Shifting: Back in 84 when I started racing 250's, I read an article in MXA about starts/shifting. They had 3 ways: 1) Let off the gas, pull in the clutch, shift, gas/clutch/go. 2) Let off the gas, don't pull the clutch, shift and go. 3 Leave the throttle wide open, don't pull the clutch, and jam it in the next gear. So I practiced my starts on a dirt road where I can see the moist roost. (I did not try method 3. Sounds like more tranny work.) Immediately I noticed, between methods 1 and 2, that the coasting patches between the gears were shorter when using method 2. So I always got good starts doing that, but my finishes could have been better. :) MXA today says using the clutch is the fastest way. I sure don't know about that magazine today.
