Enjoyable show as always. I recognised the piece of music playing on the Ninja game. It was the theme to a very short lived 80's tv series called The Master (released on video as The Ninja Master) starring Lee Van Cleef as an American trained as a ninja and Sho Kosugi as a former pupil bent on killing him. It was naff to be honest but was made in the wake of The A Team and going for a similar feel.
I saw the Ninja game featured on Ashens series, Terrible old Games You've Never Heard of. Amazing really. Still have a Lenslok device for my old copy of DI Tomahawk. Years before Captcha :)
Fantastic show as ever Paul. The show is getting more and more features each time, tge tips section from your guest is good also. This is still my fave show on youtube.
If the lightguns work like the other consoles, you must tinker with the screen brightness/contrast, and try to place the gun the most centered possible to the middle of the screen. Shooting down/up or from the sides of the TV makes it harder for the shots to register. I have several lightguns for PS1, PS2, PS3 and Saturn, and they all work best if you place them dead center in front of the TV. A bigger TV will also make it more enjoyable because it's easier to hit small things on a bigger screen.
11:10 I remember having a Defender back in the day, and I really don't recall it being this bad. I don't know if the camcorder is causing some kind of interference or if something in the gun has just gone bad over two decades, but something doesn't seem right.
I was just wondering this - does the camcorder have active autofocus for instance, which fires infra-red to figure out how far away things are and focus the camcorder which then interferes with the light the gun receives; or even, is the camera lens reflecting back the flashes from the screen and back into tje gun that then ends up indicating a different location? You're pointing the camera right at the screen so reflections would come right back to the screen then back... Try moving the camera or turning it off and playing after its gone horrible accuracy, then angling it elsewhere and playing...
Great as always Paul! I would like an extensive program with all arkanoid clones for spectrum :) And I miss the music used in the firsts seasons, the one that opens episode 1, nice tune that gets into sintony! Good Luck!
I normally have no trouble watching the show, and watch it via the WiiU on TV. For this episode both the WiiU and Nexus 7 refuse to get beyond the spinning buffering icon. The only way I've been able to get my fix is to sit at my desk and watch it on the Mac. I'm certain the issue is with Virgin Media, as loads of people are complaining about their TH-cam streaming at the moment. Keep up the great work, Paul.
Hi Paul - Back in the day, increasing the brightness of the CRT screen helped accuracy with my Cheetah gun on my C64...wonder if it's the same for the Spectrum?
You are right. When the trigger is pressed all the screen EXCEPT the target is black, the target becomes a white square. If the gun sees white then that's a hit, if it sees black or dim white it will not register it.
Great episode thanks. Bronx Street Cop was my favourite light gun game on the speccy, the 128K version was much better from what i remember. I got a copy thrown in the 007 action pack I think, along with Robot Attack. Keep in mind that everyone played light gun games by holding the light gun right up to the glass of course ;)
Defenda or Defender is an arcade classic that a lot of people on TH-cam enjoy. It always felt way too balls hard for me though although I do get why it's so good.
Paul, the word Gemba is actually pronounced [ghembah] and it means a mushroom in one of the eastern Czech dialects. But anyway, thanks for reviewing our demo! It was a lot of work.
The clue about the lightgun issue is that you supposedly did ok when not filming. My hypothesis is that the camera is sending out an infrared beam to assist with focusing and this is distracting the lightgun.
Great episode. Interesting to see someone actually give that Ninja game a real shot - seen some other folk try to do it, and pretty much dismiss it. Not that I'd say it makes it a decent game. Can't wait for next months :)
Paul - really great show well done. Just caught up with this whilst surfing around youtube after a few glasses of Red :-) Brought back a lot of great memories and love your video presentation. How about covering some game utilities in a future show such as Quill, GAC, PAW and some of Jonathon Caudwells superb utilities. I'm going to have another crack at Dun Darach now...
Paul Jenkinson Thanks Paul I am just catching up with the earlier episodes now. If you haven't done already is there any chance of you doing a review of Big RPG games which made it to the spectrum such as Bards Tale (86% in Crash). Many thanks again.
Nice episode. Paul, do you remember a side scrolling shooter with a level titled "Walls of Hades" by any chance. I think it boasted on the cover about it being 100% machine code. I used to play it a lot as a kid but cannot remember the name of the game.
Ninja Master got a sequel as well... Oriental Hero. But surely the best Bomberman game on the spectrum is the official one? Eric and the Floaters! :D But if you ever have trouble capturing footage for light gun stuff Etc Paul, try running it through a VCR or DVD recorder. It's how I've captured footage in the past.
It's a shame the attemppt at a 16-Bit Sinclair ended up being changed into bringing out another 8-Bit called Sam Coupie. I'm sure if they have brought it out the arcade port games would have been almost arcade perfect compared to the ST and AMIGA because of the speed Sinclair get in their games dispite hardware limitations.
It would be nice if you look into how to pronounce certain words before recording, especially names of companies etc. Psygnosis for example is not sig-know-sys. The psy is like psych. Gemba is not -Jem-ba. I enjoy the show overall but these mispronounced words almost every episode do trigger me somewhat.
Catching up. A speccy show done right. All about the games, all about the fun.
What a lovely Saturday morning treat, thanks Paul, great as ever.

