04:12 that little link to the right of the spring tensioner is where you take the belt off, its like a bike chain link. Then to the left of the spring tensioner is a tiny bolt with two nuts to remove, then remove the gear by the door by wrenching the top of the gear bracket bolt while loosening the nut on the bottom. Then go to the top of the motor housing and remove the two screws holding the guide housing that sits on top of the gear, and whoolah! Reverse to replace belt!
Ok,, my HD900d opener was spinning around the stripped belt and I have no idea if the motor is in the proper position for belt installation like when it came out of the box new in 2009. It may be in the open position, it may be in the closed position, or somewhere in between.... It's unclear if there's a procedure to get it set up for the new belt or does it not matter ? I'd appreciate some guidance.
Howdy, partner! You should be good once you get a new belt on. Just need to adjust the sliding carriage part to be in the proper position with the closed door. Good luck and hope that helps!
How important is the spring on the belt? Mine is missing because all the hardware flew off. It still opens and closes but I feel like without the tension the nut is going to back off again
Hey, partner! You should be able to just push in on the two black plastic tabs on both sides of the shield. While the tabs are depressed rotate the shield downward. Thanks for watching!

I’m about to make a quick video with my phone showing my dilemma to make sure we are speaking about the same part when replacing a belt. My manual refers to this particular part as the “Tension Assembly” and I will include it in my video on this channel under public view. (I don’t really have a channel). Lol
You did not release the tension on the spring where the chain link attaches to the long thread part. Since you took it off that way it tells me either you, if you originally installed the opener, or more than likely (hopefully) the garage door installers failed to release the tension on that spring so it could do it's job. There is another youtube video, th-cam.com/video/KAldIIRNsSw/w-d-xo.html, that discuss that very spring portion. As that gentleman stated, the door will still work, but the belt will wear out more quickly. You mentioned they sent you the belt during warranty period, which explains why you had a failure of the belt during the warranty period. You did not release the spring so that it could expand and do its job as a spring. The washer with a notch in it (at the right of the spring) has to be rotated to release the spring. Put a screwdriver in the notch and turn to release the spring.

That last nut and bolt goes on the long screw before you put it through on my opener
