I've loved movies since I was a kid and started my collection real young, but I made some big mistakes collecting my blu-rays. Please, don't repeat my mistakes.
I discarded my films library in 2013 I let go of some excellent flicker shows in that purge I owned a variety of VHS that I didn't realize would be somewhat difficult to replace At the time I thought I was done with movies Maybe I thought it was something I should grow out of I was wrong It turns out that owning and enjoying flicks is a wonderful life-long interest/pursuit After awhile I came to remember the immense pleasure in introducing masterpiece films (that had somehow gone unseen) to the close people in my life Truly a delightful thing to share with one another Thus I have begun to rebuild Now my concern is that hopefully the new herd won't get out of hand! Thank you Good show Great job!
I've never got the digital hype.... what's more convenient than getting it from the shelve and putting the disc in the player?!!? No buffering no logging in no nothing. And don't even get me started on the quality difference and all. Physical media is king and that's a fact.
Don’t forget the scratches, smudges, poorly produced discs. Then there’s the players that breakdown or have missing features. FWIW, I have a physical collection.
@@robertt9342 I always check my discs so it's pretty rare that I have an issue with the desk. And my players pretty much work all the time. Plus if you're a gamer like me then each system is a Blu-ray player and now a 4K player these days. Actually one of the best 4K players for cheap is an Xbox One X with the remote. If you just want standard HDR.
*"Digital" is a plague that goes across so many facets,* not just media, you don't really own a car that can have featres disabld with an update, the same way movies disappear from your digital collection. Rentin software instead of buyin it, some speakers that stop workin when they disconnect it from the server for bein old - not even bluetooth. Say no to "digital" 👌🏽 You can browse someone's collection the same way we browsed at blockbuster, you are more likely to discover hidden gems or just spark a conversation about a movie and how it made you feel, what it made you think.
@@BabysitterSky We are talkin about IMPLEMENTATION of Digital, not the media itself. I love havin my own digital media files. But companies give you a lease on your digital purchases, they can disappear for a number of different reasons, they often do and your features on devices get downgraded After you buy them. Implementation is everythin
This video does make me sad. I think all collectors go through something similar. I buy a lot of DVDs (recently) because they are cheaper and the cover art is larger (it’s an important factor for me). I’ve subbed and I look forward to seeing your other content. Those binders are so awful - I’ve done that.
Honestly as a kid we use to have a collection but sold them to movie stop at the time. Being in middle school to highschool that's when digital was becoming more and more a thing, but thank god i started learning more about it and how you own nothing before I started collecting movies again. 2020 is when i started back collecting and haven't stopped since.
I went all digital around 2013/2014 as well, Ultraviolet and the 5 friend slots thing got me. I only just came to my senses at the beginning of the year and have invested a bunch on physical media and a huge 8 bay NAS to back them all up onto. I plan to get that up to 108TB of storage so I could fit about 1700 4k uncompressed blurays on it. I don't even own a regular bluray player.
I collect physical media as well. It's such a good feeling to own my movies. Unfortunately we had loads before 2011. We had a huge town fire and lost our home. But Ive been collecting since. I have a pretty good collection now. I need to catalog them to see how many I have. I mainly collect dvds because I feel we're in a time of collecting dvds like VHS.
@@MoviesAreRad thank you! Yes it was a rough time but we made it through. We had a FEMA trailer on the property and rebuilt. Then I got pregnant shortly after the fire so I spent the pragnancy in the FEMA trailer and then the builders took us for said amount of money... It was crazy! But what??? 13 years later we're OK. Lookup Bastrop, Texas fires of 2011. The fire raged got over a month. One of the biggest fires in history.
I went with storage cases during my DVD days... so almost all my all of my 400 DVD's are in 4 Cases and I've been adding Blurays in as well - I do need the space. Now my rule is if the Bluray/DVD disc doesn't come in with a slip, box set, digibook etc. I rip it to my Plex system, then put them in the case (with the cover art). I'll probably start doing that w/ 4Ks that have no slips, etc... I need the space, no more room for shelves. When I got my 4K TV I started down the streaming/Digital path, fortunately not too far before I discovered the issues with compression - especially on the audio side.
