    I am glad you have raised the point about this type of tuner. Mechanically, it makes no sense to bend a string, wound or plain, thru a right angle, and then apply considerable strain on it to tune up to pitch. The right angle causes unusually high stress on the part of the string inside the tuner tube, and frequent failures are the result. Imaging trying to play a gig with your guitar tech repeatedly having to replace strings, but to see them fail before the string was even up to pitch? The manufacturers of these are not engineers, or they would have at lease change the sharp right angle entry point of the string to a smooth radius, like a trumpet mouth.

      I hear you. I commend them for trying something out of the box, innovation is what keeps moving the ball forward. But they need to work out the kinks and make them more reliable. I'm sure other people have had fantastic results with these tuners, just not me.

    Wish I had seem this before I bought a set , which is why I’m on TH-cam looking to see if anyone else has had this problem.
    Yeah exactly same problem I’m having

      Sorry to hear that! Try contacting them for a refund...took a while for them to get back to me, but they ended up refunding my entire purchase price, shipping, and return shipping.

      Well I’m a retired tool and die maker, so I took it all apart and believe I found some manufacturing problems. I needed the low entry point for my use.
      The #6-40 threaded set screw hole is drilled too deep creating a sharp surface opposite the string entrance hole and the set screw is made to a point.
      The set screw should be brass and flat on end and no drill point entry on opposite side. I will fix it.

    I ordered a set of Riot Tuners and it was a disaster. I ended up returning them. I loosened the set screw just because I wanted to see how they operated before I put them into a Firebird I had. When I went to tighten up the set screw it was already stripped, from me loosening it ONE time. They did grant my request for a refund once they received them back. The fact they refunded the purchase fairly easily is really the only good thing I can say about any part of the process involving my experience with Riot Tuners. I was looking for a lighter tuner than the Klusen banjo tuners to alleviate neck dive. I would take neck dive over those tuners any day. The only reason I tried the Riot Tuners was because Steinbergers were out of stock everywhere. Gibson has the Steinbergers in stock now so I would just recommend everyone ordering them if they're looking for this type of tuner.

    This is useful for me. I have an old Yugoslavian guitar with a Gibson style head-stock and a Bigsby style vibrato unit. I'm trying to convert it the straight pull through the nut for tuning stability. I've plugged the original head-stock holes and I'm going to drill them out in new locations. Looks like I should go with the Steinberger Tuners based on this.

    I enjoy my Steinberger tuners, they work extremely well, the wound strings never slip, the lighter plain strings can slip if you don't tighten it enough, but you don't need a wrench for a set screw. And just to say encourage a little bit more confidence, in my experience with the Steinberger tuners I have never broken a string no matter how old the strings are.
    I was interested in the riot works tuners because of the design is a little more streamlined aesthetically and seemingly would think more sustain. The Steinbergers do have effect the acoustic tone when not plugged in to my ears, but that slight less resonance doesn't show up amplified.

  • @AnthonyEssaye
    @AnthonyEssaye 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I cannot find the steinbergers anywhere and my firebird desperately needs new tuners. Are you sure on this set you didn't over tighten the lock and I think we shouldn't cut the string before tuning up the first few times. Any ideas about this?

  • @randyhusar4364

    I have a set on my Wolfgang. I noticed on the heavier gauge/wound strings, E,A,D. I would run out of travel on the adjuster. I would have to really stretch strings, adjust tuner to lowest setting, re-grip string again. These tuners have a travel limit. Traditional tuners keep winding string round, and round. I personally think the radius diving into the tuner opening is too tight. Especially on the G, B, E strings. I break the high E string just trying to tune!!
    I think I'll be putting on traditional tuners.

      I did eventually hear back from them and they did let me return the tuners for a full refund. Its a cool concept, and I hope they can improve their design to make it functional. Thanks for watching!

    It would be interesting to know how the string is held in a Steinberger tuner. Is it another set screw arrangement - but one that works reliably - or something else? I'll see if I can find that out from Steinberger or elsewhere

    • @BerscakCustomGuitars
      @BerscakCustomGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are no set screws with the Steinbergers. The knob on the top is what holds the string in place. The adjusters on the back lower the mechanism down to create tension. There are some really good videos on TH-cam that explain how they work. No tools needed.

    Did you check the set screws to see if they were sharp? I’ve seen a few reviews that didn’t have this issue, so I’m curious if it was ill-machined set screws or something. Still a bummer it happened in the first place, at least you got a refund.

    • @BerscakCustomGuitars
      @BerscakCustomGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There were no sharp parts I could see, but the front of the set screws did come to a point, they weren't flat. I had bought them bc of the other positive reviews, so idk what the issue was. But they did make it right, and I'm much happier with the Steinbergers, so it all worked out in the end.

    It is appalling that the mfg that designed and engineered the particular Riot system shown in this video, and that is now pushing its sale, is remaining quiet regarding this engineering F*CK-*P.

    I don’t get it. Why are these desirable? What do they do that a standard locking Schaller or Grover can’t do? If it aint broke, don’t fix it.

    • @BerscakCustomGuitars
      @BerscakCustomGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went for them bc I wanted something radical for the Great Guitar Build Off. It was really all about the looks, the functionality is WAY more of a pain than a normal tuner. String changes are not fun with these. The Steinberger tuners are much better and have a similar look, which is what I was going for in the first place.

    • @gnumarco
      @gnumarco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree. It makes no sense to have the string to a 90 degree angles to enter the tuning machine and have the string under tension. You usually want to have the smoothest angles you can all along the string.

    • @devilsguitaristmusic
      @devilsguitaristmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only guitar that either of the Steinbergers or the Riot Tuners are really made for is the Firebird. You can just stick a pair of Shallers or Grovers on most Firebirds. But I wouldn't put the Riot Tuners on anything.

    • @martinluthierking
      @martinluthierking ปีที่แล้ว

      the design solves a few things…mainly it frees up the design of the headstock and placement of the tuners…but the tuners just fall short in functioning well

    • @BrunodeSouzaLino
      @BrunodeSouzaLino 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Steinberger gearless is very compact as well. You end only having short knobs on the back of the headstock and also you lose the winders sticking up from the top as well.

    I ordered 2 sets and none of the 12 tuning machines worked. Either the strings slip through when trying to tune to pitch or the strings break at the set screw. It's a design flaw. Don't buy!
