  • PS5 has reached its second year on the market! Time flies when no one can buy them (until now). Anyway, let's take a look at the past year and how Sony has done with this console since our 1 year review. With big PS5 games finally dropping, new system features going out, the new PS Plus, there's a lot to go over. And believe you me, we peel the label off of all those topics. And tell you what, I want you to help. No really, some of these are really stuck on there. Can you grab that end for me?

The two things I really miss are themes, and the activity from friends when you logged in. I get that the game you're hovered over 'becomes the theme', but its not the same. I also know they've replaced the activity feature with the discover tab that shows updates in games you play, but they just feel like giant ads to me. I miss being able to see when my friends earn trophies, or see what new games they're playing. I don't understand why they changed these things.

Yeah, I feel like this generation of PS lacks the customizability of personalizing your console for yourself and having that sense of connection with the community.
The PS5 does play games well but there's just something beautiful about seeing communities attached to the games you're playing and the activities players share that can be seen easily on the console

Another thing too that the PS4 just didn't have because it was on PS3 is the ability to store media on the system like movies, pictures, and music. Hated that Sony took that out on PS4 and we still can't do that on PS5.

I just got my PS5 a month ago, and I love it. I've been rocking the PS3 since 2009, and I totally skipped the PS4 era, so it's a huge step up in the graphical department. I've been playing catch up with a bunch of PS4 games that I missed out on, so I'm taking full advantage of using the PS Plus subscription. I know folks have been complaining about that, but it's allowing me to play a bunch of games I missed out on without having to actually buy them. I just wish the classics catalog had more games in it; the PS Store on PS3 had way more games on its list. And wish that you could bring over your games that you purchased on the PS3 PS Store over to PS5. Either way, looking forward to what the future holds!

For me, dual sense is true next gen and I hope to get more experiences and more creativity from the controller going forward. I wish TH-cam would get a dedicated picture in picture mode. Right now it's a great feature that is very janky. Also, I've only used it a handful of times, but the game help videos really do come in handy when you get stuck and imo is quicker than looking it up on TH-cam.

I miss the freedom that we once had with the PS3, you could create your own themes and didnt have to get stuck in a subscription loop just to play online. Also you have to pay up just to play old classic games. That is why i didnt buy a PS5 but switched to a gaming pc, and i have no regrets. You can customize everything, from playing with mouse and keyboard, maximizing the graphics and installing mods. You dont have to pay for a stupid subscription just to play old games or online. Sure you dont start games that quickly as with a PS5 but the options are limitless. And you save so much money over time.

11:00 I found this put the hard way. For MW2, I was looking up guides for the mission "Alone" for a veteran run of the game. I saved halfway through the mission, exited the game and when I returned, selected the "Resume Game" Activity card for the mission. Tjis resulted in the Mission being started from the beginning and my difficulty being set to "recruit" (which I found out after completing the mission) and caused me to have to replay the mission again.

One thing I miss is the folders feature that was in the PS4 it was just so much easier to have all my downloaded games in one area instead of searching for them I really hope they bring them back. Another is themes as I am sure everyone else has been saying I just really miss how a theme can change the system entirely from the sound, system music and the icons on the interface. I will say PS5 has had a better start then the PS4 and 3 IMO and they are doing very well. I think they just need to work on PS plus and also working on the streaming service and also PS plus on PC because the UI there is just horrendous and honestly no one likes having to stream a game.

I'd like themes/custom themes to come back. And when they eventually bring it to the ps5, I hope they give us the ability to transfer the themes we already bought from the ps4 to the ps5. I'm probably in the minority here but, I actually have no issue with the cloud streaming. I find it quite helpful in the fact I don't have to download a game, take up space and then therefore I need to delete games to free up space. I have fiber internet so, I don't ever have an issue with latency, lag or image quality. The streaming is so good that there were times where I forgot I was streaming a game. Having to just jump into a game without having to first download them and wait seems pretty nice to me. I hope they add external hard drive support in the future.

