Yes, this was the topic I wanted you two to talk about. When Covid was settling down, the government had to say that wearing a mask is now dependent on the individual although it was really like that from the beginning.
Hi Austin and Arthur!
At starbucks etc, Japanese school girls are often bashing ugly girls in their school. But at the same time, when they take selfies, they keep saying how ugly they look. My guess is, they don’t like to see ugly faces in public, they are not confident enough to show their face in public bc showing ugly face is Meiwaku. They might be feeling like they don’t have the right to show off their “ugly” faces. tbh, I was wearing mask too before covid when i was feeling insecure. it felt like a helmet.
Ha. I had to laugh when you mentioned the people walking into Walmart with a thin bit of fabric as a mask. When I was in Japan on holiday, post covid, I saw a mask for sale that was lace. There was almost nothing to it and it certainly wouldn't stop anything passing through.
If you look upon the critics's resonse on Sanada and Nishioka's acting on the Seppuku scene in part 8, you'll find how they praise how they expressed their feelings and thoughts through their eyes. You guys knows what "Mejikara" and various other Japanese sayings about how Japanese express their emotions through the "gaze" of one's eyes!!
My daughter when she was in junior high, she didn't want to show her mouth in public at school. She was just in "chuunibyou".Even in music class she didn't want to take her mask off,she wasn't be a good student for her music teacher. But after graduated junior high she became a good girl. Now she is a nurse wearing mask❤,working at a hospital.
One another reason of wearing masks, most Japanese have hey fever… And just in my mind, there are some unspoken rules about makeup and beard in our workplace, we don’t need to care about it as long as we hide our face.
I guess we are not allowed to talk back in Japan, so to express your real opinion, you have to look away to tell the truth. (If you are looking straight into their faces, you must tell superficial polite sayings that are matched to the traditional rules. In the US, you are supposed to convince the receiver that you are telling the truth with all of your body languages (facial expression, hand gesture, body posture, etc). So, if you are hiding your mouth, you could be smirking 😏 or sticking your tongue out 😛, so people would feel suspicious or not trust-worthy.
Insecurities. In Japan, people want to blend in so much so that they prefer hiding faces. In the US, people need to stand out so much so that if you are wearing masks, you are showing off that you are medical professional, or you are so cool and/or about to rob something 😂
In Japan, people have finally been able to talk to each other square. A few decades ago, younger people had to show polite manners to older adults. That was a traditional rule. At that time, it was considered rude for young people to look at older adults's eyes straight. This habit remains today. Japanese estimate other people's emotions from the tone of their voice and changes in gestures. In a sense, Japanese culture is estimation and speculation.

For some Japanse girls, wearing mask is almost as same as wearing panties. They don't want to show their private zone.
For Americans, the masks were your fashion statement during covid. They drew smiley mouth on it 😃, or wear chin mask 😅 (or diaper chin!?)🤣
本を始め、漫画、教科書、辞書などの話をして欲しいです。
they just wanna hide their faces.
