My Japanese friend founded out the first time that her father was Zainichi Korean after he passed away. Her parents had kept this secret to protect her from experiencing racism in Japan. As for me, growing up in Japan with a European mother, my story is quite different compared to many white mixed-race Japanese individuals here, who typically have a Japanese mother. I'm grad that you talk this topic from various perspectives!

I know personally many second-generation Korean and Chinese residents in Japan who have obtained Japanese nationality. However, there are some Korean residents in Japan who choose to retain their nationality, especially those from North Korea. It's not that they can't obtain Japanese nationality.
I lived in Japan and the US. Racism in the US is generally not subtle. It CAN be subtle, or at least covert, in the form of micro aggressions. However, the US was and is a violent place to be when it comes to racism, sadly. Japan has very overt racism with some of the policies there. They don’t try to “disguise” it like in other places. However, there is also generally not the threat of violence in their intolerance, as can be found in other places. Statistically you wouldn’t feel unsafe. Whereas the stats in other places show there is an increased risk of being a victim of violence and force based on one’s race.
One thing I felt in Japan is that, even if you are Japanese, if you don't belong to the main group(I guess I can use the word 'norm' here), they'd discriminate those 'outsiders', relating the racism topic to general discrimination in the society. I feel like you are expected to just swallow whatever the things the society shoves into your throat, (basically being expected to be obedient and not to oppose or question) so it kinda already feels like being a slave by just being in the society.
It’s our fear that you want to attack the others. It’s kind of fight or flight response. “Where love exists, fear cannot exist. Fear is a state where love is lacking.” As human, in order to secure your safety, you automatically feel like you should attack the others. But actually it works opposite. You need to know that the other persons are also humans, and we are the same things. We feel the same emotions when the things happen to us, and we need to love each other more than the barriers society creates. That’s our forever struggle (of war, hate, いじめ, segregation, racism, sexism, and everything else that’s not of LOVE.)😢💔
One Person Tribe is good phrase. I grew up in London, but I never felt like I fit in as a British person. I thought Japan would accept me, but in reality, I struggled to fit in with the delicate nuances and subtly ironic British humor, even though I grew up with it. While I found comfort in the unrelated US when I became an adult, I realized that I couldn't become Japanese.
I don’t mind the nuances of humour and culture in the UK, it suits me. But there are plenty of other things there that don’t. I’m even thinking I might have been discriminated against as a non Anglo Saxon celt more than I realized while living there. That being said, my own people were just as oppressive. At least I can escape that in Japan .
I recognized there was a racism here in Japan as well. Thank you for the interesting live program. And happy to feel from this video your love to both countries 🇯🇵🇺🇸
The reason Koreans living in Japan don't have Japanese nationality is their choice, not because the Japanese government doesn't give them nationality. Most of my Korean friends have Japanese citizenship. It's not that difficult. I want you guys to talk about xenophobia in Japan. Why do Japanese people avoid sitting next to foreigners on the train? and staff, some day.
It's not because Japanese hate you, but because we Japanese are not good at accepting different things. We just like to being the same. Most of us can't accept the different things. Not only people but things in the world. In Japanese peoples relationship, if i am different from the other colleges, ill definitely be excluded from the organization very easily. I don't like that kind of atmosphere even though I'm Japanese.

