Love the electric guitar, lyrics, and of course Ray's voice. Hope he sprinkled in a few blues/folk/acoustic heart-breakers into his new album. "Be careful of each step you take. Hey, no pressure." Love it.
Some of us (are perhaps raised to) have an impression that an artist is making music for us. Music isn't a "customer is always right" business, it's an art. I'm glad Ray is changing things, I'd hate to see him in an endless rut the likes of an Everclear or Offspring. What he did in 2004 can only be charming so many times before it's just formulaic. If you don't get sucked into your own prejudices, you can hear the same old Ray LaMontagne with all of his talents in this release, and I think it will be his best since Gossip. I'm even optimistic it might be better.
Artfully coaxed the words right out of me mouth. It is RAY'S art and should be respected as such, whether or not it resonates with your own self. Personally, I don't mind, and rather enjoy, being Ray's musical and artistic bitch, regardless of his chosen direction...
For those of you saying you miss the stripped down sound of "Trouble:" I understand where you are coming from, but Trouble was released in 2004 - over 11 years ago now. Are you still the same person you were in 2004? Are you still consuming the same media you were in 2004? Or have you grown and expanded your horizons? Have you discovered new songs, artists, television shows, movies, etc.? Mr. LaMontagne isn't the same person he was in 2004 either. He's developed as an artist, and he's discovered another side of his musical repertoire that he's exploring. Supernova and this newest song may not be your cup of tea, but don't pressure an artist to get back to an earlier sound if he's not interested in doing so right now. Pull out those previous albums and spin them to your heart's content, but let the man make the kind of music that he wants to make. Some of you are saying that he's gone "commercial" while others are lamenting the fact that he's not still making "Trouble" 11 years later. That's two sides of the same coin. "Trouble" was a bona fide commercial hit, and to stay with the same sound after 11 years would be my definition of "going commercial." The fact that Mr. LaMontagne is continuing to put out new music and is exploring new sounds and textures in his music is exciting. I can't wait to see what he comes out with next. I think we can all agree that there's something in his catalog for everyone, and let's find what we like, put it on, and turn it up loud.
+Matt Sands I agree with you, but I feel like there is a middle ground between Trouble and full-out distortion sound... I thought "God Willin' & the Creek" was a great album and still a departure/expansion from Trouble/Jolene. I saw Ray last year and can honestly say that for ME, his music/voice/etc. did not work as well with the full band (especially the full drum kit). To each his own, and of course Ray is the artist and artists explore, but I also understand why people long for the more traditional sound.
+Chris Eden Oh, I totally understand it, too. Absolutely. "God Willin..." is still my favorite album from Ray, but I'm also very much into psychedelic music so "Supernova" was right in my wheelhouse. I completely understand that this particular style is not suited to everyone's taste. I was really excited to see him announce this new album and premiere this new song, but then it was a massive buzzkill to read through the comments. That's really what made me write my above comment. I don't fault anyone for not getting into this sound, but I hope they respect Ray's decision to go in this direction. And if anything, it's a good excuse to pull out his earlier albums again.
+Matt Sands It seems like he didn't really grow tho... just complicated himself and covered it up with more layers of unnecessary stuff. It looks like growth, but it wasn't the kind of growth where I could grow with him.
Ray always puts out great music. This song is especially chill. I love his soft vocals and the rad guitar-playing in the background-- I'll listen to anything by this guy, no reserves.
You guys are bugging. This song is what we call, "Baby making music' because of the vibe. his voice is like butter. Who cares if he switches his style up. He wants to evolve whether you are feeling it or not. I love his voice.
Thank you. I think all supremely talented artists want to challenge themselves. Who wants to hear the same song over and over? Ray always has his own stamp of heart and soul in each song. I'm into it and find it to be sexy as hell.
Ray has released his inner Floyd for sure. Ouroboros is a masterful album. Unusual for an artist of Ray's reputation to display such a strong grasp of '60s British psychedelia, but here it is in all its glory. Love it!
This tends to happen as artists get more support and production increases on their work. I don't want thing to stay the same, but this doesn't do it for me. Maybe it will in 11 years when I come back to check it out again. That happens a lot.
