I had no idea that Thomas's father ran De Lauer's Super Newsstand. I've never been inside, but I have fond memories from the early 1960s of waiting outside in the car with my mom, brother, and sisters while my father would pick up the Sunday NY Times, some comics for us, and an assortment of magazines and other newspapers. It's cool to hear that it's still open and is considered an Oakland institution. I'll be heading up there ASAP.

EVERYONE had started talking about it, and by everyone I mean everyone. Everyone from the gym bros, to the mma fighters, all the way to people like Dr David Sinclair, and Dr Rhonda Patrick.
It’s been five years, and I don’t even consider it a challenge anymore. It’s like going to work, in the sense that it’s just another part of my day now.

These could bring any many to his knees, thank God they don’t have Jbox in the east anymore!
First guy I came across when I got into low carb, taught me a lot and ironically I’m branching out a little bit and adding back certain food just like him.
I totally agree with his fasting theory, lot of arguable theories but definitely undeniable what it does for anyone battling with food and how it can rule us if we don’t try to find a way to manage it.

Intermittent fasting stimulates autophagy something that caloric restriction never does. This is the reason why when you lose massive amounts of weight by fasting you won’t have much loose skin sagging around your body. The same can’t be said about people eating multiple small meals a day losing weight.

In terms of the blue zones, it's an interesting take to try and look at the outliers between each of those diets, but in reality it doesn't make sense that the outliers would be the reason for the individual longevity in each of those locations. It does however make total sense that all of the regions with the longest living people on earth have many of the same things going on in their diets. It may be more prudent to take only the shared elements of their diets, and totally remove the outliers to form the super diet you're looking for.
The other thing to factor in with the blue zones is that these people have several other key similarities with each other aside from their diets. They live in largely rural unpolluted locations, have access to fresh locally grown organic produce and also locally caught fresh seafood, they have consistent moderately active lifestyles into old age, and also have very close-knit solid community orientated lives that are free from almost all western social stresses. All of these elements may contribute as much if not more than just the diet alone. Having low stress alone has been shown to increase longevity dramatically.
What if the blue zone diets only add an extra 1% to someone's lifespan, and these other factors make up a 30% increase? More study is required to figure out the significance of the impact that each one has.

I just whatched the Intro. I don't agree with the term "mastery" when talking about fasting... Once IF turns from routine to habit (which is ery quic Id say no more than 0 days) then IF is super easy. You don't even think about it. You don't say "woow, another day just eating in a 8/6 hour window... I'm a beast!". It's not like that.
I'm muslim and today I think is day 21 of Ramadan. Which is a water and food IF, which is even more diffcult. I struggled a bit the first days, but now I don't even think about it. In fact, I'm glad Im not wasting my time cooking and easting. I'm being more productive and I get into more Deep Wor sessions then before Ramadan. And I usually do IF the rest of the year too, just not so strict as in Ramadan, so I guess Im very used to it. I dont think it takes discipline energy and that's why I wouldnt consider it mastery. In order to achiee mastery you have to make the thing to master more difficult. So, for IF maing it more dificult would mean fasting for many hours, days, weeks... Which would be stupid...

I'm using Intermittent Fasting to lose weight at the moment. 16hrs was a bit rough at the beginning, so I brought it down to 13. Now I'm getting around 14 hrs +/- 15 minutes. Granted I've been doing it for about 2-3 weeks. I've already lost a decent amount of weight, but I'm not really experiencing this cognitive clarity that people are talking about. I have a friend who is already in tip-top shape and she does it primarily for the mental clarity. Am I doing something wrong?

I believe Thomas that he had loving parents but I would add, I would profile his mother as self-centric, Type A doer-type that wasn't looking at the being that is the child and what the child NEEDS. She's a person who admire for all that she gets done. The thing is, parenting isn't a production enterprise.

  • @sstorm1328

His parents were amazing....his Mom was great ... He is on the Autism spectrum with serious anxiety as a kid .... Running would have been a great way to get free of it for awhile and allow the mind to roam .... OCD is a typical companion for everyone on the spectrum...as is anxiety and the need for control, which can be a huge limiting factor ... The need for control imprisons people.... And this guy fights both all the time ...fights his need for control with control ... And runs from prison by using imprisoning tactics for himself ... He should just take his anxiety along with him like a familiar captive....wherever he wants to go ...same with his need for control ... Might be more relaxing for everyone. He can t be easy to live with all the time otherwise.

It sounds like he's been a tortured soul. His mother should be ashamed of keeping him from his father, doesn't matter if it was 'unintentional.' Also, early childhood anxiety and OCD are probably from not forming a core sense of self in infancy because of a feeling of persistent abandonment. Oh, but his mother was WoNdErFuL. 🙄

Time constraints are a bitch though...Relationships, especially family, may suffer...But they may suffer either way. All you an do is follow the voice of love.

The fact he once upon a time weighed 300lbs, seems to me he is biologically designed to be able to hold onto weight pretty easily compared to many others, so developing and shaping up muscle "naturally," without needing to use PED's, would be very achievable. Testosterone levels (high), unless your body/receptors are sensitive to it, will not be as much of a determining factor (using very large dose PED's aside, and even then...), as some mistakingly believe, in developing large body musculature. Biodiversity is very REAL!

So a man who claims to have been running 10Ks since he was five years old is going to tell fat people how to lose weight? What would he know about it? It's never been an issue for him. The lack of self awareness is crazy.

I don’t think you listened to the whole story. The self sabotage of being 300lbs later in life. So I’ve been both. Did you not know I was 300lbs? Maybe not.

@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial I apologize for making a scumbag remark. But I just disagree with Chris Williamson constantly having athletes come on the show telling people they can be them too by doing this.
It's like having doctors and lawyers coming on all the time saying how anyone can become a doctor or lawyer. Sure, everyone knows how to do this, study hard and apply yourself. But everyone also knows that not everyone has the mental abilities like intelligence and determination to actually do these things. Why do we assume differently for weightloss? Maybe not everyone has the mental abilities to avoid weight gain in this fastfood, sugar drink society.

@@metsfanal The whole point is that everyone can ( not literally )change their life. It will just take different amounts of willpower and the time needed to do soo depends on mental state and/or intelligence.
