One of my friends has two Seiko 5 watches, one of them he bought 50 years ago when he got married and has used daily. He was told it was "a watch for life" but didn't believe the salesman. He maintains properties and despite falling off a roof twice and injuring himself seriously - his daily Seiko has never needed a service. He has now got concerned that since the second fall where he landed on the left arm, - it loses 2 minutes per week. About 17 seconds a day!! That's what I call reliable.
Very interesting take on watches. Frankly speaking, it is easy to get tired of countless identical channels that only restate the specs and say nothing new on the subject matter. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Finally a watch review by someone with significant technical knowledge and who doesn't go for the bling often associated with TH-camrs! Subscribed and looking forward to more interesting reviews. Now to look (just found) for a review you performed as requested by Charles - of the Oris 400.
So true about the mechanisms being poorly regulated from the factory. I regulated my srpd39k1 over a few days with micro adjustments of the regulator and measuring over a 24hour period and recently got it to 5 secs per day which I think is great for a watch that cost £150 and looks fab
I thoroughly enjoyed this insight. I had to rewind the clip in a few places to fully understand and appreciate the explanation of the angles and comparisons to other Swiss movements. Thank you for taking the time to make the video.
Thank you for the very informative video. It's difficult to know where to start regulating a 4R36 as the reading can differ so much in different positions. I have found that correcting the beat error and wearing for a week and see how the movement is performing. Then adjust it forward or backwards the required amount. It may be necessary to fine adjust in another week but usually you'll get your 4R36 to about 20 seconds a week. I think every 4R36 behaves differently and is worn differently, so a few weeks of monitoring seems to work best.
Thanks for the review! I just purchased this watch after your review. I got it for 231 Euro at the airport, and no, it was not an impulse buy :) This is my 3rd Seiko in 30 years, and they all still work; my first Seiko was the Diver Seiko with Red and Blue bezel, and the 2nd was the Yellow tennis Seiko that was worn by Agassi cca 1996, I think. I just enjoyed them so much. I am glad to hear about the winding feature, altough I am not sure how to wind it, and how much... Thx again, Subscribed!
I have various Seiko watches with various movements in them I find them to be an ultimate tool watch. They are durable and rugged while being stylish at the same time. Also, I do like a day/date complication and put a day/date cyclops on one of them (SRPD77). I own Rolexes and Omega as other brands and they are perfect for some occasions but being a Chef, I need an everyday GADA watch for work. Seiko is it. Great vid, thanks for the technicals!! Subscribed.
Hey chef, how old is your seiko watches? Im considering to buy SRPG35K1 (4R36), I wanna have watch that can last for 10-20 years so i can give it to my son someday as a gift lol. But when he said that 7s26c has lower Amplitude which makes it more durable, i feel kinda regret to sold my seiko snk803k2 (7s26c) lol. Can u give some advice? Im still new to horology
I really like my seiko Samurais i have two of them maybe not absolutely spot on the time mark but close enough for me! Thanks for the review great job 👍
Thank you for creating this review re 4R36 Seiko movement. I own the Seiko SNK809 and just acquired the Seiko SRPD87 on impulse (25% off list, major American dept store). Having worn the SRPD87 for a week, it is dead on (a few seconds + or -). These two movements are “tanks” and Seiko’s attention to detail and finish are unequaled.
Just got my first watch, a SRPK07K1, about a week ago, and it's perfect. Off by +2 to +5 seconds a day, and perfectly aligned bezel. Very interesting to hear some insights about the movement inside. While I hope it lasts for a long time, I think these should be relatively cheap to service or even replace altogether also.
Great..! Thanks for the info, I have 3 Seiko watches with that movement and at least one microbrand with the "nh" variation, and a 6r21 Seiko with 3 subdials for power reserve and day / date. Love them all ! New subscriber!
I have 2 of these watch models. One watch is - 1 second per day. The other is -15 seconds a day. Drives me mad. But like you said, it is an easy adjustment.
on the 4r36 manual seiko says that when you set the time you have to move the minute marker back first and then foward to adjust the time. Is that ruining the mechanical parts or its no big deal since it has hacking ? thanks in advance
Hacking has nothing to do with that. It's just to make sure the gears don't settle differently when the watch is set and you push the crown back in. Setting the watch always involves some friction sliding between the gears independently from the direction. However backwards turning is contrary to the usual direction in which the gears are working and thus are matching each other. Just don't do it more often than is necessary to avoid excessive wear on the parts.
I'm fairly new to watch collecting and this was my first automatic watch. Mine seems to run + or - 2 seconds per day, every day. Is this normal or have I found a gem? Some days if I leave it face up it will speed up like 15 secs a day but if I leave it crown down on its side or just wear it, it's usually + or - 2ish seconds
Excellent information on 4R36 movement. I have a Seiko 4R36-08L0 movement watch that is my daily time keeper but notoriously inaccurate. It slows down couple of minutes every 24 hour. Can this be fixed? Thanks.
As many have said. Great video. Very interesting and better than your average tuber watch review. Would love to see more content. Subscribed immediately. Question… the 4r36 can’t be over-wound by hand. How does that work?
Just wondering if it's better to fully wind and have high amplitude or not quite crank them up to full power to lower the amplitude ? or would it not even make a difference ? Thanks.
They where designed to wind them self up during regular usage. If you wear the watch just sporadically it's best to just give it enough wind for it to start. Normal wearing will do the rest.
Thanks for the great video--is nice to learn a little. Quick question: is it possible to over wind a 4R36? What is the ideal number of crown turns to wind? Thanks in advance, cheers.
Yes it is possible. The barrel of the main spring guards against that by allowing it to slip against the barrels outer wall. You should feel it when attentive when winding it as increased resistance on the winding crown. However this should be avoided. It will accelerate the wear of the winding system. BTW. This is the reason why automatic watch winders should be avoided.
Hey thanks for your detailed review! I ordered my first Seiko 4r36 automatic watch. Does it damage the watch if you wind it up manually on the crown in the evening, although the watch is still running, in order to increase the power reserve?
It doesn't damage it per so. However it is increasing unnecessarily the wear of the mechanism. Avoid it if you want to prolog the life of the mechanism.
I simply enjoy winding my watch. It’s like a connection to it. Would you recommend not winding the watch unless it’s fully stopped? Or is it completely okay to hand wind every other day or so? I’ve definitely heard both sides of the argument so I’m still unsure. LOL Thanks in advance.
Yes it does. When the movement is new it will be even some hours more. With age it tends to decrease. However 40 is certainly a lower limit that's not undercut.
Interesting pro insight. Where can i read the seiko announment on 7s26 low amplitude? I own two 7s26 from 2004 Ti Samurai. Apart from the case, i don't enjoy the watch. Thanks.
I wish there were more people on the high street with an eye for fixing otomatic watches. thier are only a few old school jewellers who know someone else who repairs automatic movements nowadays. l suppose the golden age of innovation and watch makers was when everyone carried pocket watch.
Should a watch need to be repaired when sent from a factory brand new or should it's quality be checked before it leaves. And should a brand like say Seiko, stock parts for watches it sells beyond 10 years, like all the Swiss do. Japanese put out "some" good products but whereas Swiss stands for quality more often than not, Japan does not always stand for quality. Seiko should take videos like this as a way to up there game. Investing so much in marketing and not enough in quality control, results in problems like misaligned chapter rings, which are unacceptable for a brand that claims to produce such high quality watches
fix your bezzle Bucko. I bought my King Turtle and love it. +2 secs/day bezzle up but seems to do better when I wear it. And miraculously, the Chapter ring and Bezzle pointer all line up perfectly.
Hello. I do not speak foreign languages. but I understand that you are good with mechanisms. Please answer, is 4r36 a good mechanism? I was going to buy a Seiko srpg39, and there is just such a mechanism. Thanks. (message written through a translator)
Don’t know if my messages keep getting erased. Can you PLEASE help me. I have a new San Martin watch with Nh36.but running 20 Second slow and it’s kind of aggravating me a lot. No watchmakers in my area to do this kind of thing. If I send you the watch would you take care of that for me and make the time keeping more accurate. Of course I would pay you. I really would like you to do this for me please thank you so much

