I am not sure there are real change with the 12… but at least a review would be great as I don’t see real benefits to the 12 yet for underwater… would be great to have a nice backscatter review here 🤞
My compliments on a fantastic video. I really learned a lot and appreciate the downloadable cheat sheet...already laminated and in my camera case. You were clear and thoughtful in how you presented the options and limitations of the camera. I am transistioning from a traditional Nikon UW camera set up to GoPro for ease of travel and because I just can't see as well as I used to justify purchasing a new camera system. I just purchased the GoPro 11, filters and lenses from Backscatter and received wonderful service and super fast shipping. I was thinking of setting up two housings, one for filters and one for lenses, since I didn't want to have to deal with changing setups on a boat. Rob gave me great advice and I purchased the threaded filters to fit on the mount. Not only did it save me money, but it made better sense. I have purchased lots of underwater camera gear over the years from other companies, but this time I felt like a valued customer at Backscatter. Now I know why so many people visit your booth at Scuba Show! Happy Diving! Elissa
regarding the photo preset in the end I made some tests. The photo quality is way better, when using the wide raw setup, taking advantage of the raw quality and just crop out the round corners at the end. Tested it with the +10 close up lens on hero 10 black. Got a final resolution of 4866 x 3244 Pixels.
Probably the best video to get me started with scuba diving and shooting video. I like the way you threw the backskatter products in there. lol. I like the Double Handle Tray & Arch. I may just purchase it.
I see the setting options on the GoPro 12 are slightly different. Would you please at least create a GoPro 12 specific cheat sheet for the settings you would recommend. Thanks in advance!
Hi, I wonder if you guys did the actual test hero 11 with the case underwater? The overheating issue sucks.. and it causes moist on the case. though it will neutralize given after 15-20mins. so removing the case is the only option if you want to continue shooting. But the risk of without the case when you go deeper underwater.... I do hope you had included this on your guide as well for other users of hero 11 be aware of.
thanks for this very helpful ..I wish i could get all your equipment here in Kenya but finances are tight hopefully hope to buy the lights soon...need them asap as a dive instructor here!
Hey Robin- Finally upgrading my Hero 5 I’ve been rocking since 2016. I purchased the tray and flip 5 from you back then. I have an 11 on the way. Will I need the flip 11 on the new dive housing or will the old flip 5 attachments work? Thanks
Thanks a lot for this perfect video ! Have you also experienced overheating when shooting 5.3K ? I missed several dolphins shots because of that, is there any solution or should I stick to 4K ? Thanks again for your work ! 💪
We haven't experienced any overheating ourselves, but we have also spent much more time shooting 4K than 5.3K. We will do some further testing and provide an update.
Very useful video. I've just bought GoPro 11 and I'm going to record my dives next week. Two questions regarding settings: should I change White Balance to warmer colors (for example to 4500K) if I don't have an external filter? Additionally, wouldn't it be better to change Color setting from "natural" to "vibrant"?
You're better off leaving the white balance to auto when diving without a filter. The 'vibrant' color setting boosts contrast and color saturation, which can also be done in post without "baking it in" to the footage, which is why we prefer 'natural.'
thanks Robin for all of your informative videos, Backscatter is our go to for underwater equipment. Can we access the "hidden menu" of presets while underwater with the GoPro Black 12 as we can with the 11 Black? thanks!
Video and cheat sheet are great! But, I have the same question, always all the videos I've seen suggest max ISO @800, could you please clarify? Thanks! Again, great video.
We set and leave the max ISO to 6400, to be prepared for changing underwater conditions. If dark clouds roll overhead and reduce the available light, we can still capture a school of hammerheads swimming by, even if the image is noisy. We would rather have a noisy image that we can use than an underexposed image that is unusable.
Thanks you so much I bought GoPro 13 yesterday and you increase me a lot of knowledge I want to buy good housing with holder and filter , How can I management this from your company?
