Hope Sandoval’s collaborations with Massive Attack are gorgeous (“The Spoils” and “Paradise Circus” as well as their “Four Walls/Paradise Circus” collab with Burial).
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You: One of my favorites. A very special chilling and simplistic song with great instruments. For me this is not the best clip, but that's okay. R.I.P. David Roback
This would have to be in my top 10. Hope is known for being painfully shy and has always shunned the lime light. She is a bit of a recluse. But she has done collaborations with The Jesus and Mary chain and Massive attack. More of a Black pudding kind of sausage on a fry up. You know it's there quietly sitting on the edge and it's still there long after you've finished.
I like small doses of Mazzy Star. This was a great pick. It also made me think about tambourines. Drummers I’ve known are always griping about singers with tambourines or audience members grabbing the singer’s tambourine. Now we can really see that you shouldn’t even give a drummer or percussionist a tambourine. 😂
When I read the title of this video, I had no idea of who Mazzy Star was. Nor did I get a clue from your introduction about this song. But I love the tension this created. Mazzy Star ... never heard of them (or her). Until I heard the vocals come in; in about 10 words I had this song pegged. I have heard this song before, but I don't know anything about it, except that it is beautiful. Alex, you are right, very simple melody and guitar lines, and it's great that you picked up on her unusual vocal timing. It makes me wonder if she is a natural non-English speaker, or whether she is such a good vocalist? I am voting for her being a great vocalist from an English-speaking background. I mention this because, when you try to convert lyrics from another language you often run into problems with words. Some are longer, or shorter than in the original language. Sometimes they have different syllable emphasis, others have pronunciation differences. All of which need to be squeezed into suitable vocal lines to fit the melody of the song and time signatures. I wonder if this was originally a non-English song. Or is the vocalist from a non-English speaking background? If not, she is a very good singer as she mostly starts on time but bends out of time to fit the lyric in with the melody. It is beautiful. Alex, I see the broken bird reference.
So Tonight That I Might See and Among My Swan are the two albums I'd suggest having a listen to Len if you want to get lost in her voice and dream away. Hope is American and indeed a fragile soul, when I saw her live she left the stage for 20 minutes after someone, against requests, took flash photography of her performing. Still worth waiting for!
@@christhecurator Hey Chris, thank you for the suggestions. I will have to look into them. I wonder if Hope is from California. Sometimes Californians clip vowels and emphasize consonants, which forces starting a quarter in front or behind the beat (either as a style choice or by necessity). This creates a much more complex vocal dynamic, even when presented in an angelic, innocent style. In this song, I just want to give her a hug. It is beautiful, yet haunting.
An amazing song, I have seen all the videos and Hope is great in all of the performances of this. I like to listen to this song and then go more and more into the mellow stuff but it gradually builds up and gets louder. Like the song "you have to go somewhere" by Air Formation is a good next course after this. Cheers!
I like your intro just the way it is. It’s distinctive, professional, low budget yet high quality and it’s always very smiley. 😀 Some “Skippy the Bush Kangaroo” quotes or excerpts in the prologue to mix it up a bit occasionally might be fun. I felt like this song whilst well written and clever, was a bit of a fragile chicken soufflé sorta sausage, lol. 🤭
guys you don't need a new intro it is different it stands out from all the others I like the tada unlike most Americans will come in with the horrible and wildly over used "yo it's ya boi "
Mazzy Star aren't shoegaze, they're dream pop. They're like THE dream pop band, the one who's picture would be next to the term in the dictionary. Shoegaze and dream pop have compositional similarities and I consider them related genres but they aren't the same thing, dream pop is a lot more restrained in terms of musical complexity, it's slower and more deliberate, it's almost always lower tempo and not anywhere near as loud as shoegaze.
You have THE best intro of any reaction channel in my opinion. Coincidentally, my favourite Indian restaurant in Montreal is also called The Star of India, or "L'Étolie des Indes" in French, jaw dropping good curries and the best service anywhere. Looking forward to Kate Bush 2. Cool video here, she reminds me of Norah Jones, she even looks a bit like her.