I did the same thing, bought into the digital hype and was literally curating something I did not physically own and rebuying movies I already had 🤦♂️ glad to be back to the tangible.
My almost mistake was not looking at 4k blu ray reviews of sdr blu rays I had. Terminator 2 4k I bought for 5 dollars, then immediately started to rummage through the bag of blu rays I was going to give away. lol, I had the good version of T2 with him on the bike. I watched it the next day there was so much detail and original color was good more than good. It was great to watch Og T2 on my lgc1 77.
I hate those binders, as you pay for the DVD packaging and you just toss it out. Makes searching for them harder, damages them and it's just tacky. A shelf with cases makes a place into a home. Another mistake is buying DVDs instead of blurays or 4K blurays when available. I will say, unless you know you love it, just rent or stream it first. I only buy what I love.
I did get one of those DVD carrier albums, but it was after much consideration, I will NOT get rid of the case, but it's more convenient for traveling, just to put a few of the movies I know I'll want to see in it, carry it with me on the trip, and return them to their proper cases when I get home. I don't want to break the cases by cramming them in my stuff, so the DVD carrier helps compress it, and since it's a small one (only like 25), it's not that floppy either.
Digital media doesn't travel and even if it did, you don't own any of it anyway. How do people still not know this stuff in 2024 ??? How did people fall for this in the first place, especially the total lack of ownership ???
I mean I’ve known it for years, but until recently felt like I just needed to continue the course of digital. I felt like I was in too deep to change, oh well change is worth it!
We still got our VHS' from my childhood. I even found a tape for Jumanji on top of a trashcan back when I was going to school, and I just had to grab it. Don't know if it works because my mom owns the VHS player, but I'm hoping to check it out when I get the chance.
I think Christopher Nolan said he would never get rid of his physical media for the same reasons mentioned here. Films on digital can be taken down or heavily censored . I prefere to have THE FRENCH CONNECTION uncut than cut by some over sensitive idiots that dont understand the movie. Also I just subscribed to the channel hope that makes ya feel better.🍻🍻
This is an easy mistake to make dude. I think because of the technology there was a period where I felt like the streaming format looked better than my dvds/blurays. I was wrong. Really enjoy the channel! My channel is new to the YT space, Cheers!
I loved having physical media but the last time I moved I just got tired of boxing up movies only to keep them in boxes. The plus on digital is if I travel and want to show say the classic star wars movies wich I still have on digital btw I don't have to haul duscs around.
Digital is only for supplement to physical media. I learnt the hard way too. There are some great titles which streaming platform will nv put up because of licensing issue.
I've lost all desire for owning anything digital. movies, tv shows, games, books, poster. because it feels like clutter.. A big hard drive is just so much easier. so if there's a movie i really love, i support it by buying merch. 😅
Going digital is not a option, and never was, fir you rent digital, you own physical, I'll never go full digital, I barely stream, and only stuff that ptobly come out physical eventually, so no apple tv crap or Netflix crap, since their pro no physical release of their originals
Here’s my suggestion to collectors: rent a space from a climate-controlled storage company, deck it out with shelving, and organize movies by genre, like an old video rental store. Add movie posters and your own graphic design for effect. If you’ve got kids, laminate some checkout cards for them. Give them the Blockbuster Video experience! Easy for me to say, I’m not a collector. 😂
Physical media only for me. I grew up in the 1970's (pre "woke" and "politically correct" ) back before there was even video tape or any type of home video format. I now have an extrensive collection of DVD, Blu Ray and UHD and I love it. I love the disc extras : commentaries, trailers, alternate cuts, etc, and I love having the artwork, inserts and booklets and all. I decide what and when I want to watch, not dependent on downloads or other outside providers. And my collection consists primarily of grade-B films and other world oddball movies, small label releases that the download companies would never access or consider making available. Physical media forever. Just make sure to have extra, working disc players so it can all be used and enjoyed in the decades ahead even after we ourselves are gone.
This message is 100% approved, as a fellow movie collector! So many regrets. Looking forward to the next video about your recent haul!

Another thing which would suck about getting rid of some Blu ray disc's would be they have now gone out of print and are very expensive to replace
