I have a request. I know it would take more time to edit but I wish you would compare positions one at a time. Pickup A bridge immediately followed by Pickup B bridge etc. I think we would get a better comparison that way. Thanks.
For anyone who wants to do that, they can just open two browsers of the same video and switch between them. I think most people are choosing among sets instead of mixing and matching. Turning each shootout from 8 clips a piece to 16 is a nightmare. Including keeping them all sorted and organized. I still like to play guitar and hang with my wife too! Haha. Cheers.
I've been examining the Throbaks and the WIZZ pickups for a short time. The Wizz pickup are about as exact as you can get to a real vintage era Gibson PAF when they are compared side by side. Gibson when you look at the literature concerning them from the era used a random selection of magnets based on what they could get in the moment and it was not a case of standardization in the formula in the moment. So the alnico 4's tend to sound smooth but its a situation of aged magnets when comparing the original era PAF's to the modern repro's....and an answer they do not publish as to the fact if they are weakening the magnets in the repro's to simulate aged PAF's......all you get is the alnico number they use which is typically a 2 or a 5. The Throbaks are more aggressive and the guy does hold true to the formula but they don't quite go on to be exacting to the original era PAF's when played side by side which may be due to the magnet. The guy does put forth a very very interesting situation with the original era PAF's that is overlooked, and that concerns the bobbin screws used to mount the bobbins to the base plate of the original era Gibson pu's……..they were not consistent as they could either use brass or steel screws. The big key is that the steel screws obviously are magnetic vs the brass types......and this is a very sensitive key ingredient to a PAF. The steel screw that secures the bobbins to the base plate effectively act as a hidden pole piece hiding from the back side and they are located between the low E and A strings and between the high E and B strings...….so string bends with these strings will be affected......you'd be normally bending away from the pole pieces but with the hidden steel screws acting as hidden poles.....you'd be bending away but back into another close proximal pole which is the secret mojo. AS with original era PAF's, some of these pickups have that special something and others do not.....and its subjective to the guitar they are in too......and its a total randomness with the magnet type and the steel screws. You have to sample many original PAF's to discover the steel bobbin screw thing. I have found that I prefer a pickup with a minimal bobbin winding as its a more clear signal as opposed to a high wind bobbin with more output...…….as the lower output makes the les paul more woody sounding and pleasant and not harshly aggressive like a 1970's guitar from the era of Dimarzio's and Duncan's & hard rock. Though a vintage les paul has its thing when cranked up and boosted, its boosting that mellow lower signal up......as opposed to boosting up an aggressive higher output signal which then can get to be too much and harsh. Throbaks do have their quality to them sonically, but the WIZZ's are more true
@Hope Browning the poles in a Humbucker are just metal slugs and collectively they are wrapped with a copper coil of thin wire....generalization. So 6 poles on each bobbin...... add the screw factor in on the 2 outer string to increase the amount of poles/slugs...but they don't ride right under the string......but they would require a string to be BENT OVER towards these hidden pole/slugs. These pole/slug conduct the magnetic field from the magnet exposure. So manufacturer's over time began to look at 6 slugs & the strings bent away.....and either increase the slugs on each coil ...OR....USED A BLADE....blade pickups.....so the string bends constantly over a magnetic pole piece/slug....or basically a conductor of magnetism is always in play as the strings can't escape that . BUT if you applied a ferrous base plate to a humbucker and being its a bar magnet.......yes adding the base plate to the bottom of a pickup increases the inductor aspects and it pulls the magnetic field...depending on the mass of the base plate....so it pulls and softens the magnetic effects on the STRINGS and that end of the magnetic field in the equation. But a guitar pickup is nothing different than an AUDIO phonograph cartridge of modern times...which means a Moving Magnet or a Moving Coil....MM or MC. There is movement. SO in an electric guitar situation its the Movement of the strings in the presence of a magnetic field due to the pickups....transducers
Another excellent demo - I have a set of 1960 Gibson PAF pickups in my 1990 Gibson Les Paul Standard and a set of the Wizz Premium Clones in my 2000 Gibson Les Paul Classic - I think the Wizz pups are much closer to the original Gibson PAF pickups. The Throbaks are great, amazing really. They remind me on the Tone Specific '59 Blues set which I own - they're both just a different take on a humbucker PAF with a brighter lift in both neck and bridge along with very clean pick articulation at clean or distorted settings - and to me, that's not what the original PAF pickups give you. I have played both a '59 Les Paul and a '57 Les Paul. What the original Gibson PAFs and the Wizz Premium Clones give you in a newer Gibson Les Paul is as close to a '59 Les Paul Standard as you can get in my opinion. To me key the difference is at full volume and most importantly in the volume roll-off - the breakup is there, sweet as ever along with insane sustain even at 5 on the volume, super rich woody tone. Thanks again.
