GoPro should actually put the hydrophobic coating on the dive case. I never take a GoPro in saltwater without protection. one salty leak and your camera is dead.

I got the Hero 10 because the GP2 processor allows the camera to write bursts of RAW still images in about half of the time as the Hero 8 (and probably the H9 as well). I do apnea spearfishing so I need a small camera for stills. As I am holding my breath, time is important and a burst of stills allows you to get the right shot. The older GoPros were too slow, I also got the SeaLife Micro 3.0. But I wish it was faster at writing files. If I had known about these improvements in the Hero 10 I would not have got the Sealife (but it was discounted open box at least) which only shoots 4K 30fps. The Hero 10 also allows high res screen grab stills when you film in 5.3K. You can always get a printable image if you are filming something memorable.
I found this great review for me who used to take the video with black 8, can't wait to explore with my new Black 10.
Great overview, clear as your west coast water. The battery could last longer during a dive if the "secret menu" for the presets would work with the front-facing screen off. The presets are listed on the back LCD anyway, so there should be no need to have the front LCD draw juice (also only on the rear screen fps and resolutions are shown for each preset). If a firmware update would fix this, it would be great.

How does it compare to the iPhone 13 pro Max for underwater images and videos?;)
nice but the price of the filter is too high. $200 vs $70 for the 3 gopro filters, ok you have the macro but I had it on my gopro 6 with polarpro and didn't use it much. Now with my gopro 10 your product interests me but too expensive for little.

Does the go pro 10 overheat easily underwater?
Because i've read bad reviews on the Go Pro web sites where Manu people are disappointed with the low battery and overheating
Yes I can confirm this, water even leaked inside and it was just below 3-2 ft, good thing it was just freshwater
Was the video of the great white shark shot with a flip filter or not?
No, that was with just the camera based on the shallow depth
But does the dive housing affect the sound as bad as previous models?
It's certainly not doing anything to improve the sound, but that is often one of the least important aspects for underwater image makers.
You talk extensively about video capture underwater, but what about still shots? Will it capture sharp still as well?
When shooting underwater, does the camera overheat and shut down like it will do on land?
The still image quality is great, and did get a little bump up in resolution on the Hero 10, but ultimately it is the lack of control over exposure that prevents the GoPro from being a great choice for photography. If you are down with simple point-and-shoot operation with nothing but auto exposure then it is a decent choice, but ultimately all the coolest features on GoPros are video-centric.
We have not encountered any overheating issues so far in our underwater testing.
The photos are decent. You always need to shoot RAW in to be able to recover details and fix the white balance in postl. If you shoot 5.3K you can also get 17 or 19 megapixels screen grabs. But it is not a raw photo, so the editing will be limited in the scope.

I recently used a Hero10 with no red filter and it came out ok. What are you thoughts on red filters for the 10, please?
The Hero 10 definitely has the best color without a filter that we've seen yet from a GoPro. At depths beyond ~15ft it starts to lose some warmer tones, which is where a FLIP filters helps to compensate. This becomes more noticeable the deeper you go.
Thanks for a great vid. But my main problem underwater always is colors. I am trying to decide between Hero10 and the Paralenz Vaquita which boasts a real-time automatic color correction dependent on the depth the camera registers on the fly. How would you rate the white balance capabilities of the Hero10? Would you use filters?
Thanks for watching! Both cameras produce good color, but we definitely take a Flip Filter on every dive with our GoPros. The Paralenz is a really cool POV cam for mounting on your mask. The GoPro has a bit more general camera functionality, more field of view options, and an incredible level of built-in stabilization.
Set your hero 10 to natural colours (it will look greenish under 10 m) and then make some magic in post production aka adobe premiere / davinchi / ect. There are a ton of tutorials on how to set up your camera. It would also be great to have some external light, you can buy one for like 50$
Will the go pro 10 work underwater without the case? I’m afraid it will break. There are these little holes that don’t look waterproof
The camera itself is waterproof. Those holes are the microphones. We strongly recommend always using the housing when taking the camera underwater.

