Spanish and Go I think what helps me most is watching the close up video of how your tongue is working while you roll your rr’s. It’s the best close ups I’ve seen. It’s really helpful because when you get the mechanics right, the results come easier. I get it right sometimes then sometimes I lose it and come back to watch until I find it again. Holy cow…. I have watched countless videos on how to do this and this is the first one that got me somewhere! I can do the tiniest of trills now! Thank you so much for the great tips! I will keep practicing.
for some people having issues, its not moving your tongue up and down but basically vibrating it. Don't focus on vibrating just the front of your tongue, vibrating the base/entirety of your tongue will vibrate the tip of your tongue the correct way. Its not like the french R where you kinda vibrate the back of your throat/ upper back mouth, but do it below. Make sure your tongue is slightly curved upwards, barely behind your front teeth on the ridge so you can get the more predominant rolled R sound
What helped me with both the tapped and trilled R (alveolar tap and trill) was to focus on mastering the trill first, because the tap is mostly a cinch after that. (My examples are in Latin, my current language study, but work perfectly for Spanish, Albanian or any language with an emphatic trill))- Try the alveolar ‘R’ three times a day, four ways- 1) first as a trill without vocal sound, just whirring tongue vibrations-like a kid pretending to have moth wings: R.r.r.r.r.r.r.r.r . . . for 15 seconds. 2) then vocalize the trill, with a musical delivery, up and down like a melody, with “R” its only word: 🎶 R.r.r.r.r.r.r.r. . . . another 15 seconds. 3) then as it appears in a real word, sandwiched between vowels, as in acerrimo, asperrima, erratus, ferrum, incorruptum, marra, narrabant, perrumpo, turrigerum, varro. 4) then try tapping the ‘r,’ especially where it sits adjacent to a consonant; either preceding or following a consonant requires some lingual gymnastics, as in arbitrarius, barbarorum, circumscribo, gradior, miratrix, perscriptor, propriorum, quartarius, sacratur and transire. Those short exercises take less than one minute, three times every day. After five months, stop exercising for a few weeks so your brain begins missing the routine. Then one day, casually read some material en Espanol. ¡Tu 'R' alveolar sonará como Frida y Diego en Cuernavaca!
I learned the soft r pretty quickly, it's the trilled r that I have problem with. A few years agi I wondered how people were able to purr like a cat, th is seems related to it.
I had been trying to get this right for ten years. Finally got it!. It gets MUCH easier if you do it in front of a mirror, so you can see your tongue in the right position.
Thank you for an incredibly informative and helpful little video. You both convey upbeat "I know you've tried but you can do it" personalities. I've been trying to roll my r ever since my 1st crush on my Latinx homeroom teacher in elementary school! When you compared the mistaken sounds you can get to the correct one that was very helpful! I hope you and yours are safe and symptom free. Be safe, take care, thanks again--muy útil!!
I'm teaching my granddaughter Spanish and was trying to show my her how to roll her r's, but since I don't remember ever learning how to do it, I was having a tough time explaining, I just do it. I was trying to get her to make a motor sound, but that's like still like explaining how to breath. Thank you for the explanation and the exercises!
I've never been able to roll my r's before, but after spending some time doing the "camarón caramelo" practice so I could get used to the "r" sound, and then putting extra emphasis on that sound, I actually got it!
I am Vietnamese and I remember I used to be able to roll the R's perfectly the Spanish way when I was a child. My mom taught me and I would do the sound for fun occasionally. But then I grew up and tried to learn English, Japanese, Korean and French with each language's own R pronunciations - and now I am trying to learn Spanish only to find out that old ability is completely gone!! So confused and frustrated really. Maybe the R's of the other languages have made my tongue become so lazy, weak and stiff... :(
After about 10 months, I came back to this video and I did it!!!! LIKE YESS. Omg from this experience you really need to practice like deliberately. Everyday before going to bed. It would take me lesser time if I didn’t give up after two weeks of practice. I just want to say that it works
I'm tired of everyone in this household making fun of me for sounding like a blanquita when i speak. My mother in law has a lot of nerve for someone who calls corn flakes com flex😒🙄
@DewGetRekt This person just means don't say the 'tt' like the 't' in 'tick', which is how you would say it outside of America. Note 'an' is the indefinite article. ie, suggesting that any American accent will do.
