12:00 Kenobi baited Maul by doing Qui gons stance. He trained it over and over in his head those final moments before his master died.

To paraphrase Sam Witwer, the voice actor for Maul: "Maul walked into this fight thinking he was up against a desert rat, a failed Jedi hiding in the desert. In that final moment though, Maul realizes that this is not a failed Jedi in hiding, but a fully realized Jedi Master on active duty at the most important guard post in the galaxy."

The Kenobi duel with Maul was Filoni's homage to Akira Kurosawa's samurai films. Those same duels inspired American western shoot out duels. It is why it was so short but immensely deep.

Qui Gon, Duccess Satine and Maul all have something in common. All three died in Obi Wan's arms. And yes, Maul was physically and mentaly exhausted after spending so much time in the desert, his cybernetic legs were damaged by the sand (if you looks closely you can see some wires exposed), while Obi Wan was well rested and prepared (he knew Maul would eventually track him). A sad but fitting end for Maul, to finally let down of his hatred.

    • @caleblim6890

Actually that win was a psychological masterpiece from Obi-Wan, Maul was always going to lose. Kenobi purposely used Qui-Gon’s stance to tempt Maul into attempting the chin strike which Maul used in the leadup to killing Qui-Gon. Knowing exactly what was coming, Obi-Wan then played every move the same except for the last one, slashing straight down into the chin strike.
Beyond that, by this point Obi-Wan is greatly experienced and fully in tune with the Force. Maul is literally half the man he used to be and has been straining himself searching for more power. He draws upon the dark side through his hatred and pain, making him fast and strong enough to take down almost anyone.
Obi-Wan uses the hatred and desire for revenge against Maul, and along with Obi-Wan’s clarity of mind due to his new abilities gained from learning from Qui-Gon’s spirit of the Whills, he goes for the most effective move available.
An astonishing amount of storytelling packed into a few seconds of battle.

    1. Kenobi baited Maul. He switched to his master stance, which Maul recognized and switched his form to try and get him like he did to his master. But Kenobi replayed those moves ,fight over and over again in his head and found a way to beat Maul.
    2. When Maul referred to us, he meant everyone who was used, screwed over by Palpatine/ Darth Sidious. Savage, Mauls mother, the Night sisters on Mauls planet, Jedi. All who fell to him or used by him.
    3. All who where killed by Maul that Kenobi cared for, died in his arms. Including Maul himself. Poetic if i say so myself.
    4. Kenobi and Mauls relationship is really special, kinda like Batman and Joker in a way.

This fight wasn't supposed to be long. We're talking master level Kenobi, who's been getting stronger since the Kenobi series, and Maul. Maul hasn't done anything but obsess over revenge (no growth). It's a master vs a high school bully at this point. Also, Maul saying "us" just shows us that his issue was always with Sidious. Kenobi was just a catalyst.

An explanation of the duel: Aside from Filoni's desire to mirror real-life samurai duels (which were nearly always decided with only a few strikes at most), this duel was a culmination of their lives. Notice that Obi-Wan initially assumes his signature Form III: Soresu stance, but then switches to Form IV: Ataru (the same style that Qui-Gon specialized in and used against Maul on Naboo). At this point, Obi-Wan *knows* that he lives rent-free in Maul's head, and that Maul is extraordinarily tunnel-visioned on one thing: killing him. So Obi-Wan's sudden switch to Form IV causes Maul to adjust his stance in preparation to use the same move that killed Qui-Gon. But of course, Obi-Wan *wants* Maul to do that.
In The Phantom Menace, Maul attempted a one-two combo, to which Qui-Gon responded with a standard block (with his lightsaber pointed upright). Maul then broke Qui-Gon's defense by pushing his braced arms upwards (creating an opening to his center), stunning him by smashing Qui-Gon in the face with his saberstaff's hilt, then delivering the fatal strike.
But that *upwards* counter Maul did to break Qui-Gon's defense. Obi-Wan knew that was coming, and so he simply didn't block it (which would have resulted in Maul breaking that block and creating a fatal opening), but instead attacked right into it, focusing on the major weakness of saberstaffs: the very long hilt.
Notice that the moment Maul goes for the hilt bash to Obi-Wan's face, Obi-Wan is already countering instead of defending, and as a result, kills Maul.