I’m sorry about your experience with police, but it is very common all over the world. I grew up in country side of U.S. and police car always slowed down and checked up on me. That was sad experience at the time, but I think they’re just doing their job, because foreigners tends to have conflicts with citizens due to difference in culture, and once you let non-citizen criminal escape it is really difficult to catch them. As police officers start to recognize me as residence of the town, they friendly waved at me as they pass by.
I tried listening to this with an open mind, but I have to admit that listening to two white men talk about racism is absolutely absurd. Around 35:32 the one on the left says he feels race is talked about too much and in order to heal it shouldn't be. That's exactly the problem. If the history of racism isn't taught properly, it's bound to repeat itself. You hear many white people in the states talk about ''pick yourself up by your bootstraps''. The reason you hear things like that is because they aren't taught history correctly. They assume their ancestors were just these amazing inventors, pioneers, people who just got it out the mud, and a lot of that is highly inaccurate. Many of them benefitted from government aid. Territories in the west were practically gifted to white people. Meanwhile Black people weren't really ''equal'' till about the 90s and then you still have systemic racist policies in place even then. How are you going to ''heal'' by just ignoring it? Ridiculous.
I feel like most of zainichi korean they just choose to be Korean rather than Japanese. It's not about system but how they have huge pride for having korean background. I guess they can technically become Japanese if they registered for Japanese citizenship.
Once was walking around Tokyo station with my friend and his Thai co-worker. We walked a convoluted route because the Thai guy was working illegally and wanted to avoid police checks. Saw my friend a month later and found out his former coworker was picked up in a random police check. Sure, police checks can be an inconvenience, but the police are doing their job by "targetting" groups that are more likely to be illegally in Japan.
I can't believe people criticize police officers who work hard to maintain public order. 🤷 All you have to do is show your residence card and talk. I can understand if people living in the country illegally complain. 😂
Yes it's a bad thing. There is no such thing as rational discrimination. That's like saying it's okay to profile black people because they commit most of the crime in the U.S.
Japanese right-wingers often talk about the special privileges that Koreans and Korean-Japanese have, and how they are treated better than Japanese citizens. For example, their real names are not reported even if they commit a crime, and they are much more likely to receive welfare than Japanese people. It is also known that Mother Moon, an anti-Japanese emerging religious group that came to the forefront with the assassination of Shinzo Abe, has infiltrated Japanese national politics and plotted various conspiracies, and there are more problems between Japan and the Korean peninsula than foreigners think ☹️
In a society like Japan where being direct and confronting people are viewed as an aggressive attitude, ignorant racist incidents are extremely difficult to address in Japan. It was honestly easier to resolve someone who expressed hatred because I get my say, but boy those politely delivered microsgressions make my eyes roll 😒
Although America is seen as a white-dominated society as a whole, there are still those pockets in America where whites are a minority. Things like "Kill Haole Day" in Hawaii, non-Latino growing up in certain neighborhoods in places like Miami, etc. But being a minority can change depending on where you live. I can explain why. And typically has nothing to do with "hate" or any current narratives. Covid did create a few such stories for US Media to concentrate on. But that's not really what is going on. I saw this type of thing a well over a decade ago in Chicago. Its not new. Bigger guys would target Asians not because they were Asian but because they happen to be smaller. Easier targets. And if these thugs hear you are not speaking English, they will stereotype you as shy and wanting to avoid conflict. Thus an even easier target. Bad people just look for the path of least resistance. If they know you can fight back or have a weapon, they pick another target. Yes, mental illness plays a part but they still are coherent enough to pick their targets.
You mentioned the living in Japan reddit. I'd love to know what your take on that and the Teaching in Japan subreddits are. I've always felt like the posts and comments on there are super exaggerated and toxic. But maybe my expectations of reddit are a bit off since I go there expecting honesty and mutual respect. You can probably tell I don't use that site much. 😂
most white foreigners come to japan because they are escaping from something in themselves. But they carry those problems with them. Lots of these people dont take responsibility and moan about their lot in life. Reddit is also known as the cesspool of the internet. I always find the threads very toxic and not good for people who want to live good lives.
It was interesting to hear 'Racism in the US is a lot more subtle' and 'Racism in Japan is more blatant. I guess black Americans and asian Americans have a totally different opinions. How many innocent black people were killed by police in the states? How many innocent asians were beaten by black guys the states? I love America but most people in the world consider The united states is a Mecca of Racism. Foreigners living in Japan always complain when police officers question them, but you should know that the way Asians are treated in Western countries is nothing short of subtle.
I can explain why some countries don't allow duel citizenship. The point of citizenship is loyalty to a country. So what would happen if the two countries that you have citizenship to go to war with each other? That's why they don't allow duel citizenship. They demand your undisputed loyalty.
My younger brother is a skinhead with a beard and looks like a professional wrestler. He says he is questioned by the police every day. One day, as we were walking in front of the 交番, the policeman conducted 持ち物検査 only for him, I was exempted.
I expected Arthur and Austin would mention that America didn't allow Japanese immigrants to become naturalized citizens until 1952, but they didn't. They talked as if America has been always party people when it comes to citizenship. American immigration laws were very, very racist, and the 1950s are not so long ago.
I'm so sick of people saying things like this. No one is responsible for things that happened before they were born. "Hey guys, everyone from Mongolia is a horrible person because Ghengis Khan killed babies in the 1200's " 🙄🙄🙄
