30:10 [In Japan, people are thinking “how can I accommodate other people”, but in the U.S is “how can people accommodate me.” ] I felt that this is a kind of perfect expression to describe the difference between western culture and Japanese culture!!
Americans do hands-on probably because even if you hire someone to do the job, that plumber or gardener does crappy job and you end up finding it’s not worth spending money on something that you can do almost as good as that “professional”.
It wasn't that thought-provoking for my taste. Since I don't know much about Asian studies or Japan study at a higher education, it would've been nice if you could've expanded on that subject. Oil change or fixing stuff around the house is a guy thing. DIY on micro level or individual basis, I believe it's flourishing with the help of platform like TH-cam here in Japan as well. I'm sure this talk is suited for the target audience but I'm always drawn to something technical or specialized knowledge. You selected that cultural context in the title but this ended up two white dudes agreeing on what some of us already know. The talk of number plates were interesting to hear. I like the show so far but it's missing ,,,, certain _je ne sais quoi_. Is the mentality that different? So I investigated the Oscar controversy. I used to like RDJ, Emma Stone and JLaw. Well, JLaw said something stupid about other respectable female actresses who came before her but I like them all just fine. Then I watched the actual footage and breakdown of the event on TH-cam. FUNG BROS and a white dude's video explained the most of what I needed to know. 1 The world is all that is the case. 1.1 The world is the totality of facts, not of things. Comparing with what I used to know of Hollywood, everything's so bizarre these days. Post-modern critical thinking is not going away. And Japan sure is a part of it. I guess this show is a genre of its own and I can't complain about it. Some Japanese may not care for deeper understanding in the first place. Distinction needs to be made where one can find meaning and significance of their own.
