    I noticed this when it came out. Erin you are dead on. Here is the issue. These $300 speaker with a sub with a crossover built in... properly set up of courrse will walk all over most multi K studio monitors at moderate volume. Att studio engineers.....THIS is the new NS-10 only it actually sounds great too. Pass this speaker up at your peril. Erin you have big ones. I am impressed once again with your honesty. Given their pedigree I am not suprized. The era of speaker BS is over thanks to you.

    Kali keep knocking out great performance speakers for very little money. I know a lot of people use desktop sized speakers as main speakers that do not take a lot of space. Some of the better ones are worthy of placement on stands in a good room. The close driver spacing ensures better xover integration than a 6" 2-way. In fact I'm listening to a pair with 4" woofers now as mains, no problem for my usual listening levels.
    Thanks for another informative review Erin!

  • @marcosvictor4935
    @marcosvictor4935 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    Take note that this situation with the sub is pretty much standard in the studio industry, you will also get subwoofers with integrated speaker management systems from Genelec, Neumann, and yes even subs from companies like Presonus will have inputs and internally apply crossovers to separate outputs that would go to your "satelite" speakers. I like Genelec's system a lot since it allows for many speakers to be managed by a single subwoofer, just, it's quite expensive...

    Excellent. Right now I have a pair of Swan M200MKII speakers on my desk; I actually have two pairs because some of the IO didn't work on the first pair so they sent me another pair for free, which was nice. The first pair is now a Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen. They were also $300 per pair (not counting the freebies). I'm fairly satisfied with them, but am curious to explore other options... they are slightly large, even with my large desk, especially since I have a multimonitor setup. One of my monitors blocks the tweeter, and there's no good way to remedy that.
    Maybe I'll do a size comparison and pick these up. $300 is about the limit for what I'll spend on desktop speakers, since I greatly prefer headphones, and already have my HD800s for that.

Also, garage usually means unbalanced consumer audio sources, so that would have to be taken care of as well. And you need a monitor controller or other form of volume control.

      @PileOfEmptyTapes the 3 way will be able to play louder while remaining low in distortion due to the music being split between 3 drivers. There will also be a better off-axis response. If you're going for cheap and loud, get something like a pair of Alto TS408's for $500. They can put out 130db with 1000w rms each. If you're not throwing a party or trying to project beyond the garage, the Kali's are an excellent choice for quality sound that goes deep

    Well you liked the Genelec 8331As, right? I'd call them desktop speakers as well. And I personally enjoyed the Falcon Acoustics Q7 gold badge (like LS3/5a but not as bloated bass). And there are things like Piega wireless 301 (maybe useful as desktop speaker? dunno) and I imagine Buchardt's A10 also fits on the desk. All of them for a higher price than these Kali speakers, no doubt.

I was definitely not about to blow 3 months' wages on some 8331As for this purpose when I don't even have speakers of this caliber at home, heck, I thought a pair of KH80s was decadent! Here's the thing though, for only $60 more (at regular pricing) you can get the LP-6 6.5" woofer studio monitors that extend down to 39 Hz! I actually got my LP-6 v.2 for $280 from Musician's Friend (Guitar Center) after they effed up my order so badly that it was just comical. It took about 4 calls to straighten them out, but the final rep that I reached was empathetic and skilled in this art of making good on a bad thing.
    I think the only reason these should be a consideration is if you are that desperately limited on desk space. I cannot see that ever being a factor because my tiny little country farm table is only 42" W x 26" D and it still serves as my DAW workstation. I have my 2nd reference little speakers sitting on top (crappy full range 4" JVC home stereo speakers) and my 2nd reference se Monsoon flat panel planar computer speakers (4.75" W) tuck right in between my Kali monitors.

    Enjoyed the review -- thanks for doing this. For general desktop audio -- not studio work -- would you recommend something like this over, say, a pair of Neumi Silk plus a little class-D amp? Eyeballing the charts it seems like a pretty close race with both setups on-axis response mostly within a similar +/- 5db band.