My thoughts here: I think this is a difficult topic, especially when you mix racism with avoidance. Mono ethnic states (and I know, there aren't such things as mono ethnic states really but,) like Japan naturally have some kind of avoidance to outsiders, simply because they're different, and we don't know about them, and communication could be bad. That's why renting houses is hard, someone won't sit next to you on the train, etc. I understand this is annoying...😢 Meanwhile there are weird treatments to foreigners and non-Japanese feeling people by the police, that mainly comes from distinction and trends, like when foreigners tend to be troublesome why not check them and prevent something bad will ever happen? ik It is not good to distinct people by their looks... but it works alot... Because the same things are done within Japanese too, like when the police mainly stops and talks to young women in Shinjuku, which isn't racism, and I believe it's the same thing with the gaijin thing in Shin-Ōkubo too. But yes, there ARE racism in Japan too, as mentioned in the video, against zainichi people, or even to pure Japanese people too (buraku problems).
Yes some japanese people are racist, BUT they would always used a subtle racism (or they have to be drunk and in a group to be openly racism) it's by my experience in the street : fake coughing, mouth's noise, bad eye contact... Once you understand that you can reply back doing the same as coughing back, mouth noise back of course always louder, keep the eye contact (they always finished by watch the floor at the end) ofc I respect their country, their people, their culture, I am learning japanese everyday, I respect their law and tradition...
For Arthur, it wasn’t because the police asked him about the bike. It was that his wife came out and said “私の自転車です” and they just believed here and left.
@@theaustinandarthurshow I'm a Japanese male and In my opinion, the reason the policeman believed her (Japanese woman) but didn't Arthur could be because she was a (Japanese) female and you were a (Foreign)male. I really hate this but Japanese police or court system (or even Japanese society itself) tend to believe women as innocent and male as guilty. For example: (a) when a couple is divorsed, the kids are in most cases taken by women because the court decides men are guilty (b) if a woman blames a man as chikan on train, policemen tend to believe woman (c) in toilets or sentos, women are allowed to serve to clean up male area but the opposite is not (because women don't do bad thing but men do) (d) women are treaded as cute, harmless and clean but men are treated like lesser creature (especially when they became ojisan or elder).
Hey Austion and Author! I've been enjoying your podcast. I have a question about racism. i think this is institutional racism. There's 2023 Academy Award lately and an obvious discrimination happend when Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Stone won Oscar. Why did they ignore the last year's winner from Asia?? It was so weird like they didnt see their eyes and nothing like they cant see them.. American are so sensitive about racism between black and white. I'd like to know you guys opnion on that.
ONCE I STUDIED THIS IN DEEP SA KO KU 😮 I had no problems Brushed 💩off Always knew I’d be considered an outsider Everyday I PLAYED THE TOURIST ROLE you’d be surprised at the benefits 😅 Spoke Japanese and they’d say Nihongo jozu desu ne 😅 And give me a puzzled look 👀
You are 2 white Americans in Japan. What you are describing is the Sama level of racism that black people describe in USA but you are downplaying it as if racism in Japan is not as bad. You use the word foreigner but what you really mean is non 100% Japanese. You could be half Asian born in Japan.
I was planning to visit there next month, but i am cancelling my ticket to Japan, they won't ever get a yen from me. Too many things add up after watching many videos on japan, japanese people seem very narrow minded and not welcoming.
I just came back from a 10 day trip in Japan. Went to Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo Disney Shinjuku and Shibuya. My experience overall was great. In Kyoto there were a few stares here and there but I never was gaijin seated and was treated well. Btw We were a group of 10 black people so some stared in amazement as wed pass by and greeted by elderly men at times. This was in early July. I recommend you visit it's worth the travel
It’s hitting peak right now. I’ve not seen anything like it in the long time I’ve lived here. I don’t know what right wing media people are consuming at the moment, but at this point in time, it’s the worst I’ve ever seen it here.
I think intellectual japanese people are pushing different japanese movements to vote against policies that would allow mass migration like it is in Europe. Japanese culture likes to see what the rest of the world is doing before copying it. They probably see that mass migration has been an epic failure for West Europe. They don't want their country to become that way too.
Left/Right are relative terms. But the American left is more associated with the race fetish and wanting to experience 'racism' and 'fight it'. I think the American 'right' doesn't really expect another country to just embrace foreigners for the heck of it. If you go to FNC or Breitbart and read a story about Japan banning tourists from a spot or having issues with a streamer, the comments will generally agree with Japan.
I have been questioned by the police in Japan outside. The first was when I was suspected of stealing a bike, which was over 20 years ago when I was a teenager. They make it sound like it's my fault for not registering it, even though it's not mandatory. Exactly the same as you experienced, I can't see any progress 😊 The second time, I was asked to show what was in my bag about 15 years ago. I heard they have some sort of quota on the number of arrests, but I think they've been working with 生徒会の風紀委員 mentality rather than a public safety professional for a couple of decades.
Thank you for sharing your experiences! Japanese people want to protect thier homogenous culture and living because they love them. And many of them hold the stereotype that "Gaijin" is trying to destroy it, unfortunately without any data but with only intution. For example, some Japanese believe that Japan is going to be unsafe because of immigrants criminals (the statistics doesn't show that.) As a Japanese, I am sorry for that. (As for the police's interview, it's their job to check a foreign people don't do illegal extension of their stay. It is like a Japanese riding an 1980's TOYOTA CROWN with number 8888 is more likely to be taken for drug inspection. I think it's very natural.)
What you call “other races” were of course known before 1600. But the current “Asian, Caucasian, African, Native American” categories are relatively new. for more info, please check this out nmaahc.si.edu/learn/talking-about-race/topics/historical-foundations-race
@julianstephens5361 0 seconds ago I have been refused service in Japan on many occasions. One person even said in English "We don't serve your kind here!" We have had our children denied access to public schools and have been refused housing because I am Caucasian even though my wife is Japanese. The concept that this is not recognised as racism by many people in Japan evidences that although Japan is an advanced society, it is still one of the most primitive ones on earth in many ways.