The best way to order from us is to email us at sales@backscatter.com or call us at 831-645-1082. Here is a link to the GoPro section of our website as well (www.backscatter.com/underwater/GoPro)
Hi, for shooting videos of whales, the wide angle settings will be the best option. If you are within 0-20 feet of depth, no filter is necessary. I would also check out our Sharp Wide Lens Pro for a wider perspective for larger subjects as well. Here is a link for more info (www.backscatter.com/reviews/post/Best-Underwater-GoPro-Wide-Angle-Lens).
You mentioned it's not great for photos. What if I do want to take photos but I want to stay around the same price point? At the same price point I figure I may as well just clip photos out of my videos on the GoPro right?
If you are looking for a great entry level photo camera, the OM System TG-7 is a great place to start. The TG-7 is very similar to the TG-6, please check out this review for more info (www.backscatter.com/reviews/post/Olympus-TG-6-Review-Easiest-Underwater-Compact-Camera). With the GoPro 12, the options for HyperSmooth are Off/On/AutoBoost while the video uses the option "Boost". Should I use "On" or "AutoBoost" with a GoPro 12? TIA
Overall yes with a few minor differences. There are some layout differences in the menu and different settings relating to Hypersmooth. Otherwise it pretty much all applies equally.
One question about the Color temperature. Would a fixed color temperature not have advantages during Shootings in different height with magenta or red filter? With Auto it’s always changing by the camera - a correction by the depth would not be possible (snorkelling vs 6m or 12m). Or is the correcting so good that it’s a low brainer. Audi and forget and then the filter pending on the light?!
Hi, rather than taking a photo while in video mode, the best way to capture a still image from video is to use the GoPro Quik app or any other editing software. The Quik app should have an option to "Grab Photo" when reviewing your video.
It is highly unlikely that your ISO will reach 6400. As long as you are close to your subjects, your video lights will give you a good exposure. The GoPro's Auto ISO will only reach the higher limits in low-light situations, prioritizing capturing a potentially noisy but usable shot over an underexposed one that is unusable.
Yes, that's correct. Stick to the settings we recommend regardless of how bright your light is. The brighter the better, because it will allow the camera to use lower ISO values closer to 100. Just because the ISO can go up to 6400 doesn't mean that it HAS to - it will only do that in dark situations.
I can always depend on Backscatter to have the best underwater setup videos for my GP. I found you when I bought my first GP (Hero 5) and I have setup all my Dive Club buddies with your filters. Keep up the great work! I’m excited to get the 11 and set it up to hopefully get better video of Lady Luck (part of the wreck trek in Pompano Beach FL). Her deck is at 110 ft with all kinds of great video opportunities.

Great video! If I haven’t any extra lights, and I’m going more than 24m, you suggest to keep the deep red filter? Or just remove it to capture more ambient lights? Thank you!
It really depends on how bright the ambient light is at that depth. The filters will reduce the amount of light for the camera, so it is a balance between low light (more noise) with the filter or bad color. We recommend using lights to overcome this.
Hey guys compliments for the amazing video! Just one question, after applying all the setting you suggest, in order to have the best videos, would you recommend the red filter, right? Moreover, is there a video that you want to suggest me to learn how color grade the photo and the videos? Because I have never did it, and I really would love to bring my shoots at another level! (I imagine that even if I am going to buy the red filter, still I have to color grad my picture am I right?) Just tried a video with these settings on my hero 11 and the camera over heated at 40 minutes, sitting in a room at 20 degrees C, and not in a dive case. How do they go on a dive in a case in warm water (25 degrees C +)? How long can I expect to get before the camera overheats?
We haven't experienced any overheating warnings when running these settings. Was it continuously recording that entire time? If so, that explains it. Most typical use when diving will be to capture short clips. Even when running for minutes at a time we didn't get any overheat warnings. If you need to run the clips for 40+ minutes the settings may need to be adjusted.
The camera does not have near enough bit depth to be able to correct color to the degree required. A filter will increase the ISO and subsequently the noise, but it's worth it for the better color in our opinion.
I live in Europe and I will watch the video's in 50Hz (?), but I will make video's in country's with 60Hz. Does that matter? Should I shoot in 50 or 60 HZ? Ans thx for the great video, I really like the explanation.