This is probably the most well-thought-out lightsaber fights in all of Star Wars. Maul is burnt out and blinded by anger and revenge while Obi Wan is more in tune with the force than ever. They are clearly not at the same level anymore , so it was an easy win for Obi Wan. A long, drawn out fight would have suggested they are on the same level which would be an insult to Obi Wan at this point.

  • @hehu4025
    @hehu4025 ปีที่แล้ว +30

The chosen one is Anakin, not Luke. Kenobi says that Luke is the chosen one because he lost faith in Anakin who became Vader.
As for the fight itself, Kenobi uses the same style as Qui-Gon. However, there is a difference here. Kenobi always learns from his failures and gets better and better. Maul has learned nothing, he never comes to any conclusions.
Maul doesn't think what Kenobi is doing is a trap, he recognized this style and wanted to kill him just like Qui-Gon on Naboo. Maul really didn't want revenge on Kenobi, but on Sidious, but he knew it was impossible, so Kenobi was his target. Kenobi knows he will win and only activates his lightsaber when Luke's life is in danger. Maul, through his suffering and blindness to revenge, gets caught in this trap. He didn't think that Kenobi had analyzed the course of the duel on Naboo many times. He paid the ultimate price for it. Kenobi stabbed him in the heart.
During Season 2, Maul met Qui-Gon ghost off-screen, who spoke prophetic words.
"You feel pain. And while your anger can be used to destroy others, your pain will become the ultimate weapon that will destroy you. Your desire to hurt others will not repair the harm you have suffered. You must understand that only you can decide your fate. Because when this weakness in the form of revenge will be your ultimate defeat, it will cut you deeper than any lightsaber could ever do."

You may have noticed Obi-wan change his stance from what he did a lot during the Clone Wars to the stance Qui-gon Jinn had in Phantom Menace to goad Maul into using the same method he used to kill Qui-gon. Basically Obi-wan planned every moment of the fight and won before Maul made his first attack.

Actually, it's been stated that when two swordsman duel, fights don't last nearly as long or choreographed. It's a few strikes at best and the battle is over just like that. The battles are simulated in their mind and whoever out predicts the opponent wins. The battle is basically over before it even starts.
In this case, Obi-wan knew Maul's obsession with hatred and inability to let go of his past, so Obi-wan used his master's stance, which he knew Maul would try to use the same tactic he had used back then. As a result, Obi-wan knew exactly what to do in order to win.

I'm sure others have said it, but the reason Maul failed is because he tried to use the same exact move he did to kill Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan became a master of his defensive lightsaber form after seeing his master die and anticipated the move, and was able to counter it which is why it ended so quickly. Sam Witwer, who does the voice for Maul, broke it down on a podcast and talks about how beautiful and poetic the scene is.