  • @PileOfEmptyTapes
    @PileOfEmptyTapes 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I wonder why they don't cross over the tweeter somewhat lower, it's sitting there unimpressed (as they usually do) while the woofer is screaming for help at high levels before the limiter kicks in. Must have very poor electrical nonlinearity, maybe an Al voice coil former at work? That seems to be something characteristic for JBL and Kali woofers in general, but on this 4" it's particularly obvious. Yeah I know, the woofer still is the weak link on KH80s...
    Otherwise, yes, these LP-UNFs would have been a prime candidate when I was last looking for good office speakers around 200, maybe 300€. Just not a whole lot of choice, or rather what's there usually has some glaring faults. Eventually settled on some EVE SC203s plus measurement and EQ (their treble is a bit uneven and they roll off quite early and steeply to preserve output level, which was not a concern since I can't listen very loud there anyway). Now I have good sound and no hiss.

    • @PileOfEmptyTapes
      @PileOfEmptyTapes 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would depend on how loud you're listening, I guess. Keep in mind that the iLoud Micros will progressively throttle back the low end at higher levels in order to keep the little 3" woofer within safe limits (Hoffmann's Iron Law: small - deep - loud, pick any two). One guy who had them said he found that a bit irritating for music, while gaming was generally fine.

    • @PileOfEmptyTapes
      @PileOfEmptyTapes 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AXYZE If you have an external sub+crossover to reduce low-frequency loading on your mains, the iLouds should be just about perfect. (There's always bodgery like EQing down the bass on the source and turning up the sub in return, too.) Assuming you can deal with a bit of hiss, that is. They might even work out for you without a sub, as almost fullrange extension at low levels basically is their most notable party trick.
      Note that iLoud Micros have unbalanced inputs only, while the Kalis can also accept balanced signals e.g. from an audio interface (and given that the power-supply seems to have a 3-pin IEC power connector, that may also be the better choice if you want to stay out of trouble with ground loops).

    • @AXYZE
      @AXYZE 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PileOfEmptyTapes I saw that Presonus Sub 8 BT has regulated high pass filter instead of just passthrough so I could make crossover on like 90hz and iLouds would have a lot easier job to do.
      Do you think that high pass filter would help just a little or a lot? Or maybe it wont help and I should save 50% by going with Edifier T5 that has just passthrough and low pass filter? Low-medium listening levels. I know for high volumes it would help a lot.

    • @PileOfEmptyTapes
      @PileOfEmptyTapes 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AXYZE Speaking of Edifier, have you seen the measurements of a newer sample of their MR4s? Those looked much closer to spec. These would be another good candidate if you're getting a sub anyway, and it looks like they should integrate fairly well with a LPF + passthrough sub like their T5 (as one would hope).
      Note that in case of the Sub8 BT, I'd want to have a balanced connection between on the input side at least.
      In any setup with a sub, budget on a measurement mic if you don't have already one, and if it's just a UMIK-1.
      So...
      MR4 $100
      T5 $150ish if memory serves?
      UMIK-1 $79
      Desk stands if required for ear height $?? (I've never had speakers standing directly on a desk sound particularly good; in the office I've actually taken the $0 approach by recruiting some old cardboard boxes, stacks of fleamarket grade paperback books would also work)

      Erin mentions it in the written review:
      " Kali informed me that the narrow dip ~200Hz is intentional and was done because variation in the mfg process can sometimes result in the cabinet having a resonant peak there so they opted for playing it safe and implementing a filter to mitigate it. In some cases if the cabinet is fine you’ll wind up with this narrow-Q dip here as I did. If the cabinet does have a resonance then it the dip will not be there and instead be more flat through this region. Is it audible? I didn’t notice it. But, as always YMMV."
      I guess if you're really fussy about this, you need to measure and EQ as usual.
      The trusty midbass bump is an old trick to make speakers sound bigger than they are, subjectively making up for a lack in really deep bass. As driver excursion for a given level goes up with 1/f^4, bumping relatively easy frequencies and rolling off the low end makes sense in the interest of retaining maximum output level.
