    rob, i hope you see this. here is some tips for you.
    that light when you pull the trigger is the pilot arc, allows for smoother starts, allows you to keep the trigger down as you move between places, and removes the need to touch the surface to start your cut.
    if you want to cut stainless or anything high nickel chrome, you will need h5 gas to get a clean cut. or 95 percent nitrogen, 5 percent hydrogen. this also works for aluminum.
    I would look into hypertherm because those machines can do gouging and have extended reach electrodes for reaching into tight spots.

    As someone who welds for a living its always interesting to see someone learn multiple processes for the first time. Mig welding can be easy but still takes time to master. Its much more convenient that tig but, tig is far stronger. Knowing which processes to use and how to apply them to your situation as well as the time it takes to execute them is my main focus as a welder. Keep on working on it, all love baby.
    Also, the brand "Yes Welder" is actually not terrible for a home or garage welder. I actually have used them and for the price you pay it exceeded my expectations. Yes there are plenty of higher quality options that if you have the money for you should defiantly buy over the yes welder. This is for all the average Joe's like myself.

    another great way to leave a "bead" with a mig gun is to do small little circles as you progress with the weld, this helps the puddle slowly move and gives you more control than just going with the forward-backward pattern

  • @marcopoloonpollo5937
    @marcopoloonpollo5937 2 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    I understand that Miller makes good shit, but there's slim to no chance that most "beginner" welders who don't plan on doing it as a profession are going to drop $4000 on their first welder. I feel like this is for the professional who needs a more versatile tool to get various jobs done.

      Feels like somewhere in the middle to me. I see it being useful for advanced hobbyists and auto shop or machinist who does that has to weld occasionally and need to use different processes (MIG/TIG). Most "Professional Welders" will have a couple different machines to do each task seperately. I do think Rob's shop provides a perfect use case for this kind of machine.

    When drawing high currents from extension cords if they are rolled up the cable on the inside will be roasted by the 50 feet of cable on top of it. Always extend your extension cord whith high power draw. Otherwise you will need to wait for it to cool down again, though I don't know what the duty cycle of that would be.

    • @Hakudog5
      @Hakudog5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Its not so much that the cable being on top of itself creates the heat... coiled cable can create an induction system that basically works the same as an induction stove top. You can negate this by coiling your cable in a figure 8 pattern. No need to spread it across the floor.

    I am a production MIG Welder. Here are some things to know:
    Hold the trigger down and set the gas pressure to 30. Every time you change gas you will need to re-adjust this.
    Listen to the welder when welding. You can hear when you are getting closer or farther away by the pitch getting higher or lower. You want to have an even pitch throughout the whole weld.
    With thicker metal the settings mostly become personal preference. I encourage you to play around with the settings and see how the welds change. Thinner metal you have to worry about burning through your piece.
    The "fake bead" technique you refer to is called a whip. It is one of many patterns you can do: whip, cursive e/circle, C/half moon, etc. The tighter you make the pattern the better. Important to note that these patterns don't penetrate as deep into the metal and won't be as strong. Some places don't allow patterns for that reason.
    Change your gas at 500PSI. This is for the gas companies. When they refill the bottle they still want pressure in it so it doesn't get air contamination.

      the best Renesis pro engine builder was Daryl Drummond and his engines generate ~270 bhp or 230-235 whp with unmodified factory side exhaust ports. That’s the bar to shoot for and the reality soon to be demonstrated here is that the peripheral exhaust port addition to a Renesis engine is one of the longest running hoax fails going, especially for a normally aspirated Renesis. Don’t take my word for it though, the results will say it all along with all the excuses that follow. The only silver lining is that they’ll post up real results rather than either just making BS butt-dyno claims or slinking away quietly and disappearing like pretty much most of the people who tried it and failed over the last 10+ years.

Very thin sheet metal in the van, the sheets I was putting in was thicker, so I was burning through a lot. I was probably using too thin welding wire as I had to keep a very high feed rate. And the areas couldn't be properly cleaned, so water was constantly used to put out small flames, which in turn bubbled inbetween the weld and metal.