  • @fakecubed
    @fakecubed ปีที่แล้ว +2

This is the greatest lightsaber duel in the entire franchise, and it was over as soon as Ezra came to Tatooine and went searching for Obi Wan. Obi Wan intended to simply evade Maul indefinitely, as long as it took for Maul to either give up trying to find him, or died in the desert from exposure. Obi Wan did not seek revenge for everything Maul had done, most notably the killing of his master Qui-Gon Jinn, and the Duchess Satine. Obi Wan has risen above it all, all the fighting with Maul in the past, all the wars, even the conflict between the Rebels and the Empire. Obi Wan doesn't care about any of it, it does not matter to him. The long years have made him into the wise Jedi he was meant to be, and he has a higher purpose. He must protect Luke Skywalker, so that Luke can someday defeat Darth Vader and the Emperor. It is his entire purpose, and going to fight Maul doesn't help with that at all. If anything, it jeopardizes that mission.
But Obi Wan isn't going to let Ezra die, either. So when Ezra comes to Tatooine, Obi Wan feels he should save Ezra, and as a result, Maul finds Obi Wan. Even then, Obi Wan doesn't wish to fight Maul. He doesn't ask Ezra to stay and help him fight Maul, he doesn't immediately attack Maul. He does what any truly wise Jedi Master would do, and simply tries to talk Maul out of it, tries to teach Maul something, and perhaps even redeem Maul, turning him away from the Dark Side.
But Maul is very confused. Obi Wan doesn't seem like he's been driven insane by the many years in exile. He's not consumed with anger like Maul is, at the loss of the Jedi Order, and the rise of Darth Sidious. Obi Wan isn't seeking revenge for the killing of Duchess Satine. Obi Wan is still talking like a Jedi, acting like a Jedi Master. How could that be? Maul deduces that Obi Wan has a purpose, some task he's carrying out, there on Tatooine. If there's a bright center to the universe, Tatooine is the planet that's farthest from. It makes no sense for Obi Wan to be there unless Obi Wan is on an important mission for the Jedi. Maul says this, and then Obi Wan knows to protect Luke Skywalker he must kill Maul. He doesn't want to, but he immediately ignites his lightsaber.
First we see Obi Wan take up a classic Soresu (Form III) stance, which he used extensively in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. This is the form he started using after Qui-Gon was killed in The Phantom Menace when both he and Qui-Gon used Ataru (Form IV). Soresu is the form he used in every encounter he had with Maul after Maul reemerged during the Clone Wars. This is Obi Wan falling into old habits, from the last time he fought Maul. It's his go-to from that era. Maul ignites the second blade of his lightsaber in response, knowing the fight is now imminent.
Next, we see Obi Wan go to into a different stance, with the blade out in front of him. This is the same one he will eventually use when first confronted by Darth Vader on the Death Star, in a few years time. This is Obi Wan's evolution since the Clone Wars, as he has been training in exile on Tatooine. We now understand that Obi Wan is not the same man he was last we saw him in Revenge of the Sith. He has been doing the special training that Yoda has been doing, to prepare to come back as a force ghost after his death. He has been spending all his days meditating, purging himself of whatever lingering darkness is inside him, all the old grudges that Maul is still holding on to, and he's been preparing to fight any enemy he needs to to protect Luke.
Finally, we see Obi Wan truly rise above Maul completely, apply the wisdom he's gained, and truly assess Maul for what he is. Obi Wan understands Maul better than Maul was ever capable of understanding himself. Obi Wan has been thinking about Maul all these long, long years. He's been thinking about how Qui-Gon died, how Qui-Gon could have defeated Maul. And Obi Wan knows that Maul is a broken thing, a truly lost person incapable of any growth or change, totally consumed by rage and hate. Obi Wan knows he can defeat Maul in three moves. All he has to do is what he does: Obi Wan takes up the exact same Ataru stance that Qui-Gon used, and then wait for Maul's reflexive, predictable attack.
Maul can't resist, he moves to attack Obi Wan just as he defeated Qui-Gon. Obi Wan simply blocks twice and then strikes Maul down. Three moves, it's over. Maul is shocked. He expected an easy victory. He saw Obi Wan make a mistake, assumed Obi Wan was just as broken and powerless as Maul is feeling. But he's defeated.
Then the realization comes to him. Maul understands just how outclassed he was, and that Obi Wan is nothing short of the greatest Jedi he has ever faced in combat. Obi Wan was so skilled, so powerful with the Force. Obi Wan has not been wasting away, he's been training, he's at the top of his game, and he's on the most important job that any Jedi could be doing.
Obi Wan takes Maul into his arms. It's an act of kindness, as Maul dies. It's the same kindness he showed Qui-Gon and Duchess Satine. He holds Maul the same way. Obi Wan didn't want to kill Maul, he simply had to, to protect Luke, and he ended Maul in the most efficient way he could so as not to draw it out. It was like putting down a rabid dog. There was no malice in it, just a job that was necessary to do as a Jedi Master. He pities Maul, and doesn't want him to die in pain and fear.
Maul, understanding only too late, asks Obi Wan if he's protecting the Chosen One. It's all that Maul can possibly think of that would be so important for a Jedi Master at the absolute pinnacle of the Jedi arts to be protecting. Obi Wan tells Maul that it is the Chosen One that he's protecting. It's not the truth, but it may very well be sincere. After everything that's happened, Obi Wan can't believe that Anakin is actually the Chosen One, which canonically, he is. Obi Wan believes Luke is the Chosen One because of all the evil Anakin did when he turned. Obi Wan doesn't know the future, and none of the Jedi ever understood the prophesy.
And neither does Maul. Maul is still consumed with his hate, his anger, his desire for revenge. With his last breath, he does have hope, hope for revenge, hope that the Chosen One will somehow make everything Maul has suffered worth it through an act of revenge. Again, Obi Wan just feels pity for Maul, closes his eyes. He's sad that Maul still never really learned a thing, and that Maul still died in the Dark Side.
At every step in the duel, in the words said before lightsabers are ignited, and what follows, we see exactly who and what Obi Wan is. It is a perfect fight, and the only proper end these two characters could have for their relationship. It wouldn't make sense for a long fight to occur. Obi Wan, at this point in the story, is really that good, and Maul is really that mentally and emotionally weak. Maul is probably the most tragic figure in all of Star Wars, and it's fitting that Obi Wan, probably the best Jedi in all of Star Wars, is the one to close his eyes for good, giving him the mercy of a quick death, and a bit of hope and kindness as he cradled Maul in his arms.