You explained this better than three years of high school Spanish ever did. It makes so much sense. Didn’t realize the soft R was formed differently. English R comes from the throat. Plus I’m from Boston so my English R isn’t great to begin with!
Sometimes I think you have to try thinking of something else while doing it. When I try too hard I can't do it. (A bit like when you try and remember where something is and it's only when you give up and go out of the room, it suddenly comes to you)
I learned how to pronounce the single "r" by accident. I just kept saying "encantada" faster and faster. After a few seconds "encantada" became into "encantara".. idk how it happend but this is how I learned lol. So basically the "r" sound is just a veeeery fast "d", for example when you say edit you actually say [eryt]
NOTHING WORKS FOR ME. I have never been able to roll R's, is this the Spanish equivalent of a lisp? I just try to say the double R words with an extra d sound to get through the word fast. It sort of works.
I know it can be frustrating. It takes practice and experimentation. There are native Spanish-speakers who talk with a lisp, and there are native Spanish-speakers who can't roll their rs. Try changing the pressure and shape of your tongue. You'll get it eventually! Thanks for watching! Saludos desde México. -Jim

As an Australian English speaker, I have had to brute force the R as I've begun to learn Spanish. We don't do really do much tongue rolling in Aussie English. The second technique is a great step forward for me. The rrrrrolling trill is hard, but the two fast soft R's technique is not hard and with practice I should get more fluent. Thank you!

Wow! Of all the videos i've watched, this is the first one to help me actually start making the trilled r! Thank you! Awesome advice!
Lindsey Tubbleville that’s fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing. We’re glad this worked for you. Un saludo. -Jim
for some people having issues, its not moving your tongue up and down but basically vibrating it.
Wow, this rolling R practice is so helpful! I have a tied tongue and have considered surgery just that I may speak more clearly. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
I’m learning Spanish and I need to learn it for band because I need to flutter in a concert piece. I’m going to keep practicing this thanks!
The second tip actually worked for me! Really good idea to separate the word; thank you so much guys 😄
Nina Salorian that’s great! We’re so glad we could help. Thanks for watching and letting us know this worked for you. ¡Saludos! -Jim
Did you gotten results Nina? Im trying it now
What helped me with both the tapped and trilled R (alveolar tap and trill) was to focus on mastering the trill first, because the tap is mostly a cinch after that. (My examples are in Latin, my current language study, but work perfectly for Spanish, Albanian or any language with an emphatic trill))-
Try the alveolar ‘R’ three times a day, four ways-
1) first as a trill without vocal sound, just whirring tongue vibrations-like a kid pretending to have moth wings: R.r.r.r.r.r.r.r.r . . . for 15 seconds.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words! We're glad you found it useful. ¡Un saludo! -Jim
I'm teaching my granddaughter Spanish and was trying to show my her how to roll her r's,
but since I don't remember ever learning how to do it, I was having a tough time explaining, I just do it.
I was trying to get her to make a motor sound, but that's like still like explaining how to breath.
Thank you for the explanation and the exercises!
We’re so glad to hear this! Thanks for sharing. 😊 We’re glad you found it useful. Un saludo. -Jim
I dont even speak Spanish. I just want to learn this because it sounds cool.
that’s interesting! i also started learning japanese and korean, which i thought may have been one of the causes.
I practiced what you showed and after a while I got it, practice, practice, practice and you will get it, don't give up.
Wonderful. How long did you practice to get this sound?
Excellent, I can recommend your video to teach how to produce those sounds
After about 10 months, I came back to this video and I did it!!!! LIKE YESS. Omg from this experience you really need to practice like deliberately. Everyday before going to bed. It would take me lesser time if I didn’t give up after two weeks of practice. I just want to say that it works
I'm tired of everyone in this household making fun of me for sounding like a blanquita when i speak. My mother in law has a lot of nerve for someone who calls corn flakes com flex😒🙄
My mom is white but my dad is Mexican and my siblings have no idea how to speak Spanish I’m the only one at least trying 😭 and I can’t roll my R’s
practice saying Tres (3) "TA DA RES" really fast.
