  • Are Oakley Sunglasses Worth It? We Put them to the test.
    SportRx visited the Oakley headquarters and met Stephen De Mille, who took us to their testing facility and showed us the testing Oakley eyewear goes through. Stephen shows us some optical tests, tells us how Oakley's Plutonite lens material is made and also shows us some impact protection and durability tests.
    1:01 Laser test measuring how curvature and lens shape affects light passing through the lens
    4:48 Scope testing for lens clarity
    7:45 Plutonite lens material
    10:07 Impact protection

      SportRx I did. They fell from 2 foot and landed on thick Carpet and the cheap lens shattered. Worst $170 I’ve spent.

    • @sportrxeyewear
      @sportrxeyewear  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dang! From two feet and on thick carpet, for their lens to shatter (like glass?) is some kind of anomaly! Definitely, reach out to Oakley; they will help you. I have never seen their lens material shatter. I would have thought it impossible, so the fact that they did should be proof enough that they will replace them immediately.

    The impact test is pretty accurate. I was using a weed eater and a rock the size of a quarter hit my lens on my flak 2.0 and it didn’t shatter. It simply left a small dent on my lens. Could of lost an eye or damaged it pretty bad.

    • @xKrispyx

      I've used my Flak Jacket XLJ's as "safety glasses" in a pinch. Wouldn't have done that with any other brand of "sunglasses"...

    • @mybluebelly
      @mybluebelly 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I shot a 177 airgun pellet at a pair of $10 sunglasses. There was a small dent in the lens but that`s it. So your theory about shatter resistance only in expensive glasses is very wrong. Plexiglass is not very expensive.

    I can attest to this. I've had dirt, rocks and debris launched at my eyes. While wearing Oakley sunglasses, never had an injury. Sure, they are expensive, but I would rather pay for sunglasses than have to pay for eye surgery. I wear Holbrook and Radar EV frames. The polarized lenses are great, especially if you get prizm built in.

    • @sportrxeyewear

      You are 100% correct David! People will pay the money for the bike, shoes, helmet, but not protect their eyes. Take it from David, it's worth paying the extra buck especially for some PRIZM lenses.

    13 years ago when I was in high school, I bought a pair of 1st Gen Half Jackets because I thought they looked cool. I really didn't have much knowledge on Oakley at the time. Well, some time later they actually saved my eyesight. A friend of mine accidently discharged a paintball gun he had just bought and the round went straight towards my face. The Half Jackets deflected it onto the floor and instead of a hosptial visit, I ended up with a slight headache and a cool story to tell. It since made me a very strong believer in the effectiveness of Oakley Sunglasses.

    • @natewilson84675
      @natewilson84675 7 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      Actually luxottica bought them out because Oakley refused to sell through them but luxottica owns glass hut and about 97% of eye wear stores so it put oakley in a bind where they had no choice but to be bought out. The only good thing is that oakley still designs all their own stuff so luxottica can't wash the quality down with inferior products

      Yeah, I gotta disagree. I sell Oakleys and a lot of Luxottica products through my job. Also we sell non Luxottica stuff. The Lux stuff is pretty much garbage. Mostly made in China "even Oakley now, check out there avoidance of stating it under here: www.oakley.com/en/support/faq (CAN OAKLEY EYEWEAR BE STAMPED WITH A MARKING OTHER THAN "MADE IN THE U.S.A.?")
      Iv'e also seen the old "Made in USA" stuff, and its far better quality. The only thing that didn't take a huge hit is the lens quality. The frames are junk though.

      Yeah i worked at oakley hq for 2 years here in foothill ranch. The quality decreased because the materials they use are of cheaper Chinese quality. I coated over 40000 lenses and inspected over 5000 frames so thats how i was able to know .

    Hey Rob, firstly, love the channel- you guys ultimately talked me into buying the flight decks, which I'm in love with. But, I recently bought some Holbrooks and was looking into new lenses (because I'm a child and I need all the lenses) and came across Revant AML. Do these guys build lenses to the same specs as oakley? I prefer to keep to oakley lense anyway but was curious

    • @sportrxeyewear
      @sportrxeyewear  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Dylan! We cannot speak to the quality of Revant product specifically because we are not familiar with it. However, it would be impossible for any brand to build lenses to the same specs as Oakley because so much of the technology that goes into Oakley lenses is proprietary. Oakley High Definition optics and impact resistance is very hard to beat. Not to mention all of the awesome PRIZM lens options that are available!

      Would you not say that although the film coming off your lenses is a bummer, the fact that you have had your oakley's faithfully serving you for
      five years is a well- made investment?

    Hi guys slightly off topic here, but I love my Oakly Prizm trail lenses for normal trail mountain biking, but i want some goggles that have the same technology to ride downhill in the Alps. Does this exist and if not would the Prizm MX be the best alternative?
    Thanks

      We recommend checking out the Prizm Rose snow goggle lens. Below is the link to the review we did on the Rose lens while the team was in Mammoth with Oakley.

      ...and as any ‘good’ commercial, they highlight the strengths of the product:
      1. Optical Clarity, and
      2. Impact Protection.
      even with the takeover by Luxotica, ‘Oakley’ seems to keep the same standards.
      I’m sold.

      The product stands up mate take it first hand from me. I crashed in a pair and the frames and lenses did not break on impact

      It doesn't apply to every Oakley frame, no. You would be in good shape if you were looking to get one of their sport frames.

    this video is why I choose to wear Oakley and have been wearing them most of my life but all the benefits behind their testing to make sure your eyes see clearly through their lenses and your eyes are protected if objects come flying at your eyes

      A pair of $20 safety glasses or even cheap budget polycarbonate sunglasses would do the same. Oakley is not performing any miracles here.

    does the impact safety also work for the radar ev pitch?

    • @sportrxeyewear
      @sportrxeyewear  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. You have the same material and construction on the Radar line. They will be able to withstand their same standard of degree of impact.

      All of Oakley's glasses are going to give your their HDO (high definition optics), so they are all laser precise!

    Can I go to an Oakley store and get my precscription done in Oakley frames while I wait?

    • @sportrxeyewear
      @sportrxeyewear  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is not a service that Oakley offers. The Oakley lab is in Southern California. The majority of Oakley retail stores, if any at all, do not offer any prescription lens services. You will almost certainly need to take those frames to an Oakley prescription dealer.
      The good news is that we can help with that! Give us a call anytime! 888-831-5817
