  • Custom built unequal length A-Arms take some time. Is it worth the effort to build your own? this video answers the question while we step through weld fabricating a set of Upper A-Arms.

    The fact that you design and build your own control arms is absolutely amazing to me. I wouldn't have even thought about doing that. Just getting the correct attachment locations for factory control arms was difficult for me... Amazing work!

    It's fun watching your choices of what goes into a supercar project. I never heard you use the term "mild steel" and I think it may be because it's not a popular option today with all the exotic materials available but mild steel is strong, very strong. Your upper A arm could easily handle being used on a truck. Your suspension joints are extremely conventional too but also very strong, reliable, economical and easily available. I'm sure people have suggested heim joints as they are common on race cars. They are light and have lower compliance which results in more accurate motion and feedback but for street use leave a lot to be desired. I admire what Honda did on the original NSX using firm bushings on compliant mounts, no one to my knowledge had duplicated that.
    I like your inboard suspension too and can't wait to see how you put it all together. I've driven purpose built race cars and I've modified street cars into road race cars. There is a point in modifying a car where you just can't put it on the street anymore. It used to be if you could hear your exhaust note modulating off buildings as you pass them you were too loud. Then if you had to slow down so much to cross a bump in the road or RR track that cars behind honked you weren't a street car anymore. Here's one you'll like, when you can't safely park in a parking lot because your full race limited slip locks up and you need to apply enough torque to hop a tire to move.
    Engineering is just deciding which trade offs you can live with. I hope your work inspires others to follow their dreams whatever that may be.

    A QUESTION if you would,
    When powder coating, where it hangs, isn't there a part left uncovered by the powder where the hook/ground wire is and how do you deal with that? Just a second coating??

    • @BuilderCreator
      @BuilderCreator  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most parts have some place were you do not want or need a coating. Usually threaded holes, or in my case the ball joint socket. If I have a "clean" part I will often use VERY pointed stands that the part sits on (usually on the back side, or most indiscriminate side.)

    I really enjoy your work Jay, it is the embodiment of the creative engineering process. I designed and fabricated a novel rear suspension for a motorcycle and was lucky enough to only have to swap out the shock and spring for a heavier sprung item. As I am not a tech guy so I built a full size 2D mock-up of the system out of cardboard and was able to verify the geometry within the parameters of the bike's dimensions and the systems functional requirements.
    Your point about creating from your own mind's eye and not making a replica is absolutely vital and necessary. In so many creative areas people follow what has been done before or what has inspired them by copying. Be it cars, fan books, fan films, etc. and they have all lost the opportunity to share what is unique and personal about them with the world. Best regards, brother, I am traveling up to Portland from California to deliver some items for a family member. It'd be neat to meet you in person, but it is short notice.

    They look great! I highly recommend using a jig to set the pivot points and where the ball joint is in relation to each other. The angles and distances will be way off. You’ll find out when you get to drive it but hopefully you’ll reconsider before getting that far down the road.

    • @BuilderCreator
      @BuilderCreator  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would bet that the waterjet accuracy is so close that with the ball joint ring lining things up on one end and the pockets on the other end lining up the bushing end the rod ends below can adjust for any discrepancies. However, as the video pointed out everything is experimental, even alignment jigs.

      Sometimes people want things to be more complicated and re-invent the wheel . . . or at least re-invent the wheel suspension. Ha!

  • @zAvAvAz
    @zAvAvAz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Why not use 'ball joint eliminators'? Using a ball joint eliminator kit would negate need to replace dangerous ball joints after worn down. The eliminator requires replacement although at a much later time than a standard ball joint. Ball joints coming apart are dangerous and can send a wheel flying if you are unaware of their condition. Oh well. Just love this car stuff is all.

    All I would say to the naysayers is that even if you look at vehicles on the road, even they aren't beyond failure.
    I used to work for Ford the amount of recalls we did for various failed parts.

    • @BuilderCreator
      @BuilderCreator  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ford- that's a lot of cars out there that could have a faulty part, but again a lot of engineers and QC people to keep it right. One man one car- The odds just increased in my favor. Thanks for the message.

    Urethane bushings will not give, will not isolate noise and vibration, usually a disaster for street car!

    • @BuilderCreator
      @BuilderCreator  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are different densities of urethane. We have chosen slightly to the denser (performance) side, but should also have some decent "street car" isolation.

    I appreciate that you are going to such lengths to build custom parts! But, I fall into the category of folks using a donor car as I love to design/sketch but not much else. That said, a warning to others like me: It still takes longer than you think! lol. I built a full custom targa/hardtop for my NB Miata a couple years ago and never even installed it. Then, earlier this year I hit two pretty large deer in the front driver side. At that point it needed a whole front clip replacement. I figured, "gimme a month of weekends and I'll knock a rough one out." It's a daily/backroad beater so it doesn't need to be perfect. Fast forward 6 months of weekends and I'm nearly done! lol. 6 x the time and 3 x the cost! But, now the only non custom fiberglass parts are the doors and windows! A lot of fun. But, I'm starting to understand what you've gotten into!

    • @BuilderCreator