The evolution of an artist is beautiful. And though this song is different than the old stuff, it is exquisite. An artist who never grows is boring, I look forward to experiencing something new and so should you. All hail Ray!
I love that he's moving around genres. You can only do one thing for so long. The music will evolve, just like the performer. His last tour must have been hell, kind of like when Dylan went electric (not comparing him to Dylan, just the situation). But as Ray evolves, the music can only get better. Can't wait to hear you on the road with My Morning Jacket, Ray! Peace!
NOW, this is a surprise. I didn't think he had it in him, but boy, he has it! WOW. Loving this as much as Troubles! The many shades one carries inside....
This song and the other new one, In My Own Way.... f'ing great music full of chill vibes. Can't wait to hear the whole album and see the tour with My Morning Jacket. I feel like this is a natural progression from Supernova but with more life to it. Hope all of the old fans realize how good this stuff is soon and just take it for what it is - you'll be happier with Ray for it. I got into him during the Gossip and the Grain album and saw him on that tour. It was amazing, especially Jolene acoustic to close. Memories like that are great because they can't be recreated. If you do see the same thing again, like I have on later tours, it's not as exciting. How do you think he feels then to do the same type of thing every time? People who commented on here should google for some of his recent interviews. It gives a good indication of where his head is at.
I hate to see you breaking down (hey, no pressure) I hate to watch you fall apart (hey, no pressure) I want to help you through it all (hey, no pressure, hey, no pressure) I want to lift you when you fall (hey, no pressure, hey, no pressure) Anything you want your life to mean it can mean Anything you want your life to mean it can mean This life is full of give and take (hey, no pressure) Be careful of each step you take (hey, no pressure) It doesn't matter lose or win (hey, no pressure, hey, no pressure) It's all an illusion in the end (hey, no pressure, hey, no pressure) Anything you want to be you can be Anything you want to be you can be Anything you want your life to mean it can mean Anything you want your life to mean it can mean I hate to see you crumbling (hey, no pressure) You need to know we are your friends (hey, no pressure) This life is full of give and take (hey, no pressure, hey, no pressure) Be careful of the choice you make (hey, no pressure, hey, no pressure) Anything you want your life to mean it can mean Anything you want your life to mean Anything you want to be you can be Anything you want to be you can be Hey, no pressure
Best Album of 2016 so far by a wide margin...Ray knocks it out of the park with this full album immersion of aural sculpture...simply put, a must have album for your collection. Superb in all phases.
My Boy Ray is ALWAYS on the edge of Spectacular with his songwriting! He is diving a liottle deeper into the studio and I for one love it......anyone with good ears would fell the same.....guitars are a little week>>>>>> Let me at that and Daddy will tear it down to the floor!!!! Go Go Ray!!!
Walked in to a record shop today and they were playing this song. Sounded awesome so bought the album on vinyl. I no nothing about Ray Lamontagne but I will definitely be checking out his work.
Saw Ray @ Fox in Atlanta last weekend. He played 4 of his old songs at the beginning. The rest was all new...with MMJ. One of the best shows, that I've ever been to, period. I only knew one song from the new album before I went. Saw a lot of people walk out/drunk out b/c they didn't know how to react to unfamiliar music. If you don't know what good, new music sounds like when you hear it/see it, then maybe you should keep holding on to your idea of good music...for your sake.
I love Ray. His old and new is great. The difference is that this is something I throw on while cruising around, or hanging out with friends. This older stuff was something that made you feel and connect with. Im seeing him at a music festival this summer, hopefully he plays some classics too!
if people want the old ray...he would have been dead long ago. He experienced much heartache and issues with drug addiction. All of his music should be felt...but we shouldn't make him suffer anymore and we should feel his music and what he was able to create for us ...good times and bad.
I can't understand for the life of me people say " I can't get into his new stuff. I like the old Ray ". He's going to whole as a artist. I love the new album. I saw this tour last summer and was blown away by him and the my morning jacket boys. people evolve and so does his music.
