Vince Carter is a legend. The highlights are a given. The crazy dunks drew everyone in but he really had a fantastic skill set especially on offence. The second half of his career as a player-mentor-coach was equally interesting to watch. His growth and ability to remain a part of the NBA for so long is impressive and shows how appreciative he is and how much he loves ball. I supported him even when he was not “wanting to dunk” and not giving it his all in the last part of the Toronto career. He could have handled it better but I knew there was more to the story. He was a young man and Raptors management could have done more to keep him happy here. Regardless, there are so many Toronto (and Canadian for that matter) hoopers that got their spark from Vince. His impact on Canadian basketball is undeniable and I am damned grateful to have witnessed Vinsanity while a young person in Toronto at that time. It was special. Congrats Vince!! Well Deserved!!
Having Vince Carter’s jersey retired with the Toronto Raptors is the greatest accomplishment in NBA history. He was the one called half man half amazing, he put on a show in the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest, and he gave up his starting spot to the GOAT Michael Jordan in the 2003 All Star game. Without his recognition, the Raptors would have been a miserable franchise, not drafting superstars they had like himself, Chris Bosh, and DeMar DeRozan. Not getting great veterans like Kyle Lowry, Kawhi Leonard, Marc Gasol because they don’t want to play there. Plus they would have not gotten a championship at all for the organization. He was the quintessential superstar of putting Toronto on the NBA map worldwide, letting players know the organization is a fun place to play, and building a legacy in Canada.
I know he didn’t leave Toronto on the best terms but it’s great to see Vince being welcomed back into the Raptors family and having his jersey retired.
It's undeserving. I can't think of another franchise honoring a player who accomplished so little. Typically jersey retirement criteria involves MVP award(s) and/or multiple All NBA/Defensive team honors and/or Championships and/or All time leader in major stats categories... What player in the history of the league has this resume and his jersey retired??... This doesn't make any sense objectively. Lowry, Derozan gave their all during their tenures. Accomplished much more in the playoffs.
