To put things into perspective, Loeb last full time competitive season before this was in 2012 and yet he still wins the rally. AMAZING, just AMAZING. Really shows what a talent Loeb was and still is
I come back to this video from time to time. This imo is one of the greatest WRC Rounds of all time. Loeb, after beeing semi retired for years, races a new car with a new navigator. He went second in the dakar Rally right before and had no prep Time too. Seeing him take the fight to Ogier and the Toyotas was epic.
Of course he is the GoAT. Perhaps the greatest racing driver of all time, period, not just the greatest rally driver. What he did in Monte Carlo this year, is the equivalent of Alain Prost coming out of retirement for one race in 2004 (after 10 years, and at 47, what a coincidence...), and beaten Michael Schumacher. In my opinion that would be an impossibility, but then again, Loeb is nothing short of a sacred monster; so cool, so humble and so focused. Now he should get back to Pikes Peak and recoup his record from that ridiculous electric water pistol from VW...

If there was ever any sliver of doubt as to Loeb's greatness, this rally erased it definitively. Winning with a new team in a new car, with a new co-driver, against Ogier who had the familiar team and co-driver (yes, new hybrid car), in such difficult and varied conditions was nothing short of unbelievable. Which makes me wonder if all the cars he drove, since he retired 10 years ago (!) were not sub-par, and now he finally got a fast car he won as he had always done while at Citroën.
For me, this will go down as one of the best WRC Rounds of all time. Seeing these two semi retired giants of rallying battle for the win in the new cars on such an iconic event was awesome!
Dude came from sleeping in desert for 3 weeks, had what 3 days off, jumped into the car he barely had tested and won. Not to mention he did it with new co-driver who doesn't have a lot of WRC experience. Full time drivers should be ashamed and have a proper look in the mirror.

Well, the other drivers were fighting their own cars instead of driving a rally. Also Loeb and Ogier seemed to have a good tests, Loeb also said that he got a lot of sleep at dakar, so he wasnt tired and Isabelle also did a great job. And with together 16 wins between the 2, it would ve been more surprising if they werent on the podium tbh.
I don't think any drivers have to be ashamed. Loeb is just incredibly good and I bet every one of those other drivers strive to be that good too. No need to call anybody out
Sebastien Loeb and Jim Clark were the two greatest race car drivers in history. Both of them had one similar characteristic besides being very fast; they were humble and unpretentious.
2022 brought two amazing surprises on the world of sports in regards to "old folks" giving us, grey haired dudes a sense of pride; Loeb winning the Monte Carlo WRC event age 47, and Kelly Slater winning the Pipeline WCT event age 50! And both events happened within days of each other!

I used to root against Loeb Back when he'd beat everyone so handily it seemed, but I'm so happy to see an Rally legend like Loeb take Monte Carlo yet again!
I will never understand how one can "root against" Loeb ... a generational talent like him you have to acknowledge and champions like that are usually dickheads (think Senna for example, or Lebron in another field).... but he has always been the most down to earth, sympathetic, humble champion of any sport a true class act. If I have to put rally drivers in top 3 1. Sebastien Loeb 2. Sebastien Ogier 3. Tommi Makinen These trios are the embodiment of completeness, fearless, finesse, and composed. They were all won in all surfaces in WRC (mud, dirt, gravel, snow, dry tarmac, wet tarmac, snowy tarmac etc.)

I was never a LOEB fan, and Ive witnesed his carrere since his first win in Deutschland 2002. So - once again - as not being his fan for a spectator/journalist - for me LOEB is the GOAT in Rallying.
He didn't have the pace once Ogier turned the wick up on Saturday, but he was always there or thereabouts. The puncture lost Ogier the rally as he had Loeb's measure. But Loeb was best of the rest, which is extraordinary for a driver who has not been a championship regular for almost a decade. He has skill, experience and class that came to the fore on the Monte and showed up all the championship regulars. Exceptional.

As in many other sports, it’s unending debate. The Greatest, who, why, this that. You can’t put an “official title” on who the greatest is in WRC. For me he is , and he may not be for someone else. But, what he’s achieved in his career is unthinkable. He’ll probably be winning Monte Carlo even if he comes back after 10 years! ❤
Loeb is that older guy who can look at us the new generation and say "Whats wrong with you guys". They don't make drivers like him anymore. This guy ate rally for breakfast lunch and dinner. But more than that he was driven in everything he did...he was a competent human being who applied himself. Look at him doing a freaking backflip. I could be his son and my back hurts just from looking at that. Our new generation surrounded by this comfort and technology wont ever get to that level of skill. This is not nostalgia of a better time, it is simple truth. I see it in every sport, and every second of the day. So appriciate those legends, because they are the last true warriors.
No disrespect sir but i believe you're wrong : like him or not as a person, a guy like Max Verstapen also ate motorsport "for breakfast lunch and dinner" has an outwordly level of skills, was born with wealth and is kind of a geek when it comes to tech, he can drive anything and i believe he deserves the warrior moniker ... unlike Loeb he's a total dickhead i give you that 😂 but that's not new gen stuff we had a lot of those in racing over the decades ... actually i believe overall the level of skills is better than ever in motorsport and by that i mean grids are much more consistant from one to last than they've ever been (except for rally maybe but that's more at the top end that the problem lies : it's just hard to find talents like Loeb and Ogier every gen and it's true the top guys right now either still need development like Kale or lack charisma : Neuville for example i should support (i'm french living in belgium) but he's kind of hard to root for ... I felt the same about Ogier) It's especially obvious in endurance racing imho : the field never been that good from top to bottom in gt racing.

Ogier was faster tho, he was about 20 seconds ahead before the puncture. Then he lost 30 seconds, and had a 9 or 10 seconds deficit before the final stage if I'm not mistaken. Without his jump-start, he would have finished just behind Loeb because he gained back 9 seconds on the final stage

Are you serious ? Did you watch the rally. Ogier was 24 seconds after the SS15, he had a puncture in SS16 and Loeb took the lead after that. In the Powerstage, Ogier was 9 seconds faster than Loeb. Just luck for Loeb because otherwise he would have been humiliated by the real goat of WRC : Sébastien Ogier
47 years of age and doing a standing backflip...that is athleticism that is just off the fucking charts. My guess is theres not 100 humans on Earth that could do that at 47 years of age. Oh yeah and he did a stunning job on the rally (luckless Oiger was actually winning it on the stages though), but then Loeb is the greatest driver of all time.
Seb lien has always been my pick but I have always respected Ocier he too is a champion. Yes he ended up with a flat that cost him the race. Gotta ask. Where were the rest of the guys?

Loeb put Ogier under pressure so Ogier made a mistake a had a puncture. It was all mental pressure and Ogier lost the battle.
