They are launched in the higher atmosphere to evade radars, then eventually made to re-enter the lower atmosphere using gravity to attain such high speeds which cannot be intercepted by regular anti misslie systems.

Aswathama in m,ahabharatha war when his father drona was brutually killed by dhristha dhyumna -brother in law of arjun-He destroyed one akshouni army of pandavas with it and later the astra was broguth to a nought as per krishna's instructions-every one dropped their weapons and prostrated.