In no way shape or form no matter how rested, how much he trained, in his prime Maul would have died the same way in this fight, as soon as he read Obi-Wans mind and figured out what he was protecting Maul had sealed his fate. At this moment I truly believe Obi-Wan was the best swordsman in the galaxy. This was I think 3-4 years before A New Hope and you can tell how much he sand bagged against Vader on the Death Star because he wanted to become one with the force to help/motivate Luke.

Oke, I want to point something out that really shows how far Ezra has come.
He understood that Obi-Wan had a purpose and that purpose meant he couldn't join the fight or anybody knowing he was still alive, so he completely kept this a secret (like, as far as we know he didn't even tell the Ghost-Crew, including Kanan, who he usually tells everything).
Also, based on the fact that he came back with Mauls ship and only could say they would not see Maul again, he now looks like the person who took Maul down to everybody else which is wild. The whole Rebellion will see Ezra as the person who finished of Maul BUT instead of boasting about it like he would have done in previous seasons (even at the beginning of Season 3) he didn't even say he killed him. He just said "we won't be seeing Maul again" which isn't even a lie.
In addition this also tells us that Ezra had so much trust in Obi-Wan that he didn't question him being able to win against Maul one second.
The last part I am personally not sure about is the only other character who knows the truth: Chopper. I honestly think he would be loyal as a whole (especially if Ezra asked him not to talk about it) but I also do think he would never be untruthful to Hera and I think Ezra knows that. So, there is also a real possibility that Ezra actually wiped Choppers Database of this one interaction he had. I honestly think both versions are great:
In one Ezra trusts Chopper enough that he could hold such an important secret, even against Hera
In the other Ezra cares so much about Obi-Wan being kept a secret and removing his mistake of looking for him that he would even wipe a bit of Choppers Database which I think would be very hard for him to do.
Which version do you prefer (whoever read until this moment, if any). I really want to know.
I personally can't decide fully but I am (I think) actually leaning towards the second one where Ezra wipes this event from Choppers Database as I think this really shows that Ezra understands the importance of Obi-Wan and that he knows he messed up by looking for him and wants to correct that mistake

This is by far the best lightsaber battle that Star Wars has ever shown. The meat of the battle takes place in the dialog but their difference in power levels gets revealed in the stance choices they make. Obi begins with masters form and Maul takes the correct stance to counter. Then Obi changes his form and Maul does not. It was over before they even swung their sabres. Obi is a Master and Maul was not ready

First was Obi Wan's form used during the Attack of the Clones through Revenge of the Sith era, including the Clone Wars where most of Obi Wan's fights with Maul occurred. It was the form Obi Wan started using after Qui-Gon died because he realized he needed something more defensive. Next came the form he used in A New Hope against Vader, showing his evolution since Revenge of the Sith, since A New Hope is going to happen in a few short years after this scene. Then finally he did Qui-Gon's pose, baiting Maul and defeating him in three perfect moves.

If you watch closely this was a psychological fight, Obi-Wan made the first stance causing Maul to make his. Then Obi-Wan switched to the stance Qui-Gon used when Maul killed him, which Maul noticed and and shifted his stance. Since Obi-Wan had to watch Qui-Gon die, he played it over and over in his mind to learn how to not lose a fight the same way. When the physical fight started, Obi-Wan learned from the past, while Maul thought it would play out the same.