Ray is one of my most influential artists. I love his old stuff, and I love his new stuff. The riff on this song is killer and super rock n roll (very Black Keys) Ray is music genius. Even live, he blows away almost everything else coming out these days. Long live the man!
What a riff. Jeez, so the guy is exploring genres...stop having a cow you whiners. Dude is a talented musician and can write and recognize sweet hooks. I say BRAVO!
I love Trouble and Till the sun turns black. Those albums are legend. I am digging this song and hoping this album is equally as great. Its got its own vibe. Its still Ray, he is just keeping current.
I am soooo loving this song, it is hypnotizing. Your music is Awesome!!!!!!!! Looking forward to the CD release and cant wait for the June 16th show at Thompsons Point Portland Maine.
I wasn't too crazy about Supernova myself. It just didn't hit me like all his previous stuff, including the pre-trouble demos. But for me, this song does. Big time. Yes it's still far different than older acoustic Ray, but this song rocks people! Great tune, lyrics, vibe and catchy as hell in a trippy kind of way. If the rest of the album is this good, I'll be thrilled. I'm sure Ray will make another stripped down album someday, but let him do his thing. He's an artist, he HAS to do his thing. And he's doing well with this song.
It is true that this doesn't get to the rest of albums level but i must say this is quite good and fresh! super interesting, we will see how it comes...
From my point of view, the first time I heard of and got into Ray's music was 'Supernova'. If it wasn't for that record, I might not have bothered really. 'Supernova' was a sonic delight that you don't hear too often in today's records. I dig this song as it somewhat follows a similar sound from 'Supernova', but has a bit more of a Hendrix vibe to it. I don't see how he's become too commercial, if anything, he's mixed it up, and made things more interesting. Good job on this song, Ray. I can't wait for the new record!
he's been wanting to do this for years! he's now at the point in his career where he tells the record label what he wants to do instead of the other way around. I love it when artist experiment and reinvent their sound.
Thank you for posting this tonite! I've been having Ray DT's...I hope you put out more song soon...I pretty much just love all of your music no matter what...I just think your awesome! Looking forward to the new album when it comes out!
The reason people can't handle Ray changing his sound is basically this : Ray is the BEST singer/songwriter we've ever heard. Ray performing music in this new hipster alternative psychedelic rock genre is not the best use of his talents. It's the musical equivalent of when Micheal Jordan left the NBA in his prime as the greatest basketball player of all time to be AVERAGE at baseball. His concert on the Supernova tour was unbearable...listening to the entire audience complain the whole time was sad for those of us that love his music so much. Please bring back the Pariah Dogs for the next record. We love you Ray.
I'm not a huge Ray LaMontagne fan. The early stuff that some of my friends like leaves me a bit cold, though he is without a doubt a good singer, and he came up from nothing. But I do like this. Not sure it's a song for the ages, but it's catchy as hell.
What an amazing amazing song ..and I am writing it just after listening to the intro melody.. what a change from the earlier songs..come to India please
This is so wonderful. Sure, it's not "Trouble" or my personal favorite- "Till' The Sun Turns Black", but damn it's amazing. If you haven't already, I encourage you to go read his brief passage Ray has written to accompany this record on his website. It has not necessarily changed the way I hear the record, but I think it has broadened it to an extent. I see a lot of people miss the "raw" and "trueness" in Ray's older writing. I miss it too. But I can say I know that I don't listen to the same thing I did 10 years ago; I don't think we can expect him to write the same thing for that long either. I'm sure he's constantly changing just like really anyone would. I really like where this is all going and will continue to "follow him" on the journey. He is, in my eyes, one of the most versatile writers out there and I completely admire that. I can't wait to take this all in in person this September in Salt Lake City. Keep making beautiful music, Ray!