That's a good tip! ¡Saludos desde México! -Jim
I’m already rolling my rs cause this tip lol your a goat
That's a tap, not a roll though.
I can only do it when i say this, I guess I gotta keep practicing for the skill to transfer to other words 😩
This actually helps me. If I imagine a "d" sound like this between the letters, it helps get the vibration needed to roll the R. Thanks!
Thank you so much for making this video. I’ve struggled to roll my Rs for the longest time but this advice has helped me so much. :)
We're glad it helped! If you want more practice, we have more exercises on our site: spanishandgo.com/learn/how-to-roll-your-rs -Jim
growing up speaking english, I always knew how to say my soft r without knowing and just ab to get the trilled r jus need more practice
Say bottle in an American accent and it works perfectly ❤️
@DewGetRekt This person just means don't say the 'tt' like the 't' in 'tick', which is how you would say it outside of America.
Note 'an' is the indefinite article. ie, suggesting that any American accent will do.
TYSM the Peddro thing helped me I learned to roll my r’s in 2 minutes saying peddro over and over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How do you flick your tongue so fast :(
Juicello it's vibration. you can't do it by moving your tongue purposely
Cuz we are built like that 🇲🇽
@Nicolasa lmaooo I remember as a kid I couldn’t do it then Naturally some how I was able to do it without realizing
I am able to sound the soft r but I tried the second technique in order to achieve the trill one. IT WORKED IN A SECOND!
That's awesome! Congrats! Thanks for watching. Keep up the good work. -Jim
@@SpanishandGo Thanks!!! :)
You explained this better than three years of high school Spanish ever did. It makes so much sense. Didn’t realize the soft R was formed differently. English R comes from the throat. Plus I’m from Boston so my English R isn’t great to begin with!
Glad you found it helpful!
Ok I've been trying to figure this out for ages but that "sigh" technique really works! More to prrrractice...
Awesome! Glad to hear that worked for you. Thanks for watching! -Jim
I really fancy this video , excellent teachings !!! So encouraging !!!!!!!! I got through in 5 mins !!!! Practice produce perfectness
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Much more to come soon. -Jim
@@SpanishandGo im looking forward !!! Blessings in jesus mighty name !!!!!
most helpful video i've seen on this so far... will update if there is success...good luck soldiers
I’m literally sitting here crying over this because I can’t do it-)
OMG ME
I know it's very disappointing.
Sometimes I think you have to try thinking of something else while doing it. When I try too hard I can't do it. (A bit like when you try and remember where something is and it's only when you give up and go out of the room, it suddenly comes to you)
Arianna, I posted some exercises in the comments. Try them-especially the moth-wing.
Same, and I have a Spanish class in a few days for school. Oh boy.
One of the best explanations that I have seen. Explaining what you may be doing wrong is very helpful. I was applying too much pressure.
I'm great at spanish pronunciation but this is the only thing I can't do 😂😭
I adore and appreciate them so much! I wish they would have repeated the tongue twisters a million times for the super slow people like myself. 😅
I've been trying the "Per - ro" trick since watching this video and I still can't do it! I'm hopeless! haha
try to pronounce the "r" stay and that lasts near 3 or 4 seconds (sorry for my poor english hehe )
Try to practice it, relaxed, while lying on your back.
That technique didn't work for me either. Playing around with tongue placement and air pressure is what worked for me
OH MY GOD THE LAST ONE LITERALLY. THANK YOU SO MUCH
IM CRIYNG
I’m glad! Thanks for watching! -Jim
OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! I did it!!!!!!! I did a trilled "r"!!! Thanks Spanish and Go! This video helped me a lot.
Now, I will have to keep practicing in order to not forget how to make that sound. 😀 I'm. So. Happy.