I was taught that when doing a MIG bead you do circles the size of the bead desired when moving along the piece, and to make sure you push the bead not pull, so that the surface is protected by your gas

    Just don’t hold the mig torch like a plasma cutter, your supposed to “push” the puddle along at an angle with your torch down at a 45 angle

    If you turndown the feedspeed down you take it slow and you have less sparks. And I highly recommend to hold the torch with one hand and your thumb on the flex/ pipe to get more controll and keep your head closer at your work. Then you have more controll less sparks and you see what you are doing. Treat it like tig. What I mean with that is that you have to position your self almost the same. You can do nice work with it. Enjoy your new tools 🤘

    Well it’s not the illusion of a bead it’s still a bead just made in a different way. There’s a great many different patterns that you can try and you just find which is the most effective and comfortable for you. Comfort is supervising important in welding as it can greatly improve consistency. I Love your enthusiasm about learning all this Rob keep up the making of amazing things and impressive work🤙🏻

    Rob what id sugest while doing mig is your left hand to be really close to the torch to help stabilize the tip, lose the right hand glove for better control and move left to right while keeping around a 45 degree angle of the torch to the surface not 90 you can see better that way. to me the overlaping that creates a "bead" helps me know im staying on track of what i am welding plus controls heat

    I think you have to weld from left to right with the mig, so you can see what you're doing. Welded mig a long time ago and that's what they told us to do

    I actually really like stick welding, it was the first type of welding I learned, with an ancient old inverter and shit materials on a barn floor. It's fairly easy and forgiving, and it gets the job done quickly and cheaply. Of course cleanup is a bit of a pain. I also learned to MIG/MAG weld at school that year, as well as how to gas weld with oxy-acetylene. All that at like 13. Never learned to weld TIG though, might need to learn that now that I'm 18.

    Few tips:
    Watch out for gas flow rate
    Put the torch cable on your shoulder so you don't have to stress your hands to relive the weight of it. Your hands are concentrated to do something that needs precision

    Pro tip: when setting gas flow on the tank for mig release the tensioner on the wire and pull the trigger to set flow rate so you don’t waste or have to rewind the wire.

  • @sublimingmule6356

    That copper on the end is also where the current gets from the machine into the wire, which is why it's such a tight fit over the wire

    I found the plasma cutter and digital welders from CEA brilliant they get u to put the metal type and thickness in and for welder the wire ur using and set the rest them self, and for plasma cutter u just have different nozzel size fot different thickness, same swirl ring and and electrode, was so easy to set up, but these were 3phase

    Tig is great for stainless and aluminum, but mig is the best for mild steel and getting proper penitration like roll cages but stick can be used on a cage it's actually used more on structural steel and on site welding. 🚧
    Tig will also look better without grinding but for speed you go mig on steel.
    Also a suggestion, play around with zig zags and loop patterns and mig welds will look like you were rolling the cup on a tig

  • @sublimingmule6356
    @sublimingmule6356 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You had a very nice distance, and feed rate with that first weld, lucky guesses bro! Normally it takes striking a few arcs to get it dialed in, especially if you haven't welded before, or for a while

  • @adampinczesgarageandfabric9930
    @adampinczesgarageandfabric9930 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    big things to watch out for with MIG, protect your glass, car windows get destroyed when you run a MIG too close. the sparks that fly off are tiny bits of metal that melt and damage glass on impact. protect machined surfaces like your mill, welding that close to your mill could damage the surface because of those tiny pieces of metal. not always going to cause a problem with that probably mostly with higher amperage stuff but I wouldn't risk it. and fire hazards cardboard, paper, fuels, can all catch fire. and last one is get used to welding while your being burned, don't lose focus. you start welding thicker stuff and eventually you will catch yourself on fire or a bit of hot metal will land in your shoe or glove or other places you won't enjoy and never MIG weld in the sitting position, you will regret it. now all of that said MIG can be very useful and fun.

    Biggest thing with mig (or welding in general) is be comfortable. Rest your hand, arm or lean against something. You’d be amazed how much that helps.

  • @PsycoNinja619

    You get 2 types of plasma cutters, external grounded arc and contained arc. A contained arc has the positive and negative terminal running up to the torch, thus giving a contained arc, or a small lightsaber.

    I know I'm late to the party but here are some pro tips for mig, you want to hold your torch at about a 10° to 15° ish angle, you can push or pull depending on what you're doing, I always say you should push when welding aluminum just because you get far better gas coverage and cleaner welds, and you're settings when set properly it should sound almost like sizzling bacon

  • @jd-jarenwilliams1708
    @jd-jarenwilliams1708 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The forward and pause technique that creates that bead look is not for visuals alone it creates a better quality weld this is for forehand welding at higher movement speeds typically on thinner metal. there is also backhand welding which is typical for thicker metal or larger gaps in which you create a C shape simar to TIG welding both of these create a somewhat bead look but aren't used for that but rather creating better welds. Also if you don't have Welpers i'd recommend grabbing cheap ones as the cutter is the right depth to cut the tip of the MIG wire to the desired length at starts of welds makes significantly easier starts and reduces cold starts or leaving a piece of the wire behind

  • @jbarnhill50
    @jbarnhill50 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can do beads will mig by just running the head at a angle and depends on if you push or pull

  • @sublimingmule6356
    @sublimingmule6356 2 ปีที่แล้ว