Thank you for one of the best settings videos I have seen on TH-cam ! I am curious though about the benefits-strategy for setting the Max ISO to 6400. I have been setting mine at 1650 and an underwater photographer I subscribe to (Ryuta Ogawa) recommends 200-400 for Max ISO. Not being a native photographer, any information would be helpful.
200 - 400 is way to low. As soon as it gets a bit darker your camera cannot compensate and you videos get very dark. If you put your ISO much higher yes you will get grain when it is darker but at least your videos will not be completley dark
I would like to purchase your flip system with just one +10 macro lens, no filters. Could you please guide me where to order in Europe? Many thanks in advance 🌹Eva
We do not offer the frame without the filters. Your best bet would be to order a Single Flip and the +10 Close-Up Lens individually. You can find European dealers here: www.flipfilters.com/dealer-list/
You can have any 2 things mounted on the Flip at one time. You can absolutely have one filter and one macro lens together, but you would not use them at the same time nor will they overlap.
Is it possible to use red filter and macro lens simultaneously? Or it's better to use flashlight for macro shooting instead of red filter? Great video by the way)
You don't need to use the filter and the lens simultaneously. When shooting macro you will always need a video light, which provides all the color. There is no need for a filter when shooting that close with a light.
That's because you have the resolution set to 1080 instead of 4K. The tighter zoom will produce tighter macro shots, so it is a good idea, as long as that is the resolution you intend to shoot at. Plus, you can still have Hypersmooth set to On at 2.0x and 1080, which is great. If shooting at 4K the camera will be limited to 1.4x.
Question. Will using a lower resolution. Let’s say 2.7K rather than 5K, improve the GoPro’s low light capability? Or- at least have the benefit of smoothing out High ISO grain?
If one prefers to use a “flat” color profile with the red filters to do their color correction in post, would you still recommend setting white balance to “auto” rather than “native?”
Sorry to hear that you experienced a problem. We'd love to connect with you directly to help solve it. Please shoot us an email at info@backscatter.com and we can work with you to make sure that you have the best settings for your shooting requirements set. Thanks!
I think it is very important, especially the first days of diving, to check the result obtained after each dive! Taking your macbook on holiday is a must!

Because you have the Anti-Flicker setting set to 50hz instead of 60hz. Go to 12:43 for the location of this setting.
@@backscatteruw oh now i get it
i set it to 50hz bc u said ppl who use the pal thingy should set it like that
i live in germany btw
thank uuu
Question. Will using a lower resolution. Let’s say 2.7K rather than 5K, improve the GoPro’s low light capability? Or- at least have the benefit of smoothing out High ISO grain?
We have found that shooting at lower framerates so the camera can run a slower shutter had a better effect than lowering the resolution.
@@backscatteruw based on this I would like to reduce the fps. I use 8:7 in 4K. but why does it make me use only the 60 and not the 30?
If one prefers to use a “flat” color profile with the red filters to do their color correction in post, would you still recommend setting white balance to “auto” rather than “native?”
Yes, as you want it to be able to automatically correct for different depths and changing lighting conditions during your dive.
@@backscatteruw Ok thanks!
nice
Should you use video lights and the red filter at the same time, or is it best just to use lights only at deep depths or in a cave?
In a cave with no ambient light to correct it is best to only use lights.
@backscatteruw could lights substitute a red filter in a normal setting like in the thumbnail?
@@standishwheeler6767 You'll want lights if you are close enough to a subject for them to be effective (about 1m away).
All my videos are spoiled because of your advice! Never install the maximum ISO more than 800!!! Never!
Sorry to hear that you experienced a problem. We'd love to connect with you directly to help solve it. Please shoot us an email at info@backscatter.com and we can work with you to make sure that you have the best settings for your shooting requirements set. Thanks!
@@backscatteruw I sent you to mail links to my videos. Evaluate the result with your settings yourself.
I think it is very important, especially the first days of diving, to check the result obtained after each dive! Taking your macbook on holiday is a must!
what problem did you have?