Heard this on the old radio at loved it straight away-refreshing to hear something different than the bland manufactured cheesy pop shite that's churned out relentlessly these days
Hey guys, Ray is expanding. Jim James from My Morning Jacket, another awesome group is a key figure here and these guys are just playing music. It certainly wont be for the radio friendly pop seekers out there but persistence conquers resistance. I have all his albums and really applaud this in the musical times we now live in. I wont go into in-depth reviews and my own opinions on the tracks but hell, long live the artists turn to put out what they want to instead of corporate demands. He has stated in interviews that his label was very reluctant to do this but he insisted and thank god. I'm not totally sold on water bottles and bad caps/ beer coolers being available on his website, seeing as he does disdain the press and commercialism but I guess his manager sees an opportunity to cash up! Personally and that's all it is, I find it hypocritical and a little cheesy. Still, I do rate the man. Well done. Old school new sounds that the real world will hear.
Sean, I'm with you. He put a song out for that movie, "The Fault in our Stars", and like the song and movie or not, at least the song was reminiscent of his older stuff. I love Ray's old stuff, and I want to like the newer stuff, but dang, I'm struggling to.
I own everything Ray has created for the public, including ouroboros. I loved the folky sound of everything prior to ouroboros. it's just too trippy, pink floydesque for me. even Supernova had a retro sound but he incorporated his earlier sound. I was planning on tickets to his concert in Salt Lake City but I'm afraid I'll have to pay to sit and listen to Ouroboros
Love the electric guitar, lyrics, and of course Ray's voice. Hope he sprinkled in a few blues/folk/acoustic heart-breakers into his new album.
"Be careful of each step you take. Hey, no pressure." Love it.
people are really hating on this??? wtf, this is amazing

I haven't been enthused with all his albums but he has more than earned my attention to them and my faith in future albums.
Ray Lamontagne seems to be on a Vision Quest.. If you can't respect that then I can't help you. He's an artist he don't look back.
Well said.
+bryancherryexplosion That is one thing people do not understand. Ray has always been great at creating a different vibe in his albums
+Jonathan Reeves I'm with you
Agreed! When Till the Sun Turns Back came out, knew he was going on a path, very different album from Trouble!
For those of you saying you miss the stripped down sound of "Trouble:" I understand where you are coming from, but Trouble was released in 2004 - over 11 years ago now. +Matt Sands i like the way you think matt.
Ray always puts out great music. This song is especially chill. I love his soft vocals and the rad guitar-playing in the background-- I'll listen to anything by this guy, no reserves.
Good lord. How is this man so talented? HOW?
+uberkatja He likes what he does???????

🎶Anal pressure 🎵
You can feel Jim's influence all through this. So happy they've worked together!
100%, Jim is allllll over this. it's incredible. Jim's mastery of sonic space in production is unrivaled
One helluva song. Instant addiction. Love the guitar work. Vocals, harmonies, lyrics. DAMN!
Ray has released his inner Floyd for sure. Ouroboros is a masterful album. Unusual for an artist of Ray's reputation to display such a strong grasp of '60s British psychedelia, but here it is in all its glory. Love it!

The instrumentals reminds me of Led Zeppelin, In the Light. LOL. Great Song!!!! Yeah Ray!!!!
❤❤😂 2:06
The evolution of an artist is beautiful. And though this song is different than the old stuff, it is exquisite. An artist who never grows is boring, I look forward to experiencing something new and so should you. All hail Ray!
Great song.

What a beautiful song about compassion.
That riff is killer!
What an addictive riff :D
I hear black keys

LOVE LOVE LOVE.
This blew my mind! It was the last thing I expected from Ray LaMontagne, but I love it!! I like the electric, and fuzzy distortion. Damn good!
Best Album of 2016 so far by a wide margin...Ray knocks it out of the park with this full album immersion of aural sculpture...simply put, a must have album for your collection. Superb in all phases.
This collaboration with My Morning Jacket is going to be dug up by future generations and worshipped reverently by all beings 👽
My wife always runs off when i blast this song because she knows it's baby makin' time!

this song is simply perfect
Great song.....I love Ray.
I love the new sound. I have great respect for artists that put themselves out there and invite us along as they grow.

He never ceases to amaze.
Fonky. Dayum. Klaus-esque bass. 70stastic!
My Friend. Ray LaMontagne I love everything that comes out of that beautiful voice!
