Here is something very interesting that you might have looked over: When Obi-Wan first ignites his blade, he takes the Alec Guinness stance. He then transitions to the episode III stance. He finally takes Qui-Gon’s stance. Maul notices and tries to kill him the same way he killed his master. Obi-wan did this intentionally because he knew Maul would do this. Maul used his blade to hit Qui -on in the face before the fatal blow. That is the move that Maul is doing when his saber is split in two.

Qbi-wan instituted specific training within the order to counter this attack style from Maul. He honed his skill for the entire length of the clone wars and became a true master where Maul became nothing more than a brute.

It is a battle of wits and growth and temprament more than with lightsabres. Obi-wan was more than ready to let it go and he didnt ignite his sabre before maul became a threat to Luke.
He starts with his defesive style but switches over to the style he had when tthey first met as a padawan luring maul into doing the same attack pattern as he did on Qui-Gon and then he springs his trap on him.

I also find Maul's death touching and sad. He really is a very tragic figure. He's spent his entire life being used and manipulated, governed by anger and hatred and fear. He's never had a single healthy or loving relationship in his life, never had a single true friend. Even his relationship with his "brother", as dysfunctional as it was, was ripped away from him. And in his last moments, as Obi-wan holds him (a beautiful display of compassion, IMO), his thoughts are still fixed on vengeance.
He was both powerful and perceptive (e.g. seeing Palpatine's true plan and TRYING to reveal it, piecing together Obi-wan's mission), and yet, having spent his entire life consumed with his need for revenge, he ultimately accomplished nothing and touched no one. There's definitely something very sad about that.

A beautifully crafted episode and an incredibly touching end to Mauls story… he finally found peace once the man he’s been seeking vengeance against for decades gave solitude to his broken soul…
Some people dislike how brief the final duel was, tho I on the other hand find it remarkable how symbolically it displays how much Obi has grown in solitude compared to Maul - stuck in endless cycles of pain and vengeance

Fun fact about this episode, the original written script for this episode was actually suppose to have Kanan be the one to accompany Ezra to Tattooine instead of Chopper but due to Freddie Prince Jr having health problems at that time, they had to rewrite the parts Kanan was going to be in and put Chopper in instead.
Personally I would have loved to have seen Kanan and Obi wan interact. Considering that the last time Kanan and Obi saw each other it was when Kanan was still a youngling whom gave Obi the idea to use the beacon to call their Jedi back home if it also could be used to send them away, the very thing that Obi did in ROTS when everything went to shit

If you really think about it, Maul never stood a chance, after all this years he was still the same, only caring about his vengeance, Obi wan left him behing a long time ago, he doesn't care a about those things, he has only one goal, to protect Luke, Maul sees a broken old man in hiding, he doesn't realize that he is facing a full fledged Jedi Master, on duty, protecting the most important place in the galaxy

  • @latech7671
    @latech7671 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Oke, I want to point something out that really shows how far Ezra has come.
He understood that Obi-Wan had a purpose and that purpose meant he couldn't join the fight or anybody knowing he was still alive, so he completely kept this a secret (like, as far as we know he didn't even tell the Ghost-Crew, including Kanan, who he usually tells everything).
Also, based on the fact that he came back with Mauls ship and only could say they would not see Maul again, he now looks like the person who took Maul down to everybody else which is wild. The whole Rebellion will see Ezra as the person who finished of Maul BUT instead of boasting about it like he would have done in previous seasons (even at the beginning of Season 3) he didn't even say he killed him. He just said "we won't be seeing Maul again" which isn't even a lie.
In addition this also tells us that Ezra had so much trust in Obi-Wan that he didn't question him being able to win against Maul one second.
The last part I am personally not sure about is the only other character who knows the truth: Chopper. I honestly think he would be loyal as a whole (especially if Ezra asked him not to talk about it) but I also do think he would never be untruthful to Hera and I think Ezra knows that. So, there is also a real possibility that Ezra actually wiped Choppers Database of this one interaction he had. I honestly think both versions are great:
In one Ezra trusts Chopper enough that he could hold such an important secret, even against Hera
In the other Ezra cares so much about Obi-Wan being kept a secret and removing his mistake of looking for him that he would even wipe a bit of Choppers Database which I think would be very hard for him to do.
Which version do you prefer (whoever read until this moment, if any). I really want to know.
I personally can't decide fully but I am (I think) actually leaning towards the second one where Ezra wipes this event from Choppers Database as I think this really shows that Ezra understands the importance of Obi-Wan and that he knows he messed up by looking for him and wants to correct that mistake
(Copied my comment from another reactor is anybody is confused 😉)

    • @TopnessReactions

obi wan's switch between his ANH to ROTS stance to qui-gon's was to pretty much bait maul into doing the move that had killed his master on purpose as he would have probably would have years to run in his head how to counter that.
I believe in the novelization of ROTS or in one of the comics it mentions that anakin does his jump over obi wan was because he through that since obi wan did it to maul he could do it to but obi was had always been thinking about ways how to counter it if that was to be done against him which is why he was able to counter it. he doesn't just study the way he won fights back then but also how his enemies did so he always think of how counter it if such a time comes when its needed.
Lucas has stated that anakin was the chosen one which he does manage his job a couple years later. However by this point Obi wan has pretty much as abandoned all hope in anakin and believes that luke is the one who will complete the prophecy as we see in ROTJ when he tries to dismay luke from trying to bring anakin back to the light when they talk on dagobah after yoda dies.