Would the gopro hero 10 provide great views in dark water im snorkeling in Norway in winter & there’s not much sunlight
Low light performance is directly tied to the size of the sensor. GoPro uses one of the smallest sensors available, so naturally it will not perform exceptionally well in low light environments. You'd do best to add a pair of video lights to help brighten things up.

What color setting do you recommend for the hero 10 underwater - flat, neutral or vibrant. Is flat the way to go if I am color grading with Davinci resolve ?
Flat would be the way to go if you are planning to color grade it. We like the vibrant setting but it can sometimes appear a bit oversaturated. Natural tends to be the best balance for color accuracy while preserving some range to correct.

There is a huge difference in focus above and underwater in the above GoPro videos. I think this camera is not good for underwater videos as they feel soft and without anything in focus clearly.
We don't feel that way, and think that the video speaks for itself. The GoPro has a fixed focus lens with a close hyperfocal distance.

Hi, great video! I currently use the Flip7, is that compatible with the Hero9 underwater housing?
No, the changes in the GoPro housing from 7 to 8 prompted a new Flip re-design. The newer Flip 8 & 9 is backwards compatible from 10 down to 5, but the Flip 7 will only work up to GoPro 7.

We typically use Natrural because Vibrant can tend to oversaturate things a bit. If you don't think Natural gives you enough 'punch' you can use Vibrant instead.

Only by using custom presets. You cannot change individual settings within the preset while in the housing. Check out our Hero 9 Best Settings video for a detailed explanation.
New battery lasts at least one long dive. Probably two.

Sure!
Does it capture sound in the water
Yep, but unless you like the sound of Darth Vader breathing extremely close to you through a muffled filter we wouldn't highly recommend using it.

Does the secret menu bit still work with 1.20 firmware? Every time I hit the shutter and mode buttons together, it starts shooting video and adds a highlight! Am I missing something?

I don't like it that you need a phone to use this due to its firmware. Which latest GoPro does not need phone to be able to operate?
We're not a huge fan of that either. The Hero 8 did not require an app pairing at startup upon release, but we have not powered up a new one in a while to see if the current firmware version requires it or not.
@@backscatteruw Basically CIA gets your gopro's serial once you sync to phone which is already accessible by them. I prefer stand-alone g video recorder. I will check out Hero 8. Thanks.
It's a high time for a sensor upgrade and real resolution bump, no reason to upgrade...in my mind
who needs higher resolution, if 5.3k isnt enough for your application then no matter what, you wont be happy with any gopro of the future anyway. But I totally agree that a bigger or otherwise more lightsensitive sensor would be a gamechanger
It's still producing one of the overall best images, with some of the best specs, out of the entire action camera market. We're pretty happy with it and think it is noticeably better than any older GoPro, but to each their own. If there were one thing we'd love more of it would be better low light sensitivity.

The camera still benefits greatly from FLIP color correction filters, especially at normal dive depths in blue water conditions

That will get your GoPro all set, you may just want to use some of the higher settings (4K 120) that the Hero 10 offers. Just use the filters at the depths printed on them along with the Custom Settings and you are good to go!

Unfortunately, with low light (deep dives) GoPros (and all the other action cams) are crap due to the small sensor
They definitely benefit from video lights in darker environments.
WARNING !! this camera is full of bugs and NOT a pro camera. The SD ERROR GLITCH is well documented and it will spontaneously erase your entire SD card. I've been a pro UW photographer for 30 years and right now I'm in fiji shooting a film and we lost 2 cards of hard got footage, losing thousands of dollars in the process. you may not have a problem at first but you eventually. Invest in a pro camera like the GH5 or Sony A7.

does it need the water proof case when going diving or no ?
The camera itself is waterproof to 30ft/10m. You'll want the case for real diving since you'll likely be much deeper than that. Plus, the housing reduces wear and tear and risk of damage to the camera, as well as a mount for filters and macro optics.