I can't understand for the life of me people say " I can't get into his new stuff. I like the old Ray ". He's going to whole as a artist. I love the new album. I saw this tour last summer and was blown away by him and the my morning jacket boys. people evolve and so does his music.

I love Trouble and Till the sun turns black. Those albums are legend. I am digging this song and hoping this album is equally as great. Its got its own vibe. Its still Ray, he is just keeping current.
His backing vocals on this one sound like Cat Power/ Chan Marshall to my ears. I love it.
I am soooo loving this song, it is hypnotizing. Your music is Awesome!!!!!!!! Looking forward to the CD release and cant wait for the June 16th show at Thompsons Point Portland Maine.
Finally, the return of BIG Guitar. Fuck. Yeah. Turn it UP
I love love this song....and the words are so true!
the man is a true artist...not bound be convention...let him explore and appreciate his endeavors!...
I wasn't too crazy about Supernova myself. It just didn't hit me like all his previous stuff, including the pre-trouble demos. But for me, this song does. Big time. Ray LaMontagne's new album is pure progressive rock. Love it!!!
Heard of of him awhile ago, listened an inteview on a radio on way back home at 3 AM, end up here. Will go on a show in summerrrrr
he's been wanting to do this for years! he's now at the point in his career where he tells the record label what he wants to do instead of the other way around. I love it when artist experiment and reinvent their sound.
Love this tune !!
Such an amazing and beautiful song
What is everyone complaining about? Still a badass track. I think it's refreshing to hear him be successful in another lane.
anything you want your life to mean, it can mean....
His vocals against this heavier-sounding music though is great. I kind of love the contrast.
Thank you for posting this tonite! I've been having Ray DT's...I hope you put out more song soon...I pretty much just love all of your music no matter what...I just think your awesome! Looking forward to the new album when it comes out!
This is really good! It swings so i loose my seeing! I really like all of Mr LaMonagnes old stuff but this is really GOOD! Thank you Ray, Keep it up.
Love this!! Puts you in a real chilled Mood!! :) Sweet!
The reason people can't handle Ray changing his sound is basically this :
Ray is the BEST singer/songwriter we've ever heard.
Jon Lamanna free your mind, and you will no longer be blind to art.
I discovered Ray lamontagne through this song, it's amazing how he play several styles. love it
Loving this song!! I know he's gone away a bit from what he's originally known for but I'm enjoying the ride.
what a nice evolution, can't get enough of ray
He is a changing man. Respect that!
just amazing as been a fan for a long time get on ray rock out
This is intoxicating. I love it.
I'm excited to hear the new album. pre-ordered the vinyl and concert tickets.
Wonderful piece of music. Vocal delivery coincides perfectly with the lyrics. Keep it going!
So so good Ray! Look forward to the concert in September!
I saw him two days ago in Nashville. It was incredible!!!
New Ray LaMontagne!!! Fucking YEAH
I'm not a huge Ray LaMontagne fan. The early stuff that some of my friends like leaves me a bit cold, though he is without a doubt a good singer, and he came up from nothing. But I do like this. Not sure it's a song for the ages, but it's catchy as hell.
One of the best songs I've ever heard...up there with the greats.
What an amazing amazing song ..and I am writing it just after listening to the intro melody.. what a change from the earlier songs..come to India please
This song is soo good. A throwback to the 70's, and it makes me wanna drive fast!
Old school, nice psychedelic touch, reminds me of old times.....
Yay! Ray's back. 😆
Are there any other songs of him that are energetic like this one ?
Thanks :)
Is it just me or does the chorus sound very pink floyd-esque?
I saw Ray last night live at Ruth Eckerd Hall and that is exactly what I was thinking the entire time.
exactly!
I feel like he is a fusion of Pink Floyd and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Air
This whole record is very reminiscent of Pink Floyd. Which is my favorite group and would explain why I really love this record.
Ouroboros - My Morning Jacket and LaMontagne's fuzzy, psychedelic wanderlust.
Rays back!!!!
wow. great sound!! my new favorite song at the moment!!