I still like that certain hollow midrange (mojo?) the Wizz have most but I like the Throbaks almost as much. They do sound a lil stronger but that's not always what I want. So far these 2 are my favorites. I didn't think I liked alnico 5 but now I think I do. Alnico 5 short mag or long mag? They make both. Thanks again! Too bad the Throbaks cost so much. Ugh!
Very nice demo. Good to see a comparison where the player is focusing on making the sound comparison and not showing how good he plays ! I vote for WIZZ which to me are closer to the PAFs (I have a set of real PAFs in a LP 52 conversion). Throbaks sound more modern with less organic feel. Just my opinion.
Sure it is. It is the same guitar, same signal chain, same amps, same settings, same cables, same recording levels. Some pickup makers don’t even offer all types of magnets in their options. I’m comparing differences between popular flagship sets from different winders. Magnets are included in those differences. I prefer to just listen instead of worrying about magnet type. And I wasn’t being snark. If that’s something you want to see, then make one. Cheers!
Yes I’ve seen it, and all the others. They are great, and part of the inspiration to my playlist of almost 30 shootout vids. They also compare lots of different pickups with different magnet types. In fact, almost every shootout vid they have recorded include different magnet types.
i believe each player must experiment with their own rig to find their personal "holy grail" of tone. That signal chain of fingers-strings-pickups-amp is so player specific that i don't see how one can determine the "best" pickup for the masses. Average folks can't afford to devote the time/money to do taste tests like this but they can use the multitude of reviews to whittle down to their top 3-5 favorites and select the set they feel is best. i dare say, that player, assuming they have some talent, will sound terrific regardless of their choice. i LOVE gear but the endless theorizing and philosophizing just plain wears me out! Years ago, pre-throbak and wizz (i guess) I went through the process and ended up with Skatterbrane A2 yinbranes in my LP and A3 jizzbranes in my 335. every luthier that works on these instruments over the years goes berserk over the sonic brilliance-were they the best? are throbaks as good or better or not as good?.....I'd rather just play some blues, baby!!
Yea. I agree. The best way is to buy them used. Pickups are rarely ever mistreated and it makes it easier to buy and sell id they aren’t for you at minimal loss. Also, it really is micro-changes. A good set of pups will sound great in a band with the rest of the signal chain intended to do so as well. But its fun to try them!
(In YOUR guitar, with YOUR playing) ... the Throbaks sound stronger in the lows and low/mids, more authoritative and less compressed over the whole range, and have more clarity, spank and attack. The Whizz's sound quite a bit more compressed, weaker lows, a bit hollow sounding and they're definitely thin in comparison to the Throbaks . They also "give" more, making them squishier and creamier sounding ..with a slight chorusing effect to their harmonics. The Throbaks sound very present and retain clarity and note separation, while the Whizz's sound somewhat congested and a bit distant. Very different sounding pickups for sure. As always, it comes down to personal preference and playing style. For me personally, in your Les Paul, I'd choose the Throbaks for sure. My $0.02
Btw: I am going to be using these same clips, but building videos of lots of comparisons. So look for lots more vids of them all played next to each other. Same licks, same everything.
Well guys, I have to tell you as an owner now of the throwback SLE 101+ pick ups. It appears that they’re being compared to the wiz premium in this video. Well would it be a more accurate comparison to compare the throwback SLE 101S or standard, which is their true PAS clone do you 101 is an overwhelmed clone so it’s not a Apple to Apple comparison in regards to pick ups in this particular video, but I can tell you that the throwbacks are definitely smokin, and probably the best pick ups have played most versatile sounding for all compositions And I have been successful with them gigging now for about a week and truly just have never played a better parent pick ups, and I had wiz and another guitar and truthfully just prefer the throwbacks all the way they also make a great version of the park Kossoff pick ups as well as lust for tone, makes an excellent alnico for alnico too and I’ll Nico five PAF there’s plenty of them out there, but these are certainly true of the best but these are Apple to Apple comparisons there two different pick ups There’s no way this is a degaussed alnico five magnet degaussed to almost the strength of a strong for the wiz is the ghost. Also, if you look, they degauss the magnets for aging purposes, check your specs guys and you keep on rocking man as always excellent playing I’m sure you know who I am by now 3:523:52

I preferred the Throbaks, but you should have compared like magnets. If they were both Throbaks I’m sure I’d prefer the A5’s over A4’s.
Make us a video that compares like magnets.

The JTM45 combo with a G12H30.
