      Thanks for the video! Is there a way to show the length of a line while drawing it? Can you even type in a measurement (while drawing) to achieve a specific length like you can in other software like AutoCAD or SketchUp?

    Always good to have an X-Y zero point, much like laying out the foundation of a building; line lengths or dimensions for other objects can usually be entered via a dialog box, then it's just a matter of moving/snapping the object to its location.

    Thanks for the video Dave. Also, you can also switch to outline view when trying to align objects. By the way, I did try to lighten up my artboard to use as a pasteboard but it doesn't work on my machine. When I drag off an object off the artboard into the pasteboard, it doesn't show at all even after changing the colour as you recommended.

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, that one is outside my experience. I would have to default to standard math (C = π D) ·/· .25 = a quarter curve, but that could be the wrong way to go about it too.

      @@DaveConrey thanks for your reply. I’ve resorted to low tech and by using Ctrl 1 or Ctrl 8 the screen displays in actual size and then I literally put my IRL ruler up to it and rotate it around the curve as I would on piece of paper. Not exact but will suffice for my needs. Thanks for the video.

    Hello, So I want to just draw a line and get a measurement on it, can I do that? I want to draw exact measured lines to create a pattern draft for clothing, and I need to have specifically measured lines. I am using Affinity Designer.

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The most accurate way would be to draw the line and then with it selected, use the Transform Palette to keep out the exact measurement needed. If you need a demo, I’m doing a Q&A episode on Monday. Look out for that.

      This is my same issue. I design and make leather handbags. I do the hard copy first then upload them into AD. I need all of my pattern pieces as you know with clothes to be exact measurements. I also teach some of my designs. I need to export them into PDF format and make sure they are to scale. Thank you for great videos. I know lots of designers are using AD because CAD are expensive so AD is a great choice. Do you have or can you do something specific to fashion and accessories?

    Dear Dave how are you?
    I have a problem In affinity designer. I was making a basic geometric shape in one to one (scale) 6cm x 3cm, I know how to use the ruler on Affinity, (from the corner and drag it to the drawing in order to measure the eighth and length). Yet measuring the drawing with a "tape measure" when printed on a A4 paper is not 1/1, which means 6.3 x 3.2cm.
    How come? can you please help me?
    Regards

    Is there a way to print the dimensions instead of just displaying them on the screen? I use Specees plugin on Illustrator and CorelDraw also has a dimensional tool that allows you to draw the actual line with the measures of the object.

    Hi great video. I would like to know if I’m uploading and tracing my pattern pieces into AF what do I need to do to make sure they print to scale? I have been asking this question and seem to not get any answers. I’m a handbag pattern designer. I do all of my designs by hand, then upload them into AF to digitize them by using the pen tool. I need them to print out to size correctly. What settings should I use to export them in? What points should I use to trace them, and what settings should I use to scan them in correctly? Currently I upload and print then out in 300 dpi.

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Build your document to scale and high resolution (300 dpi) and you shouldn’t have any problems.

    Isn’t there a possibility to just set the properties of a line or a square…with numbers? I am new to this program but used AutoCad in the 90’s and even then you could just type in the exact parameters for a line or a square and then put them in place and move them around as objects…not being possible to be accidentally changed…I guess there must be a way in this program to achieve this…🤔

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, in the transform fields. That just takes more effort and some are all about efficiency.

  • @dadduorp

    Man, what a pain to create/modify objects! You'd think it would be something simple enough like selecting an object and have a box appear in the Menu/Tools where you can then input the exact coordinates. Macromedia Freehand used to have that until %#@& Adobe acquired and then killed the program. Rat bastards.

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also use the transform palette too,

  • @truckeralvarez5932
    @truckeralvarez5932 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Sorry, but you made a small rookie mistake, the guy that sent the file did not tell you where the baseline was in that line. Normally, it is treated as the centre line of the object unless otherwise indicated.
    So, you are explaining where the centre line might be and therefore having different results in your measurements.
    Finally, you were right to indicate that he had some alignment issues in his drawing, hence the possible mismatch.