Yep, Maul did want to die. In addition to that, the duel shows that Obi-Wan is at this point in the timeline so far beyond Maul's skills that it was never a contest. Maul was dead as soon as he deduced Obi-Wan was protecting someone important. Maul was caught up in his hatred of Obi-Wan and he was baited into trying to kill Obi-Wan the same way he killed Qui-Gon, while Obi-Wan doesn't even hate Maul and held him in his last moments just like he held Qui-Gon and Satine, who are not only two of the three people Obi-Wan loved the most in his life but were also both killed by Maul himself, and even answered his question about the Chosen One and presumably buried or burned his body after his death. Maul only had hatred, while Obi-Wan had compassion for even his worst enemy like the Jedi Master he is.

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed ปีที่แล้ว +1

Obi Wan witnessed that himself, he didn't need Qui-Gon to tell him what to do. Obi Wan spent every night since, thinking about that fight as he lay in bed. It's why he switched to Soresu before the Clone Wars, so he'd have more defense against a person like Maul. But Obi Wan is now a wise old master himself, and he recognized Maul for the broken animal he is, and knew exactly what to do to grant Maul a quick and merciful death. Obi Wan wasn't looking to have a fight, he was looking to put down a rabid dog that he pitied, and needed to put down because that rabid dog might be a threat to Luke. Sure for a moment there, Obi Wan fell back on old habits, going into his Soresu stance, then he switched to his A New Hope stance, but he saw Maul was really not prepared for anything Obi Wan could do, so he baited him into a foolish attack and finished him quick.

The fight is supposed to be anticlimatic. Its not a climax at all. Obi-Wan has risen about their old grievances, he is a true master now, he doesn't need this fight. Maul in the meanwhile is long past his prime, not merely physically because Obi-Wan is the same, but in the sense this isn't the high point of his action. He *already* avenged himself against Obi-Wan by killing Satine. Its Sidious he can't actually avenge himself against. He is an old man desperately trying to relive his glory days, but he has been sapped of his conviction and spirit. He's just desperate for some meaning, Hence Obi-Wan, who has surpassed his attachments, is able to use his master's old stance not as a homage for sentimental reasons, but a bluff. He told Maul straight out who Maul is in this scene and Maul hated being known better than he knows himself, but he was too angry to see what this means. Hence he practically salivated as he once did as a young man relishing in a victory not yet achieved, only this time it was in the idea of reliving the kill of Qui-Gon, and he goes straight for trying to take Obi-Wan out like he did Qui-Gon, because he *hasn't* let go.
And so blinded by the thought of this kill he rushed to attack a master of defense with the acrobatic flourish of a younger man, nothing held back, and, in a way, almost did a "suicide by cop". Because at the end of the day while there does not appear to have been any conscious thought of suicide, this whole affair was a futile, despairing, gesture of self-destruction being set against a firm and resolute clarity of purpose and conviction, an absolute imperative to protect. From Maul's point of view, they are both now exiled knights searching for a purpose, and that purpose might as well lead them to fight. The fight is the point and so he is single minded and reckless. But for Obi-Wan, Maul is the drifter who is lost, he is on watch, on a charge set from above, the clearest and most important and unambiguously *good* purpose he has ever been set to in his life. Remote yes, but a guardian, not an exile deprived of meaning. And so he weighs all things and uses the *appearance* of attachment to his master to achieve the true *purposes* of his master. For those who think the message of the movies is that the Jedi ideals of non-attachment are wrong, look here at this example of "if you honor what they fight for" (that often belittled line of Yoda's). Obi-Wan defeats Maul because he is a true Jedi. Maul loses because he had become a true Sith, for only a broken, defeated, purposeless Sith can be a true Sith, because Sith ideals call for standing on one's own power. The Sith delude themselves that their ability to dominate, threaten, possess other wills is the same as standing on their own power, all that really is is relying on the power of others. So here Maul has no minions and is utterly alone. Obi-Wan, however, is not. Because the Force is with him, for he serves the Force, and so it betrays Maul who tries to dominate the Force, the will of the Force sides with Obi-Wan and he has an easy victory for it.

    2. George Lucas in an interview confirmed in the end Anakin was always The Chosen One, he brings balance to the force when him and Palpatine die, it wasn't Luke who killed Palpatine it was Anakin and then Anakin died which in the end brought balance to the force.
