragster has a far superior power-to -weight ratio, as it weighs about 1400 pounds. Each HP is only pulling slightly more than 2 pounds, where the Plaid, even with the weight removed, is still over 4600 pounds, for well over 4 per HP.

  • @royrauch9775
    @royrauch9775 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I thought your gutting would at least get you into the 9.0x range, do you feel it was worth it? That Canadian firm that ran a 8.77 is supposed to be selling Something ( a new chip?) that may be available for a Plaid to run basically as a Plaid + mode. Have you explored that option? Believe it is Ingenext Auto in Quebec. Might be worthwhile to look at their website!....Also like to make note that the C8 Corvette twin turbo by LMR last weekend ran an 8.83 at 160 MPH, certainly like to see a PLAID BEAT that impressive mark!

    • @TeslaPlaidChannel
      @TeslaPlaidChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      👍 The specific weight that we removed was most definitely worth it. We are consistently faster than any of the stock Plaids at the dragstrip (we are running 9.15-9.25 while they run 9.35 and up, or slower with 21” wheels). Meanwhile, there’s no reduction in comfort at all. Both Tesla front seats remain (no one had ever ridden in our backseat in a full year). All airbags remain. All 20 stereo speakers remain. All mirrors (inside and out) remain. The center console remains. The dashboard remains. Both display screens remain. It remains more comfortable than a Corvette 👍
      Meanwhile, my friend Miguel took gutting to the limit. Not remotely NHRA legal for about 5 different reasons (airbags, mirrors, modified brakes, no cage, no dashboard warning lights, maybe other reasons, seatbelts?). That’s all fine for him, but we prefer to stay NHRA legal so that our THREE local tracks that all very actively *restricted* us last year (BMP, OSW, Gainesville) don’t have a reason to restrict us again. If we did half of what Miguel did, then we’d only be able to run at our 1/8th mile track (Showtime).

    • @TeslaPlaidChannel
      @TeslaPlaidChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      👍And I’ll ask Miguel about that Plaid + modification next time I talk to him. (He’s the 8.7 Plaid in Canada)

    • @TeslaPlaidChannel

      They don’t fold flat by a long shot. They are actually *less* aerodynamic when “folded”, because you get a large flat and blunt front edge instead of an aerodynamic front facing edge. The “folding” is only to reduce width for parking and such. If you Google an image of a folded Model S side mirror, you’ll see what we mean…

      Super-quick for sure, but then it’s called “running out of gear”. His top speed is likely around 135MPH, so he hits red line after 1/8th mile. (Racers gear their cars to be as quick as possible within their racing distance only.) The Tesla went over 150MPH, even 157MPH after the traps. Maybe a good 20-30MPH higher top speed than the dragster. What would a longer race look like? 🤔

What we no for sure - the Plaid is a purpose built performance vehicle that represents some of the best EV technology on the planet today. It's also worth noting that the dragster is far from the best technology available today in the ICE world but still really cool to watch!