I refer to it in my mind as the angsty female vocalist genre. Which is mostly what I listened to around the Enya Evanescence Mazzy Star Fiona Apple Sarah MacLachlan Jewel Golden Era. Or you could say the Ethereal female vocalist genre. Well Enya wasn't angsty, more like fairies and enchanted forest genre.
I like your intro the way it is. Please never develop a marketing department. I've watched a few reaction channels but never followed them chronologically like I do yours. Also: Note how many of the more "professional" channels react a month or 2 later to harder to find stuff you do. Great version of the song and I'd never seen the band before. She personifies the music she played so well.
The studio version is not 100% acoustic like this. It's much more atmospheric. They didn't go anywhere commercially, mainly because the label was trying to influence their music, and they wanted to do their own thing. They pleaded with them to get out of there contract, which succeeded. They don't have a bad song on any album, many songs are as good and better than this. Their music is a hidden gem ,for the finding, for anyone who looks beyond this one commercially successful song.
Pity to do this version as there’s great lead slide guitar on the recorded version. So this version doesn’t do it justice. The singer also teamed up with the drummer from My Bloody Valentine in the 2000’s to form ‘ Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions’.
Good morning this is a little off topic from the above video. I came across my old records from university that which were the musical background at school. Was wondering if there was a chance of doing a where are they now segment at some point. ie Uriah Heap, Humble Pie, Thin Lizzy, Nazareth, Them, Trogs, Zombies and Manfred Man. Little off topic but thought I'd throw them out there. Cheers
Hi Rick - alex here. Love all this, and yes we need to. You know how it goes, the threads lead you into another rabbit hole but all these need to be hit. Give us time. Take care - Alex
@@TheThamesmen no problem. This format allows me to enjoy the music of my life while introducing me to artists I would not think of listening to. Plus the banter between the two of you is fun to watch that keeps things fresh.
What makes this shoegaze? I’ve asked several people for a definition and gotten several answers. One said it’s because the musicians are always looking down because they’re working with so many pedals because it’s so complex. This was definitely not that. What defines it as a genre?
Originally as they were moody musicians staring at their shoes while being a repetitive but down beat wall of sound. Original bands were ones like Ride and slow dive. ( both Oxford bands my home town)
Yeah true shoegaze was definitely Thames valley, see also chapterhouse. Although inspiration and definitely godfather of shoegaze I would say is My Bloody Valentine
It's not. Mazzy Star is dream pop. They're like THE quintessential example of dream pop. Dream pop and shoegaze are related genres but they aren't the same, dream pop is a lot more restrained in terms of both musical complexity and decibel level.
Alex and George. A show which ran for a few of the most recent, and earlier years years was RocKwiz!!! It was hosted by a women who knew the business!! IE, The Australian music scene she was very funny. There were a lot of seasons and it was all live. I would not give you a bum steer on anything like this at the risk of making a dickhead of myself!! Look Up Rockwiz on TH-cam and go for the Best of Rockwiz and you will see some excellent Australian music, with the occasional new Zealanders including Linda and Vika and some overseas acts as well. It is worth a real good look and it probably has not been mentioned by anyone yet!! The house band is f&^%king good!!! ahhh.... thanks you!!
These lyrics best describes what if feels like to be an empath
Hope did a wonderful tune with Jesus & Mary Chain called Sometimes Always. One of my favourite duets.
OMG - Listening to it now as I type... EPIC. I adore JMC, and now this.... Wow. I will sub to your channel!! Thank Alex

Great reaction! I love Mazzy Star. Please react to the bands that Mazzy Star developed from: Opal and Rain Parade-great 80's Psychodelia!!
I loved that period also. Take care Alex

Hi guys, this was great. I love it. It brings back good memories
There's a doco on what happened to Mazzy Star
This whole album is fantastic.
I LOVE your intro! It's fab. Please keep it ;)
PS fellas, the band name is Mazz--y Star not Maze--y Star. Love your work ;)

Always go with the studio versions when reacting to unfamiliar songs. Has all the atmospherics intact.
True but was still amazing

Coming in on 3 just a soft acoustic easy song very easy cords and strumming calming song to easy!
It’s a vegan sausage. Pleasant enough and the first song you want your alarm to play but not one that gets you out of bed.

Hey lads, don't fuck with the intro or outro, they're the best bits.😁
Not sure what that says about the middle bit!😂
I remember buying the album this song was a part of on cd just because that song was so good; the rest of the album wasn't nearly as good, though.
