Out of the older versions, to me, this is the best as far as atmosphere goes. Of course, it's not the same as Dimash, but in its own right, an unbelievably beautiful song, voice and performance. When listening to this, I try my very best not to compare with D, and just to enjoy.
    Thank you for the reaction.

When we watch a really fabulous singer do these redition, that's when the stratospheric difference in Dimash's performances shines through. There's no one in this world who can compare him. Cause it's not just a matter of vocal range, is also about the feeling conveyed by the artist and Dimash's artistry is immeasurable too.

No, the only thing Dimash has over them is vocal technique. In terms of emotions, he gets blown out of the water by any of these great french singers (Balavoine, Groulx, Pelletier, Lemarchal)

Actually Dimash covered the version sang by Gregory Lemarchal, a guy from Star Academy (singing competition) who died very young. In one of his concerts, dimash had his photo in the background as an homage among other artists who influenced his career

Dimash came to this song through the story and the singing of Gregory. Then he made an interpretation of the music and the text and made his own song. New arrangement. Let's not forget that Dimash is not just a singer, he is an instrumentalist and a composer. He doesn't make covers, he interprets. If you've seen The Singer 2017 Round One behind the scene, you know what I am talking about. This is why you hear the pain in Dimash's version, while I don't hear it here.

Norman sings this song and makes me cry. Every time I hear a man cry. Heartache! The unbearable melancholy of a romantic who has lost his life. This is a fall from stellar heights into the very depths of the Arctic cold. To emotional hell. This is the cry and cry of the soul! Dimash can’t do this so far...

No one has performed this magnificent aria better than Norman Groulx to this day ❤ Unfortunately, all subsequent attempts appear to be purely for the sake of competition. They lack soul, meaning, understanding of the work, and personal presence. It is a pity that the exquisite and incomparably powerful performance of Norman Groulx is being compared to showy acrobatics.

Dimash hasn't manage to learn the lyrics fully and that means that he doesn't understand what he's singing. He's just presenting his singing skills. And don't forget that this isn't a song it is a part of a rock opera and it is extremely important to understand that character and what is happening.

I don’t think many people even realize that this is a theatrical performance. That SOS was performed almost at the end of the 2 hour show! The show that involved many difficult pieces before it, with intensive choreography. And the most important - Norman Groulx was not singing it for hype- he was singing as Michel Berger, the composer and the stage director of this production wanted!

Dimash, of course, is like a perfect instrument and his performance is ideal, but sometimes the soul needs something completely different... In my playlist, this version of the song performed by Norman Groulx (I listened to all the versions known to me, starting with the original performance by Daniel Balavoine, then Noraman Groulx, Bruno Pelletier, Gregory Lemarchal, Anotine Wend and Dimash). All performers are certainly very, very talented people, professionals and excellent vocalists. But Norman absolutely captivated me, because the main character, Johnny Rockfort, performs this aria in the tragic finale, near his deceased beloved, and emotions and experiences are important here, and Norman fully conveys them in his performance (watch the entire rock opera “Starmania”).

I agree that it was a beautiful version. The main point for me was that a native speaker was singing, so you could tell the difference in the clarity of pronunciation. HOWEVER, I was cringing at some of his higher notes. The beauty and quality of Dimash's notes in ALL registers is simply unbeatable! That's why I return to listen to Dimash's version time and time again.

    • @LilyApak

It's a shame Berger did not get to know Dimash, right? 🥴He would kick out all his lead singers from Starmania. He would surely invite Dimash to play Johnny Rockfort. In fact I would love to hear Dimash's take on "Quand On Arrive En Ville", "Banlieue nord" or "Quand on n'a plus rien à perdre". But he won't do them. That's why I return to listen to Starmania, with Norman Groulx, and with Daniel Balavoine, or even Robert Leroux who did not do any high notes on SOS but still made it sound poignant.

What you see here is a part of an awesome theatrical performance, at the end of the 2 hour show (Called Starmania, by the way and first performed in 1979 on stage), with many difficult arias and intensive choreography. It is performed as it was approved by the composer and the stage director of this production Michel Berger. Norman Groulx did not make a “cover” of this aria, his voice is on 4 official albums of the rock-opera “Starmania” (1986, 88, 89, 98).
Dimash is NOT the original performer either. It is Daniel Balavoine whom you can listen to in albums of 78 and 79.
If you love Dimash, why do you need to bring up somebody from the legacy cast to compare? Isn’t Dimash self - sufficient? Can’t you love him without finding “faults”with somebody else’s performance? I can’t really understand the purpose of this comparison.

I agree that this was beautiful. I especially love the word and tone choices while sliding up the octaves. More individual note steps in the transitions whereas Dimash takes much bigger steps in his slide.
And yeah, the french is better when native. I also love some of the additions of grit on some words. I did cringe in a few places because I am so acustomed to Dimash's purity and clarity at all octave ranges..

I think you didn't get goosebumps exactly because this version is haunting. At least it was so with me. The song is not supposed to be haunting; it's about the pain of losing a loved one, about the cruelty of our world, and a plea to heaven to be carried away and up, where his love goes now and where it is a brighter, freer and better place. This is why Dimash's interpretation is unbeatable, his high notes are just right and even his imperfect French brings added meaning to the suffering that words are weak and distorted to express. Have you tried talking through tears? Are your words intelligible? Dimash's drama is so palpable and I'm sorry, but this is now Dimash's song 💖💖💖🎶🎶🎶🤗🤗🤗

    • @kreiontresadenn5633

@@irenevassileva5586 The song HAS to be haunting. It's one of the last song of the rock opera "Starmania". The character, Johnny Rockfort, sings this song kneeling next to the dead body of his lover who was brutally murdered. The song must convey sorrow, extreme pain and has to reflect the existential crisis Johnny Rockfort is experiencing. Let's get it right : it's tragic to the core, hopeless and downright nihilistic. Knowing that, Dimash's version feels completelly out of place and is totally missing the point (but at the same time, it's very beautiful and absolutely amazing vocal-wise). Norman Groulx did a phenomenal job here (while not having a fourth of the talent and skills Dimash have).

@@kreiontresadenn5633 When one is alone with a brutally murdered loved one, parting forever, one is overcome with both the pain of loss and the rage of one's helplessness. Very nice, but in the very high notes Dimash's voice remains strong, and not with the other singers. But for me this song is also beautiful.

not comparing Dimash at all, I am sorry he has gone flat many times and not good in falsetto . This song is purported to be one of most difficult songs to sing. His voice is very good , this song is too hard for this singer.

Really? Why was he chosen for Johnny Rockfort? Don't forget that this isn't a song it is a fragment of a musical!

They don’t know that. According to these comments Berger was deaf and could not hear his lead singer’s “false motes”. The actor who was an outstanding Johnny Rockfort in 86, invited to the next production in 88 in Paris, whom Berger took to London to present the English version of Starmania for future producers, who still knocked off this aria with fever 41 and towels around the neck. They still feel the need to compare. Norman Groulx does not need comparisons. He is phenomenal Johnny Rockfort. ❤️

As a musician I hear many false high notes 1/4 tone lover than supposed to be. Also sliding from register to register is not smooth and i can hear this roughness. every time when he does the runs up I am afraid he won't make it. It why I love Dimash . He is perfect for musicians.

A beautiful singer, but just like Daniel (original singer), his falsetto is very weak and feable sounding.
Good, but definitely not Dimash! 💞🦌

It’s okay, but his high notes are kinda strange not smooth like Dimash’s and very French sounding 🤷🏻‍♀️🇺🇸❤️🇰🇿

This is written in French and Dimash's French is not understandable.
