He went to every Hillsborough funeral, has backed them the whole way and even told the Sun to fuck off when they asked him how to make the relations between them and Liverpool better. I visited the inquest in Sheffield but more importantly spoke to a friend who was there for most of the hearings. Mr Justice Popplewell appeared very kind to the bereaved and / or witnesses who were distraught as they gave their evidence. He said 'we can have a break' 'have a sip of water.' But every legal request from the police barrister was acceded to and every legal point / request from the supporters lawyers was denied. It even got to the stage where the police barrister looked embarrassed in what he was getting away with … especially the arbitrary cut off point in which he refused to look at evidence beyond that time.