ANOTHER type-in I remember. Thanks :)

Thanks. Maybe too many features? Is it getting too diluted? Only time will tell.
Wonderful show as always! That Ninja game was something else!
Only just found this channel, great stuff, 32 Epsodes to catch on :)

Really sorry, Paul, but the near-defeated “by now, over three hours had passed” made me laugh out loud! Love your channel, catching up gradually.

Thank you very much.
Enjoyable as usual!
Thanks

Already looking forward to the next one!
The next episode will be huge... i'm saying no more ;-)
11:04 that music was from another Code Masters game about being a stunt car in a movie set.. .Cannot remember the name of it tho.
Super Stuntman
Paul, the word Gemba is actually pronounced [ghembah] and it means a mushroom in one of the eastern Czech dialects. But anyway, thanks for reviewing our demo! It was a lot of work.
Sorry about that! Love your work, as you can probably tell.
The clue about the lightgun issue is that you supposedly did ok when not filming.
My hypothesis is that the camera is sending out an infrared beam to assist with focusing and this is distracting the lightgun.
Good idea. You may be onto something. A larger TV and darker room also helped.
Great episode. Interesting to see someone actually give that Ninja game a real shot - seen some other folk try to do it, and pretty much dismiss it. Not that I'd say it makes it a decent game.

Still can't get to the last challenge though!

I did a few episodes on game creation packages a while back.. but there is always room for more utils.

mean jules Ep 28 includes Los Amores De Brunilda. Great RPG.
That gun is classic Cheetah for you. They were dreadful and this keeps to their theme.
Nice episode. Paul, do you remember a side scrolling shooter with a level titled "Walls of Hades" by any chance. I think it boasted on the cover about it being 100% machine code. I used to play it a lot as a kid but cannot remember the name of the game.
jungle warfare intro music is the same as stunt car simulator !!
20:35 That's a blowpipe, a tool of the Ninja (they don't use guns).
sure code masters used that music on jungle warfare in another game. Cant remember which one thou! I have heard it before.
Super Stuntman
Interesting that Codemasters recycled the theme from super stuntman for their light gun games.
Ninja Master got a sequel as well... Oriental Hero.
But surely the best Bomberman game on the spectrum is the official one? Eric and the Floaters! :D

Not a bad idea - to use a DVD recorder.. will look into it thanks.
Paul Jenkinson
No worries, also a great/easy way if you ever have to capture NTSC footage and need to convert it to PAL.
Do you happen to know whether I can use a Kempston Style Light gun on a 128K Spectrum by using a Kempston Interface? So far I was not successful :-(
16:40 How did you not have a seizure completing that game?! I couldn't watch the playback!
It's a shame the attemppt at a 16-Bit Sinclair ended up being changed into bringing out another 8-Bit called Sam Coupie.

Found it! It was super stuntman /watch?v=fZrijPOXssM