Awesome! Congrats! I’m glad the video helped. Keep practicing. 😊 -Jim
-Jim
THE TONGUE TWISTER WORKED I’ve never been able to roll my rs and I tried a few times then quit, then I tried a couple hours later and BOOM I DID IT! Thanks!
Still practicing with the tongue twister of course😉
I made a video about how I learned to roll my R's in 4 steps. Great video btw!
Thanks to this video, I finally learned to roll my Rs. Thank you so much :)
omgosh I love them. They're adorable!
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! I've been learning spanish since i was like 10 and only NOW learned!! the way you said to sigh is what helped me cuz i can make a "machine gun" sound but i way using way too much air so it sounded like a weird breathy r, but just sighing and saying "arroz" made it work!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I’m so freakin close
Keep practicing! You’ll get it. Thanks for watching. Un saludo. -Jim
IKR me too
I'm lucky to be a native syrian arabic speaker
This helped me with spanish
The vowels are the same
The r is the same
"This is exclusive for european spanish which I speak" c and z exist in arabic
The j is the same
And there are alot of simmilar words
"Aceite/ الزيت
Arroz/الرز
Azúcar/السكر
Hasta/حتى
Camisa/قميص
Jarra/جرة
Etc"
I can trill my r but I have to use a lot of power from my throat to do it. Kinda like a French r.
Seth Risner then you aren’t doing it right.... that’s how I thought it was too. Don’t worry you will get it
Thats exactly how it is working for me but we have to try to not press the back of our throat
watches 10 mins vid
still can't do it
cries in asiático
Yay! I’m rolling!!!! Could roll at all on Wednesday...watched this and have been saying over and over r con r cigarro...plus perro, carro, marrón, la guitarra etc. To the point my hubbie and cats think I’ve lost it! But it’s paid off. I’m still practicing but heading in the right direction. The word splitting method defo helped me. 👏👏👏
Congrats! That's awesome! Don't forget we have more exercises on our website if you still need help. spanishandgo.com/learn/how-to-roll-your-rs There are a bunch of Spanish tongue twisters that can help you master the R sound too. Thanks for watching and sharing your results! -Jim
Whenever I try the double r, it always comes out as "d" even though I can do the single tap "r". It sounds like I'm saying "pededo" rather than "perro". Any tips?
This is my problem as well! I'm not quite getting that trill sound. Did you ever figure out what we're doing wrong?
Lmao same,
I can do an un-voiced trill noise, but can't do it for actual words
Thank you my comrade you have improved my r-r-r-r-Russian accent
Who can’t even do the soft r sound? 🙋🏼♀️
@@alphabeticalborder6951 Nope.
I can
SomethingLike Suzi it’s like d. Just replace it with d.
I can't
Same
omg!!!! the per-ro really works! thank you guys so much
Trabalenguas clásico: "...Erre con erre, guitarra. Erre con erre, barril. Mira Ramón como rueda, la rueda del ferrocarril..."
¡Ese no nos lo sabíamos! Muchas gracias. :) Un saludo desde Puerto Rico. -May
we say:'' erre con erre sigarro.
"rieles" = rails
Thank you!
I'm from Northern Territory Australia in my native language which we speak is ngen'gi tyemirri, majority of words are mostly made up of double "rr's" I found Spanish and Italian easy to learn
0:17 Captions: "speaking in foreign language"
Omg y’all this work.. i kept repeating Perro and I fixed my lips in the O shape to get the “rrrrr” rolling out !! It’s not perfect but I’m excited lol currently learning Italian!
Damn this is really helping. I feel like I understand the concept and am getting better immediately. Great explanation and delivery.
Glad to hear it! Keep practicing and you’ll have it mastered in no time. Thanks for watching! -Jim

I'm a native english speaker, but still got it right on my first try.
My tongue is far too short to do this! It's so short that when I stick it out as far as I can, I can only get it about a cm, if that.
NAH COS I GOT IT WITH THE FIRST TECHNIQUE FOR A SECOND NOW I JUST GOTTA PRACTICE IT THANK U!!!!!
Instructions unclear, I froze my hand in a bowl...
