The older 1510 DOES have the handle on top, along with the handle that extends. After becoming aware of the 1535 - I did a close comparison. While there are some fractional differences in dimensions, overall volume is same - limited by airline carry-on regulations.
The ONLY real difference is in the weight of the case - and it is a significant 4.9 pounds lighter. Most countries and airlines don't weigh carry-on luggage, so it's not as big of a deal. That said, in some countries, some airlines weigh carry-ons. In truth, if you have either of the cases loaded with camera gear, you're going to have trouble passing. Heavy backpacks, in my experience, as a carry-on is an easier sell, especially if you are on the lighter side of body weight.
Either case is great for m43 shooters. I can get nearly my whole kit in one case, at least until I'm able to add the 150-400 to my kit. That is huge and convenient, and it provides a lockable vault for my room when I'm in another place.
The top insert is worth it's weight in gold for the convenience and organizing capability it provides. I've had the Pelican 1510 for over a decade and it's been all over the world and is solid now as when it came out of the box. Now it holds nearly all my gear, instead of just the 300mm f/2.8 and the insert contents, etc.
    Long live m34!
Edit: I will likely get the 1535 at some point, just the empty case, and transfer all the padding, dividers, and insert from my 1510 - for the weight savings.

Interesting you've found it easier to travel with heavier backpacks - something to consider - thanks for sharing!

@@MattSuessPhoto Think Tank makes some backpacks designed to fit under seats, and I've been known to have them weigh as much as 45-50 pounds - but they still fit just fine under most airline seats. I'm a relatively light guy (145) and it's common for most to be 30-50 pounds heavier - without their gear - so I've travelled that way several trips over the years. Think Tank also makes carry-ons designed to be the correct size, but optimized for photo gear protection. I would typically travel with the 600mm f/4 plus most of the rest of the gear in the carry-on and the 300mm f/2.8 and rest of the gear in the backpack - tripod in checked bag, etc. On regional flights that are picky about carry-on weight the old trusty photo vest is an easy out for dividing the weight. I've only ever had to use it once - because I weigh not much and that airline was smart enough to weigh person with their carry-on bag - not just the carry-on bag.