Minorities always stick out and are treated differently. We actually talked quite a bit about blatant racism in the USA.
American immigration laws were very, very racist, and the 1950s are not so long ago.
we did a little bit. we also talked about discrimination towards southern europeans. but it was mainly a discussion about racism now, not in the past.
Don’t forget what Japan did to Chinese in ww2. Unit 731
Yet, we have non-discrimination laws and Japan doesn't... its the past man and it doesnt change Japan's racism or make it less worse.
I'm so sick of people saying things like this. No one is responsible for things that happened before they were born. "Hey guys, everyone from Mongolia is a horrible person because Ghengis Khan killed babies in the 1200's " 🙄🙄🙄
@@Hay8137g It's a false history fabricated by the Chinese Communist Party.
My thoughts here:
I think this is a difficult topic, especially when you mix racism with avoidance.
I understand this is annoying...😢
Meanwhile there are weird treatments to foreigners and non-Japanese feeling people by the police, that mainly comes from distinction and trends,
like when foreigners tend to be troublesome why not check them and prevent something bad will ever happen?
ik It is not good to distinct people by their looks... but it works alot...
Shortly after my visit to Berlin, I noticed the problem of Turkish immigrants in Germany due to the number of kebab shops.
For example:
(a) when a couple is divorsed, the kids are in most cases taken by women because the court decides men are guilty
(b) if a woman blames a man as chikan on train, policemen tend to believe woman
(c) in toilets or sentos, women are allowed to serve to clean up male area but the opposite is not (because women don't do bad thing but men do)
(d) women are treaded as cute, harmless and clean but men are treated like lesser creature (especially when they became ojisan or elder).

Seriously?? People in Japan are generally very nice!

I think it’s because there are more tourists than ever before
I think intellectual japanese people are pushing different japanese movements to vote against policies that would allow mass migration like it is in Europe.
Why was my comment erased? I didn't say anything that fit the criteria of bigotry.

For example, some Japanese believe that Japan is going to be unsafe because of immigrants criminals (the statistics doesn't show that.)
As a Japanese, I am sorry for that.
(As for the police's interview, it's their job to check a foreign people don't do illegal extension of their stay. It is like a Japanese riding an 1980's TOYOTA CROWN with number 8888 is more likely to be taken for drug inspection. I think it's very natural.)
Different races were well known long before the 1600s. Your knowledge is incredibly shallow.
What you call “other races” were of course known before 1600. But the current “Asian, Caucasian, African, Native American” categories are relatively new. for more info, please check this out

I have been refused service in Japan on many occasions.
This is why Japan is slowly sliding away economically as most other countries progress. Sad!
