Wow...i learned more than I expected. I did not properly understand joining and using the pen tool versus the node tool versus the pencil tool. I am very excited you have taught these techniques clearly as it reduces my learning curve a LOT. Thanks for inspiring us and not treating us like dummies. You assume we have little knowledge of certain features (we're here aren't we? ;-) ) and you expertly provide the base of knowledge we need. I imagine you in a classroom...generous, clear and thorough. But here you are...the youtube classroom! thank you!
I don’t know too much about affinity and just got this app for my iPad. And I don’t know. I just feel your video is very helpful for me to understand this app and a good habit focusing on a working flow! All the tricks and tips are helpful without any ads or waste time talks! Thank you! I appreciate your video!
WOW, you made my start to tracing and vector-art with Affinity-Design so easy! Thank you, step by step, not to fast, just the way you can get along with... GREAT WORK! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I'm just starting out with this software and have no experience what so ever, your tutorial has made such a difference in understand things, I'm glad you spent the time talking at first and speed up just when needed, I'm sure it might be boring for some but being new this is what I needed to fully understand. Thank you so much, really much appreciated. I have subscribed so look forward in learning this great software.
Thanks for these Affinity Designer videos, Alex. I bought both Designer and Photo in the last year and know that your tutorials (on everything!) always give me useful insights that I otherwise might not have discovered on my own.
It is a great tool but it lacks some features that we need to make our work easier: • shape builder (works like boolean operation but more flexible) • multi-purpose tools (e.g. the Pencil Tool in Ai can also work as path Smooth Tool when ALT key is pressed) • UI scaling • Gradient Controls widget • Eye dropper tool to copy object or text attributes and apply it to other objects • Pasting in place • feature to search for specific commands to configure in the Settings and Keyboard shortcut • Easy to use alignment feature • and many more I wish the developers will add these features as I really love *Affinity Designer*
I also want to say!! Nice ambient music, very well explained, right-paced, detailed, useful, explains the tools and their purpose, targets possible errors the user might make... Great tutorial!!!
At last - a tutorial I can follow and understand!! Have been searching high and low for one, so thank you very much for taking the time produce this video :)
Thank you Alessandro, this class is wonderful, you have saved me from going crazy and trying to be perfect with the pen tool, all the close up and walking me step by step is what I needed, I have a SkillShare account and there are no teachers to guide us on this technique, you should really think about teaching there also. You are an excellent teacher and your channel is amazing, keep up the great work and thank you so much!
Hi, thank you so much for this beautiful comment :D I decided to do everything on TH-cam and not having any paid courses because I really think education should be free and accessible to everyone. I can sustain myself and keep this channel active thanks to some ads revenue and my patreon page, but other than that, all my videos are and will always be free. If you see some of my videos on SkillShare or similar platforms, that means they were stolen and uploaded by someone else (already happened multiple times :P). I will definitely do more tutorials about Affinity Designer. Cheers
I certainly will let you know, and I will report it a s plagiarism to Skillshare, because your techniques are in high demand, and I will check your patreon page to support you there also! Thank you again for your hard work in bringing these wonderful videos!

You, good sir, are a life saver! :) Your videos are the first ones I found that really helped me understand how to do stuff in this programm. Thank you for the detailed yet simple explanation!!
I want to thank you for answering some essential questions when tracing like using the option key and joining curves ....keep it going your tutorials are very much appreciated as you explain the why, and how to do things from a beginners perspective...
Thank you so much for your positive comment, I'm really happy to know my videos are helpful for you. Often I see other users tackling only the cool and advanced parts of a software, forgetting about the basics. Those are the most important. Cheers
Im actually glad you did talk for the first ten minutes because most people just do stuff an don't explain what or why something happened. Nice tutorial.
Thank you. I'm new to graphic design and this software program. I appreciate your explanations while you take us through your process. Please- more tutorials!
I just found your tutorial and thank you. It was amazing to learn everything. You are an excellent teacher and share everything which really helps the beginner when trying to learn.
Great tutorial. Just like learning to play guitar, it's best for a beginner to go slow and develop technique. Once you have the basic technique it's feels right to go quickly. As this is a tutorial for beginners it's most appropriate to do it at this speed. I really enjoy your comments as you draw, I'm not at all bored or wishing you'd go faster. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Alessandro! This was exactly what I needed! Your thorough approach was much appreciated! We have the same tablet so this helped me believe I could do it! I've got the outline of my drawing done, and I'm off to search for your next video!

If I understood properly, you could duplicate that line to another layer and only edit what you need and keeping the overlapping part identical. I don't think there's a way to use a line from another layer in a new layer. I might be wrong, tho
Thank you for such a comprehensive tutorial, and for explaining things. I'm new to Affinity, but I've been using Photoshop for years, and have worked in MX Freehand a lot (haha, I know, that's like a lifetime ago). Your video illustrated Affinity's similarities and differences really well for tracing an object, and I'm definitely going to watch the rest of the series as well.