My 1993 Seiko 5 looses 1 minute a week. I’ve never serviced it and it’s still my daily.
Very interesting take on watches. Frankly speaking, it is easy to get tired of countless identical channels that only restate the specs and say nothing new on the subject matter. Thank you for sharing your experience!
He is pro. The rest are just paid by TH-cam for repeating marketing propaganda.
Thank you for this in-depth review of the 4R36. It's always nice to hear what a professional watchmaker has to say about a movement.

More technically detailed watch videos please, like this and the overview of Oris's 400 Calibre. It's a niche not filled by other TH-cam channels.
Was about to pull the trigger on a tt1 aquis but simply couldn't find enough info on it

Glad to hear you fixed it

Good point, thank you for your feedback!
I agree
Thanks a lot for the in depth review. 10 minutes..well spent
Glad you liked it

Fantastic detailed review. Most appreciated. Thank you.
Enjoyed this video very much. Great technical explanations.
Great content very informative I own a lot of watches that are either seiko or seiko powered and never really knew much about them

My 4R36 slow down 1 minute per day. Over 3 day it slow down 3-4 minutes. Is this common?

@@bernardomotard it’s actually close to 1 second a day lol
Do you know if 4R35 and 4R36 movements have plastic parts?
They have plenty of them in the day/date mechanism.
Excellent information on 4R36 movement. I have a Seiko 4R36-08L0 movement watch that is my daily time keeper but notoriously inaccurate. It slows down couple of minutes every 24 hour. Can this be fixed? Thanks.
It is possible to get this fixed, though it would likely require a visit to a watchmaker

yes

Hi can you please tell my why my seiko SRPD wont manual winding?
Because the mechanism there is the older precursor 4R26 - which just doesn't. Swap it for a NH36 from ali if it bothers you.

In terms of value for money it is certainly the best currently on the market.
Very interesting video. Thank you! Subcribing.
I'm guessing your review also applies to the 4R35 as well?
The 4R35 and 4R36 are essentially the same, with the exception that the latter has a day/date window and the former does not
Thank you! Very interesting indeed. May I ask: what were you wearing on your other wrist?
He's wearing an Apple watch on the other wrist
