- Welcome to episode 141.
The start of a brand new series.
In this episode I look at the BackBit Pro cartridge.
I chat to Allan Turvey about his new game, celebrating Pacman's birthday.
In the first of a new segment, I look at famous people and their games.
I play Xevious and Hellfire.
I also chat to Geoff.
Details about the BackBit can be found here: store.backbit.io/product/back...
It's a packed episode.

as a recent newcomer to the world of the Speccy who's recently obtained a 48K +, i absolutely love the spectrum show. your work is amazing!
I'm loving the new segment intro sequences. 👍
Great start to the new series.
Steve Davis snooker was a good example of good endorsements.
Agreed.
Love the Currah Micro speech voice for the referee ("Uhladies-and-gen-tul-men-q-wyit-pur-leese!").
Good game, AND mediocre sound!
Just what I like!
Great to see the new series, I always look forward to new episodes.
Yay. You are back. :)
Great stuff as always!
Allan's faithful recreation reminded me of Simon Owen's Pacman emulator which runs the original arcade ROMs on a +3/+2A - EPROM burner required.
Pacman Begins looks great as well!
Love getting up on a Sunday morning in sunny South Australia (although it's getting cold as we approach Winter) and seeing a new Spectrum Show episode has landed!
Great show as always! That Pacman looks ace 🕹️
Ooh Juno First port, that would be ace as there's criminally few micro ports of this around...
Great stuff Paul, thanks for the video.
Thanks for another great show Paul. I always wondered why Daly Thompson was white.
your comment about playing the game and deciding that it wasn't worth the effort is something I experienced so many times. but as it was usually £1.99 or sometimes £2.99 it wasn't a big deal and it would only be a week until I would have the money for another and hopefully the newsagents had received a restock by then. lol
good video link to back-bit be nice lol
o there it is lol opssy
Fantastic!
I think that the DiVide does not run Jetpac unless you type in a poke. So the new SD card reader is an improvement.
we had a 48k rubber keyboard. My brother got a ne w keyboard/case and a joystick interface, later on on when they became cheaper. A joystick that fell to bits was used to make a QAOP + SPACE out of key switches., in one of those shitty vas cases that looked like a book. It was called the Book of Control and and was used for two player games especially Emlyn Highest. Soccer and TRagert Renegade. It was way better than any peripheral you could buy as I made it from proper keyboard switches.
Thank you
Always look forward to a new episode !
Leader Board was a good 8bit golf game.
Don't watch 10:30 if you tasted beer or wine.
Great Episode as always. Much appreciated.
Never played hellfire looks good 👍🏻
That SD interface looks interesting, shame about the no saving though. (yet).
Yes, a pity, although it could be me! I will be checking for new firmware and might ask on the forum.
@@BuckingTheTrend2008 I was lucky enough to buy the last SD Minstrel ZXpand and the ZX81 kit. It cost a lot, but it is well worth it. Saving and loading is so easy. And you can map the joystick to any keys you want.
I know that the name is the spectrum show, but any chance of more ZX80/81 in the future.. 🙂
Can Harlequin from the Amiga be ported to the Zx spectrum Next.
I played that Pacman game a few days ago, and it's good. The SD card adaptor, meh, too expensive. You can pick up a Pi Pico Speccy for that much, and it supports 128k. Nice to view another video though.
Yeh, but it works on real hardware and supports a lot of systems. I mainly wanted it for my ZX81s. I’d been trying to get the ZXpand, but just can’t get them!
You forgot Steve Davis Snooker.
And the two Jocky Wilson games
The description for Pacman Begins is "Inspired by the game 'Paku Paku' by Abagames". It's more than "inspired", it is an exact copy of that original game's idea, with some embellishments. Allan should really credit aba games' Paku Paku inside the Pacman Begins title screen or something, because it led to Paul thinking that Allan came up with the idea. Credit should be given where credit is due.
Allan has said in forums and in our chat about where the inspiration came from. The full audio chat was over 30mins long and I had to edit it down to 5. The chat was about Pac-Man mainly, so bits had to be cut. I should have mentioned it, I was the one reviewing it.
I have always made it very clear where the original idea came from, and I do indeed credit ABA games in the title screen when the game begins. The only credit I give myself here is for the coding and the additional elements. If you look back throughout my work you will find I have always taken great pains to give credit wherever it is due.
@@HappyCodingZX Thank you for the clarification. My comments were based on the footage shown in this video, which did not credit anything on the title screen.
@@JimLeonard no problem
Hi Paul. I have a ZX+ that I’d love to have refurbished. I’m based in Ireland.
Can you recommend anyone?
I only have the unit itself (no cables, power pack etc.).
Any help would be most appreciated!
I mainly use Mutant Caterpillar Games for repairs. Spares can be bought from Byte Delight or ZX Renew.
@@BuckingTheTrend2008 Cheers! You’re a legend!
Great show as ever. Eddie Kidd is such a poor, basic (not literally) game, it's no different if not worse than Atari's 1976 Stunt Cycle, which had its own home version with handlebars so more fun than Eddie Kidd 8 years later.
Would love to see an actual original game idea by highriser.
Sorry to disappoint you... In general I respond to what my community is interested in, most of them share my interest in gaming history, and coding these golden age games is a kind of deep archaeology for me. They also represent a neat and interesting set of specific challenges that the community also enjoys watching me solve, and something I can fit around my 'real' life. Most people seem to prefer that to me making something completely original. If you look at a lot of the work I've done, I've almost always brought new twists and original ideas into the games I've worked on, even if the core gameplay is not changed. In the end I'm doing something I enjoy that others seem to appreciate so I'm probably going to stick to doing that :)
But you know, if you want to see more original games, get coding!
@@HappyCodingZX there is nothing wrong with staying in your comfort zone, and if people buy the remakes more power to you.
@@TomMannCenturia Very subtle, though I personally prefer more direct criticism. I find that when converting games, the creativity comes from finding new and effective solutions to technical problems that had previously not been solved. The destination is known, it's how to get there that presents the challenge. If I wanted to stay in my comfort zone, I'd probably limit myself to commenting on the work of others.
p.s just to add an edit. Another important part is that I post regular videos discussing the various problems and how I overcome them in order to encourage others to get into coding. People are way, way more interested in how golden age arcade games are made possible than they are in another 'explore the rooms and collect stuff' game.
@@HappyCodingZX There is no criticism implied, I have no desire to leave my comfort zone in life in general so I don't see why anyone else should have to if they don't want to. The original post meant nothing more than I'd have liked to see what you could do with an original idea. You've explained you don't want to do that, fine, no further justification is needed, or was ever asked for, and if you can make a few bob from it and people enjoy them that's also good is it not. Anyway, all the best.
@@TomMannCenturia fair enough. Personally I make a point of stepping out of my comfort zone in terms of the technical challenges that converting these games presents. I deliberately choose to convert games that I feel have not been fully done justice to see if I can achieve something that hasn't been done before. I also enjoy the tightrope of reworking something classic and beloved, knowing I could fail badly :)
Sometimes you just want to stick to what you're good at and try to get better at it. It certainly hasn't done Jeff Minter any harm over the years.
Good to see the excellent new version of Pacman for the Speccy...Just a shame you kinda ruined it by having a background overlay with the game too! It was like a double exposure. A black background would have been much better so we could actually see the game properly.
The choice to buy is with the user. No one is forcing anyone to buy it. I was only reviewing it. You said there are cheaper interfaces that did the same thing. I am genuinely interested in any interface that works with 30 systems and is cheaper. If there is one, I would certainly buy it.
