Out of all the TH-cam videos on "BEST SETTINGS FOR UNDER WATER WITH YOUR GOPRO" this one has helped me the most. I'm going to try this on some video my daugher just took with her GoPro 9 with a dive she just did on a wreck off the Sunshinbe Coast. Thanks for the tips and editting workflow.
Thank you Adam, really glad you enjoyed the video and im really glad this has helped you! Editing is definitely something takes a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it, it's quite fast. Starting out i'd suggest just using my workflow step by step as a base and as it becomes second nature adapt it to suit you :) Good luck with your footage and editing!
In cozumel on a dive trip when my 9 bit the dust, bought a 10 and tbh the first dqy looked like crap... I watched the video and set my camera accordingly and you saved this trip! Thank you for the great info it is amazing how different everything looks now...
Absolutely the best instruction video I have seen to date. Thank you for your excellent advice. I was finally able to properly color correct my videos. While there are numerous other videos covering the same topic available on TH-cam, Tom's video just clicked for me on how to use PremierPro correctly.
You're diving swr tomorrow! Enjoy that, it's such an incredible dive site! Hope you get loads of sharks and some epic conditions. One minor tweak i'd suggest if you did follow my settings - is increase your maximum ISO to maybe 1600 (unless you have lights then ignore this) - just as the site is quite deep and especially around the cave it's very dark. 800 will give you better results, but given how dark the cave is, 1600 will help!
@@eddy_lee 100% will be! On the older hero’s even those with 4K, unless they’ve got 4K60, I always shoot in 1080p60 just so we can slow all our clips down in post - they look so much smoother and more cinematic!

Very informative and detailed video for a beginner like me. I have one question - Do I need to attach an external light to my GoPro with your settings while I scuba dive?
Thank you for the valuable info! I had a dive about a year ago and at 90' the stock GoPro settings caused the blacks to change to a red tint. I think this was the auto color settings struggling with the environment. Using your settings, and color correction, it made a huge difference on my last trip. I caught some of the best dive footage ever! Thanks again for taking the time to put this video out there!
Hello Tom, Thank you for posting this video, it is very helpful. Question about filters: I see many other videos suggesting red or magenta filters for underwater shooting with a GoPro. Would you recommend using a filter as well? or Can you achieve the same affect as a filter through video editing?
Hello Tom, a huge thank you. even though I'll be using final cut pro, I don't think it's gonna be that different from one another. even playing with the colors will make a huge difference to the dull videos right from my gopro :) wish I had seen this video sooner :D
Do you ever use any filters when shooting with your GoPro underwater etc the Polarpro DiveMaster Filter? I am a beginner and are wondering if the filters are worth buying, or if maybe you can achieve equally good footage by choosing the right settings and edit the footage afterwards?
That was a lot of work but me as an amateur photographer I worked with photoshop for a few minutes lol very informative will have to do a lot of post processing when I I get my go prom10 hen I go to Hawaii next month awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed! Good quality red filters are definitely worth using. Some of them are way too red a but similarly to what I did above, you can remove those reds by doing the opposite in the curves section if there are too much red tones. Careful though! Some cheap Amazon brands give off really bad colours
Thanks greatly needed this. I'm also a beginner with GoPro settings for scuba diving as many of your other commenters. However, can you offer some perspective on using GoPro's Quik software for editing? I'm trying GoPro's subscription service since they're offering a really good deal on the 11 with that subscription right now. Any thoughts?
Great video. I'm surprised you didn't mention red filters which should help so far as they reduce the level of tweaking you have to do in post. A matter of preference mostly if you have the correct settings for neutral colors and the skills to do the colour grading in post.
I think this is because he uses a video light underwater so a red filter would screw with his white light source underwater which helps to give more accurate colors (but only to what the light manages to illuminate)
If you have a bunch of different underwater shots, will you color grade every single clip individually or do you have an approach to solve that problem?
Hey mark - yep I’d use exactly the same settings. I use identical settings UW, with and without lights, and on land. The settings are designed to give you the most freedom and control in editing - so no matter what you use your camera for or what with, you should be able to edit them to get the best results. Hope it helped!
I used the red filter this weekend in cozumel but according to tom's settings just add back in the red in post... that's what I did and it looks fabulous....
Hey Tom, this was an incredibly helpful video. Do you think you could do another tutorial on how you do underwater sound design or do you have any sound packs you recommend?
I like your informative video. Can I achieve good underwater video and photo with post production using without red filter? I notice the my videos more yellowish with the filter and less clear. I'm using go pro hero 9.
Hi, thanks for the video. For some reason, my go pro 10 does not have the + button for me to add anymore settings on my video. How do I sort that out or have you had an issue with that?
Thanks for this. In your experience, would you rather color correct in post with native rather than going with 4500k and adding a bit of reds that are lost in the water?
Came back from my first dive trip and set my video settings according to your recommendation. But I'm not a friend of the wide angle. It distorts the view and the camera can not recalculate that fast on the sides. Almost impossible to keep the camera super steady, to not reveal the wide lense.
Hi Tom, what about 4K 120 FPS with Boost? Just asking because that’s what some other creators recommend. And would you use your settings just for underwater or also for snorkeling? (0-5 meters)
Tom, thank you so much for very detailed explanation! May I ask you, what you use to reduce the video noise? And also I would like to hear your personal opinion about GoPro 10 vs. GoPro 8 Black... I used both of them and and when I did side by side video test, I found that GoPro 10 have way much more video noise and artifacts compared to GoPro 8 Black on a exactly same settings.
Tom, this is a really great video for those of us just starting out with use the GP underwater but *please* lose the background music, it's just so annoying when you're talking all the way through to have this extra layer of noise to deal with.