Something worth mentioning here. Maul doesn't really want revenge on Kenobi. He wants Palpatine dead but knows it's impossible. So he focuses on Kenobi, which is what he considers a goal to achieve.
Kenobi uses his master's position. Maul recognizes this and wants to kill Kenobi the same way he killed Qui-Gon. Here you can clearly see the difference Maul has learned nothing and has always been on the same level never learned from his failures. Kenobi, on the other hand, learned from everything. Kenobi didn't even want to fight - he knew that if it came to a confrontation, he would win. He only activates his lightsaber when Luke's life is in danger.
Maul doesn't guess that it's a trap that was supposed to provoke him and attacks. Kenobi wins by stabbing him in the heart.
Qui-Gon's last sentence to Maul perfectly sums up Maul during this fight
"You feel pain. And while your anger can be used to destroy others, your pain will become the ultimate weapon that will destroy you. Your desire to hurt others will not repair the harm you have suffered. You must understand that only you can decide your fate. Because when this weakness in the form of revenge will be your ultimate defeat, it will cut you deeper than any lightsaber could ever do."

My mind was blown by this episode. I had it on a loop, countless times, savoring each precious bit of it. Mind blowing was how cinematic it was, the homage to Kurosawa in the quick ending fight, surgical precision on the three moves, the look in Maul's face when he realized what had happened, the gentleness of Obi-Wan supporting the dying old adversary, the same who inflicted so deep wounds to his soul, his Master, Satine, and still he had definitely risen above all that. Mind blowing is how carefully this episode was animated, have you seen the little smoke rising from Maul's chest, to let us know the last blow not only cut his lightsaber but also his torso, vertically, this time? I've also seen someone pointing out how Maul raises his hand to almost touch Obi-Wan's shoulder, but never complete the action, who'd say what was in his mind in that flimsy moment...Mind blowing is how accurately they merged Ewan's and Sir Alec's Obi-Wan's face, a perfect mash. Maul asked if he was the Chosen One. For Obi-Wan, in that moment, Luke was. Anakin was lost, more machine than man. He will avenge us, said Maul, and I guess he was thinking of Savage but also all who had been victims of Sidious. Yeah, personally my mind was blown and Aunt Beru calling for Like at end got the nerdy me. Damn those french horns, can't hear them without tearing up, lol.

As to "The Chosen One" it's Kenobi believing Luke is the Chosen One- as he'd given up on Anakin.
Anakin is, at heart, still a selfish boy wanting a family more than a man doing what's right- it's why he could stand by as Alderan was destroyed but not his own son.
It's how Papaltine played him SO hard.
Luke and Leia were lucky- he got raised by great parents and became selfless by their examples. Owen, Bereu and the Organs don't get enough credit.

So topness i told you id fill you in a little on maul so here i am.
Maul was a sith, his motives were always aligned with the sith motives. Those being power, control, a few more but most importantly revenge.
Maul sees kenobi as the one who took his legs, but more than just his legs his ability to reach what he saw as his full potential. Slightly more than that, he knows who kenobi is as a person.
Kenobi is one who will sacrafice anything from himself but his morals for a better tomorrow. Who else would be protecting the last chance... his last chance at destroying the sith the jedi and bringing an end to an era the era of the force being polarized. We all cant help but feel some pity for maul, he wasnt a good person but one made by his situation who learned to accept it and embrace the anger he gained. While born aligned twords the dark side we have seen most fall to pure evil through love and what happens, not what they were born as. Star wars has no space for potential racism and never has, it was always individuals actions. Assaj is a good example of this, same with dooku or even ani.
Not much is clean cut, from the droids landing on tat to battle of endor, it is for luke leia han, for everyone else nothing was clean cut. Rebels had the next best shot of it and its still messy issues arise not everything goes to plan all the time and there isnt always a backup plan and luck only gets you so far, weve seen this by how we dont have snipps anymore.

Also to be clear about the timeline to help you, and answer one of your other questions/ observations.
This episode takes place during a new hope atleast the last scene and that takes place at the end of the episode (around the same time Ezra makes it home).
For the chosen one, old Ben and maul both have realized the old ways were delusional to a degree and they may have been wrong about who the chosen one was. In a sense luke is the one who brings balance, and so is Ani. They can't work alone they needed to work as a pair and do what each one does best.
For luke it was his willingness to stand for what he beleived in, for Ani it was his willingness to do what ever he needed to to protect those he loved. To old Ben though, he's old he's seen Ani falter and it doesn't look through his eyes or even maul eyes he was the chosen one since palps is the only one who won anything.
Since both don't see Ani as the chosen one, there is a spot for a new one. Old Ben doesn't fully know but he gives maul hope and ends maul cycle and gives himself the hope he needs to make the next steps aswell by exaggerating his knowledge of what is going on to even himself since they both have nothing but have risen above who they were when they started.

Luke and Anakin are family with a intertwined fate they may both be part of the Chosen One.

I love TCW, but I hate Rebels. Despite that this episode is top tier Star Wars content for me. Kenobi has slowly become my favorite Jedi. Watching this chapter in both his and Maul's lives come to an end is very satisfying considering how far back seeing them TPM was.
