SnugSnug reminds me of a character from my 1990s Runequest days, "Dr. Pop" -- an eight-foot-tall Great Troll who was committed to becoming a famous and mighty wizard. The other players attached themselves to this force of destiny in various entertaining ways. [Ed: Dr. Pop, when sorcery failed (as it often did), relied on unique, personal magic such as _Wall of Face_, which manifested as picking up a problem and slamming him face-first into the nearest hard surface.]
I played Titian the mage, He was a dumb barbarian that would cast spells like sword. However because they where spells he could only use the weapon for so many attacks before he deemed it no longer usable and would need to cast for a different weapon. He constantly had to collect "spells" from the bodies of felled enemies.
Tales from the Stinky Dragon (former RT podcast, soon to be on Critical Roll's streaming platform) featured Gum Gum in their first campaign, a super sweet Barbarian who thought he was a flower wizard.
My headcannon is that snugsnug is not a wizard, but actually sorcerer with a 20 charisma. Who uses illusion magic and his charisma to trick everyone else in to underestimating his magic. Is this convoluted as all hell? Yeah, but i think its fun.
I get the feeling SnugSnug graduated from his Wizard school faster than anyone in history, entering and departing a Wizard on the same day. This was probably due to the instructors realizing he was beyond anything they could teach him, due to the prep for his "fireball" spell being that he could easily lift a burning log from the fireplace in the great hall.
@@jaye1967 "Hey look, whats that??!" Points behind judge. "Huh? What" judge turns around. Snugsnug quickly picks up rock and throws it. "Look, I made rock fly" Judge, only seeing the flying rock as they turns back. "Good enough for me. Congratulations Archmage."
"Has anyone ever told you how perfect you are?" I love these character arcs. Going from "oh my god why is this person here" to "I adore this comrade and I will fistfight the gods for them."
Snugsnug reminds me of Grod. I love when people take this approach to a character and can make it work, especially when the rest of the party gets behind what they're doing. This actually can take a *LOT* of creativity and the "out of right field" take on stuff is so memorable.
I was thinking similiar logic to my paladin in 2e. I'm hoping my DM is fine with firearms in his setting. High Con, high strength, high AC characters have great states for firearms. Blunderbuss bitch Paladin. What else is gunpowder besides earth magic? :P Need a vampire dead, fire splinters out of it, need a werewolf dead, silver coins, need blunt damage, bullets are blunt, fire stone pellets. What else attracts attention to your besides a big boom and smoke. Need a blunt weapon, you are holding one.
Reminds me of one TTRPG, that had archetypes instead of classes. So instead of "the wizard" you had "the wise", the rogue was "the deft" and the fighter was "the strong". The advantage of the approach was: you could make any of your characters any of those three. Wanna have a wise barbarian? You are welcome! Now your barbarian is not as beefy as the Strong one, but he is resourceful and sneaky, using his experience with the world to make stuff, that is seemingly impossible. "Use oil to imitate burning hands" type of barbarian. Or one, that would use some tribal symbols to fend off the undead. Up to you
Never got to play him in a game but I once made a character named “Gandalf the Gains” who was a buff wizard with a maul, and most of his spells revolved around making him a viable melee combatant with it.
"SnugSnug would like to cast Disintigrate." "How in the actual floop is that going to happen?" "You watch as SnugSnug proceeds to pull out a sheet of paper that says launch codes on that top" "...Oh no.." xD
Had a halfling once who went to wizard academies and claimed he was a wizard, that he found an old tome in his attic and it called to him to enter the field of study. He devoted all of himself to the craft, learned every spell he could, and never gave up convincing everyone who could hear that he was a wizard in training and would someday master the arcane. Perigold Sparkingstar was not a wizard. Perigold Sparkingstar is a sorcerer. He is in debt to the wizard colleges. He has been studying wizard magic for 19 years. He still hasn't given up on being a wizard.
Um, Actually, he should have cast "Catnap" on his friend, not "Sleep" which does actually work like a Short Rest which, assuming his friend is a wizard, would trigger Arcane Recovery to restore half his wizard levels in spell slots (rounded up). I enjoyed this skit and being smug about knowing DnD spells!
I wanted to make a barbarian who claims to be wizard, while using Giant 2 handed Axe, with a severed hand strapped to the top, because IT means that he Has a free hand needed to cast spells
I have my currrent party chasing down some barbarians, they have come across them twice so far. LIttle do they know barbarians are creatures from the land of barbar.
Could there be wizard/ barbarian, who is actually wizard and, not totally smart, but maybe little bit smarter than barbarian, how ever when he tries to speak or write, people are just comited to misunderstand him? For example he explaining that he doesn't like that college of magic would want to ban draws to go there, because they are momentally at war with some fractions, and the barbarian/wizard trying to say that those drawns are probably normal draws and have probably nothing to do with certain fraction, or if, they hate it too, and they should be allowed there because it is place of study and sometimes even place of peace they can go to? Yet somehow others missunderstand him and now he is siding with draws, even tough that is not what he said 🥲😒
"A little man wearing sunglasses"
"That's an 18"
Glad to see SnugSnug's INT higher than he can count...
Snugsnug cast enlarge on him self

Snugsnug: stand on his toes.

This is hilarious! I played a similar character in a Magic school campaign. He was a orc wild Magic barbarian and he did stuff like this all the time.
That spellcasting descriptions are a perfect fit for artificer, they are not supposed to cast spells conventionally either
SnugSnug is the best, he deserves fame and respect!!
Definitely should have seen that last one coming...
I love SnugSnug, master of the arcane arts.
SnugSnug is my favourite type of protagonist, so stupid he's a genius
SnugSnug must be half-orc, half-troll...and the character is clearly the orc half.
