Thanks for the compliment sir. Your statement is why I decided to do the video. Nobody really has knowledge of the M5 so I thought I would try to share some information.
@@thecoltar15resource After seeing your video, it's my opinion that they really need to be marketing this product to the civilian market as well as LE and Mil. I'm assuming they have dialed back their civ marketing due to politics though. If it's 1 MOA as reported, that puts it up there with some big AR manufacturer names in accuracy correct?
@andrewalexander3119 honestly I take the 1 MOA word with a grain of salt. My conversations have been second-hand. I have confidence it's a very accurate rifle, but there are a lot of factors that have to align for such great accuracy to be consistent. In regard to the marketing, I agree that it should be marketed more. I would like to see additional aftermarket support for the CM556 as well.
Great overview and detail about the CM556. Looking forward to a range report and accuracy test. Years ago, when POF introduced their rifle with a longer barrel nut (which is ribbed), they claimed faster heat dissipation and I would always hear guys comment that it was just a "marketing gimmick". And yet here's Colt and others doing the same thing!
Thanks for sharing. Curious what the interior of the lower looks like compared to standard. Thanks for the in depth look. Due to this design I imagine colt will not be returning to monolithic designs, and future releases will follow this platform.
I show the interior of the lower in my second video that I posted previously. I believe we will see the monolithic design (6940-series) fade away. It does not offer anything better than the M5. The M5 is not only a superior design as far as ballistic performance is concerned, the M-LOk compatible rail is more desirable by many. The primary drawback to the M5 design is the lack of aftermarket rail options.
Your are probably the only person that would know this besides Colt, are the barret nuts for the LE6940 the same as the LE901-16S or the M7 Sentry Rifles? Thank You in advance.
I wish that colt would have either beefed up the area between the chamber and shoulder or just done a lighter profile barrel all the way through. Not sure why they decided to stick with a gov style profile. Curious why they chose a carbine over a mid-length gas system on the 16 inch as well.
Yes. At that price I’d buy something like a Geissele Super Duty or the DDM4. You can look at the LE6920 Socom and it has a true Colt heavy barrel but is not free floated.
I had a favor to ask, do you think you could measure the total length of the barrel extension? Or give an approximation even if the number isn’t completely accurate? I’m considering machining my own for a rebarrel project for my Colt M5 because there’s no other way to source them at present. I’m trying to see if it’s the same length as the standard M4 extension. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Do you have any recommendations on how to find out if you are getting a gen 1 or gen 2 m5? I contacted arms unlimited and they basically told me they have no idea which one they are selling, that they are a warehouse only and to contact Colt. They also have a no return policy on firearms so I can’t roll the dice and take a chance. I am wanting only the gen 2 since it has a bolt stop and the gen 1 does not.
Their mid-length carbine, CR6960, is one of their lowest sellers from what I understand. It just may not make sense for them to modify the engineering if the sales aren't going to be there.
Why the absolute f***, did they make it a pencil profile before the gas block, and then mid profile after ??? So dumb ! That’s literally where all the heat is generated. I hate that profile so badly. Bass ackwards x 1,000,000. It completely goes against the Socom profile progress that Colt made. So dumb. This would be worth every penny if they put the Socom profile on it.
Free Floating means there is nothing contacting the barrel outside of the receiver. I'm sure most of us here know this. I'm just saying that it's another marketing gimmick by calling it something it physically can't. The AR 15 with either direct impingement or internal gas piston can never be free floated.
@@venom762 I also see the definition of free float stating that the barrel only has one connection point to the upper receiver. Technically, the barrel is only connected at one point. The gas tube passes through the upper receiver but isn't connected to the upper receiver. Just depends on how you look at it. "A free-floating barrel is one where the barrel and stock do not touch at any point along the barrel's length. The barrel is attached to its receiver, which is attached to the stock, but the barrel does not touch any other gun parts except perhaps the front sight, which is often mounted on the barrel" It really doesn't matter to me either way.
I had wrongly assumed the M5 just added an ambi magazine release and bolt catch. No idea they put so much effort into improving it. Great video!

Been Seriously Looking Forward To This Video 😊😀 Thank You 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
the fact that colt actually supplied parts to fn is wild
Thanks for the detail and history!!
Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

I'm anxious to get it to the range and see how it does.
I'm here brother! 😄
I have a LE 6940 with the law enforcement markings and the restricted roll mark bought it new in 2011 or 2012 it’s probably my favorite colt i own
I'm a huge fan of the 6940 series. Congratulations on having an older LE marked example.

Looks a lot like a super duty upper

@@DavArroyo7242 the 6940 and CM556/M5 use the same barrel nut. The 901/CM762 has a similar barrel nut design but a different diameter.
Thank You for the response, I assume that the barrel wrench from one will not work on the other???
Thanks for showing this info
Thanks for the video
Thank you for stopping by.
I prefer the look of the 6940 just because it's built like a tank. I'm sure this rifle is a great shooter.
I have a 6940 upper,very accurate.Where can I get a barrel nut wrench?
Brownells was the only place that I have seen with them recently. But, I believe the guy who provided them to Brownells has retired.

Are the Bolt Carrier Groups interchangeable between the M4s and M5s?
Good info!
Thank you for stopping by.
Is there a hole for a roll pin on the stripped m556 upper, above where the charging handle sits, at the rear of the top, of the upper reciever?
I will have to look. I don't recall seeing one.
Are the M5 barrels made by Rosco like the other models?
Yes. At that price I’d buy something like a Geissele Super Duty or the DDM4. You can look at the LE6920 Socom and it has a true Colt heavy barrel but is not free floated.

And one more dimension I would like to request is the length from the rear of the extension to the rear shoulder of the barrel extension. Thank you!

About all that you can do is contact them and see if they will look before you make a purchase. Good luck!
I have to wonder why they haven't made this with a mid-length gas system. Its a superior way to do it imho.
Otherwise, I love the innovation.

And yet another dumb barrel profile from colt
You'd think by now they'd at least flip it around and have the heavy portion BEHIND the gas block😂 sheesh
Its still not a free float barrel, as long as there's a gas tube it will never be. It's a free float handguard just like other companies have.
I guess it depends on which definition of 'free float' that you use.