For me, the Dualsense and the improoved audio made really a huge difference in how I experience new games on PS5. But sadly that's kind of about it..
Small to no load times are indeed great. But I already had a third-party game for PS5 (Steelrising) wich seems not to be the highest demanding or pretiest, and it does have visible load times. It feels like if you were playing a PS4 game on PS5. I even checked and there is no PS4 version wich could have maybe explained this..?
Backwards compatibility is nice indeed, but at least one of my games in the store ist listed as "incompatible with PS5".. So I will probably still play all my ps4 games on my actual PS4 pro, also because of the limited (or expensive to buy) storage on PS5.
Like the majority, I also miss some of the homescreen features like folders or some sort of themes. I also have no streaming-service account, which renders the "Media" view useless and kind of annoying as you get right into when you accidentaly press R1. I also miss the feature from PS4 to very easily display the whole trophy-list, from the current game, inside the quick menu. Maybe this can be added as side-view/PiP?
As my final impression: PS5 is great and all. It's in my opinion a very beautiful designed console and the Dualsense really sets the immersion on a new level. But for now, I still play more on my PS4 (and PS3) then my PS5.

I have a question about the new PS5 edge controller that is coming in Jan.. does the controller allow the user to replace the sticks? The reason I ask is that with the current controller it's the stick that have given me the most problem... They break down really quickly and even if sony replaces the controller it's a pain.. if I could just buy a replacement stick and plug that into the controller it would make dealing with controller stick drift and failure a lot easier... I recognize that the controller stick get the most harsh use and action and am happy replacing the sticks cause I can be hard on them, but replacing the whole controller ever time I get a worn out stick seems a huge waste to me... both in time and dealing with the recycling of the old controller that works find except for a stick...

I was an early adopter for PS5, it's the first console I actually bought on launch day, but I've just been kinda disappointed so far. There have been some great games but I certainly wouldn't describe anything that's released so far as generation defining. Realistically, how are games that are cross-gen with PS4 even supposed to be generation defining at all, they aren't even exclusive to this generation of consoles. My favorite games this year weren't from first party Sony studios (haven't beat GoW R yet so that could change). I'm hoping stuff like FF16 and Spider-Man 2 can really wow me next year, but I have to admit I am expecting Insomniac to announce that Spider-Man 2 will release for PS4, meaning "true next gen" may still be a ways away.
The lack of communication is really annoying as well, you state that Sony is taking the Nintendo route of announcing stuff when they are ready but I don't agree with this. Nintendo still shows up to trade shows like Gamescom and TGS, and they have multiple Directs/Mini-Directs/Indie Showcases a year. They also have a first party studio game almost every month. We've had I think 3 State of Plays this year from Sony, no Showcases, and they don't show up to any trade shows or really communicate what they have in the works at all. I know what Insomniac has cooking, but what else is there actually to look forward to from Sony? TLoU Factions? It's just been a pretty frustrating experience because I really want to be more enthralled in this console than I am currently. But so far it's just proven that being an early adopter is really only exciting for a very short amount of time.

The main reason I signed up to that tier was to play PS1 games. They hardly ever put any on the system. Also quick resume on the Xbox is so useful when switching between games. I haven't seen it's worth yet. I bought the PS5 to improve load times as well as graphics and new games. But the difference is extremely minor (load times). And when most of the games I play don't even take advantage of the Dualsense's abilities or have the new improved graphics per say (PS4 titles) then the worth to me is less. And the way Astro Bot plays with all the features but the other titles don't seems like a bait and switch maneuver. And don't get me started on PSVR!!! But whenever they decide to step the game up I'm ready...I guess.

Loved Astros playroom, sadly it's still the best game that showcases the dualsense features

I've seen too many games where trophies glitch out if you use Activity Cards so I will just never use them.

I don't have a PS5 but I liked watching this video. Looking forward to the year 3 review when I probably still won't have a PS5.

A brilliant video about the PS5. Blimey 2 years already. I luckily got mine this year with the horizon bundle. I know PS5 is an amazing console & with the graphics too but I still say the PS3 is always the best console out of all of them.