Hi Alessandro, great tutorial but background music is very distracting. You’ve clearly a lot of design experience to pass on to us which is very much appreciated. Geoff
I know this is a little old but I had question. I am just getting into trying out some digital art. If you do have a Wacom Intuos, would you use the pen/tablet the whole time? Or just for the pencil tool?
It's a personal choice, it doesn't really exist a right or wrong approach. I prefer to use the pen only when I don't have to do precise things, or moving vertex around by few pixels. I know designers that use only the pen for everything they do. A matter of habit.
What about the Apple Pencil? Can we draw with it in the ipad affinity designer? Sorry if it is a stupid question, but i just got the app... totally clueless
I didn't test the export features for AI, after I switched to Affinity Designer I never had the necessity to use illustrator again. Sorry I can't help you
Freehand is still and fastest platform for vector, like quickly drag color in freehand , like multi boards you have grip on pasteboard in freehand , but illustrator still don't have this fastest option why
why do my lines come out as pixelated lines it looks really ugly ...any help on how to get rid of that ? its not smooth its like in pixel form which is weird .
I don't think an option like this exists. I know that one of the developers don't really think autotrace is a valuable option. Check on their forum to see if they're planning to add that support.
Here is the way this should be done, and hopefully, will soon be a feature in AP and AD: 1) In AP make a selection of image with masking etc, whatever.... Save the selection. Pixel based selection are the best and most accurate. Selections of eye, nose, ears, whatever saved on different layers. 2) Import saved selection layers one at a time or all (Feature request needed) into AD as vector based path layers with an adjustable node complexity. Refine paths, fills, and composite image. There are many advantages of this workflow over Vector Tracing Tools (Inkscape, C Draw, Illustrator, others) which are obvious to experienced designers. One advantage for Serif is that it will promote the sale of both products, AD and AP. Wow! 100$ for both...incredible! Lack of conversion between pixel selection and paths is a glaring omission by serif...so far...GREAT COMPANY...they will add this feature if enough people request it!
Thanks for the reply. I have used vector tracing tools and they are OK, but making pixel selections to different layers and to save/export. even copy/paste, would be a great feature. One could smooth out the pixel selection as needed. etc to get the desired result in AD composite.
I have been using Corel Painter ( I like to call it the Overly Caffeinated Brush Factory) since early 90's. IMO When Corel bought the program everything changed for the worse. It is still a great program, it depends on what you want to do. I do selections/compositing and have a simple Pen and Watercolor style. AP actually has pretty impressive DAUB WC brushes that meets all my needs. LOVE the liquify persona for cartooning! Here is a short list of annoying Painter goofups: 1) NO WAY TO SHUT OFF THE ANNOYING TOOLTIPS (Since version 11). They constantly cover up things and give redundant info. They **** me off! They do not listen to experienced users and their complaints and requests! AP has a delay for tooltips...awesome! 2) Brush configurations are WAAAY too complicated and overblown. 3) There are a multitude of little quirky things. It seems like programmers get a great idea and then drop it before they add the polish, so to speak, Big Data, no decent resize options, no decent export file function, like PNG (you have to save PNG and reload RIF file) What a PITA! I could go on and on... If someone is a Painter user please comment. Also forget bloated, yet powerful Photoshop with subscriptions...no way! AD and AP are great. I am sure they will add things as people request...like I mentioned above. I do not work for Serif or Corel. Using new Ipad Pro with stylus as a "Wacom" type tablet, configurable inside Desktop AP, would be a great feature (without 3rd party subscription).
Isn't there a simple way, for instance on illustrator you can use image trace. Is there something like that, because if you have a really detailed illustration you will be there forever

it literally saves a file and asks if you want it back if the thing crashes or is closed off
why do my lines come out as pixelated lines it looks really ugly ...any help on how to get rid of that ? its not smooth its like in pixel form which is weird .
is there a way to auto trace bitmap like in inkscape?
I don't think an option like this exists. I know that one of the developers don't really think autotrace is a valuable option. Check on their forum to see if they're planning to add that support.
ok great thank you very much
Hi Alex, very useful tutorial while I wait patiently for you to find time to do the print-ready business card tutorial ;)
+Techni Smart yes, I think I'll do that right after I completed this character design.
Thanks for following
Is there any auto-tracing like Adobe illustrator?
Here is the way this should be done, and hopefully, will soon be a feature in AP and AD:
1) In AP make a selection of image with masking etc, whatever....
I'm sure this software will grow to include all the missing features
Here is a short list of annoying Painter goofups:
1) NO WAY TO SHUT OFF THE ANNOYING TOOLTIPS (Since version 11).
Awesome video, thanks for the great information!
You're very welcome, the next one is dropping a couple of days :D
Isn't there a simple way, for instance on illustrator you can use image trace. Is there something like that, because if you have a really detailed illustration you will be there forever
It doesn't exist an option like the on in illustrator unfortunately. It's a feature will probably be implemented in the future.
Thanks for letting me know.
You are a great teacher, thank you for this great explanation!
Thanks for watching :D
I dont know what im diong wrong , but i cant get it to cut how you do, is it diffrent on windows laptops? Can you help me out
It shouldn't be different.
