Not only does Paul Sun-Hyung Lee sound completely different from Mr. Kim, he's only 46 years old, much younger than the character. (I think Appa's gravestone tells us he was born in 1960, which would put him in his late 50s.) He's true-blue Korean-born, though, so even though he's shaken the accent pretty thoroughly, he probably grew up with it.
Finding, and watching Kim's Convenience during 'lockdown' was one of the few good things to come out of this Pandemic. The actors creation, and portrayal of their characters puts a smile on my face in every single episode. Ins Choi and cast, thank you for bringing this to us....and it's Canadian!
Slowly I forgot that the characters are Korean Canadian, and they just became people, which suggests to me that I simply connected to them as fellow Earthlings.
She’s a really good interviewer. Insightful, interested in her subjects, expressive...and great knitting together of a three way conversation. And I love Kim’s C!
As a Korean American immigrant, I can so relate to this Netflix series! The accent of Paul's character is spot on. Currently binge watching season 4. Thank you Kim's C. crew for representing our peeps!
You know you've succeeded with a show when it's relatable to humanity in general, regardless of ethnicity. The cultural aspect is interesting, but I soon forgot their accents or that they were Korean. The show has so much heart.
Found it silly at first, then once you start analysing content and get to know the characters you soon realize that this true to life replica hits home with a very convincing punch. The casting is bang on and reflects Toronto's etchnic divesity. The characters are so likable you hope to meet them on the street one day and start asking quesrions. Janet the daughter is pivotal in giving most plots a sense of authencity. Her character is so on the mark in reflecting issues that exist between young adults and their parents. A very well done "tour de force " in deflecting the stereo type argument. Lookingng SO SO forward to season 3. Gator
One of the best shows ever made.. Love the entire cast, the writing, comedy etc.. A show that makes me proud to be a Canadian and very happy to see on TV :)
Love the show! I live in Phoenix,AZ. Glad to see this on TH-cam instead of listening to this interview on the radio because I would NEVER believe that this was Paul "Appa" speaking.
It's really awkward listening to Appa talking like that. He's one of my favorite characters! And about the show, I SERIOUSLY LOVE IT! There are a view parts that aren't Korean(probably Chinese or Japanese) but it's still super fun. Thank you SO MUCH guys for making this show shine!
Nice to see someone from your past succeed. Wishing you all the best Ins....I will never forget hearing you sing for the first time @ VP...walking down the music hall like WHO IS THAT!?!?!? I couldn't be happier for you
Thank you for the show guys We love it and it will always remind me of my family from a better times the best times thank you guys again ❤ 8f i could afford it i would have this show go on for 50 more seasons
so glad I discovered Kim's Convenience. It could not be more 180° from Flowers but I love them both. Love the whole cast, can't say I have a favorite character because I love them all. Please keep up the good work, and keep it fresh.
Oddly enough, while CBC renewed the show through to season 6, Ins Choi and Kevin White decided to move on causing the show to prematurely end with season 5. Normally, things are the other way around with creators being disappointed by having their shows cancelled by networks. Here, these creators chose to cancel their own show. Heartbreaking, really.
I'm here because of the sad news... I hope they get new writers soon and have the actors contribute in writing the 6th season, just to do the show justice and a proper goodbye to the fans who were able to relate. Please get a season 6th, at least that. 🙏
The way Paul articulates how Kim's Convenience connected to every fiber of his being is amazing. Being an Asian American with immigrant parents I couldn't agree with him more. LOL to the comments about Paul's or Jean Yoon's accents not being their actual accents; it is kind of a let down. But I suspected they weren't real because that's wayyy too much English for a non-native English speaker, even for acting haha.
I think Paul put the show perfectly. It's a show that doesn't sound like it'll be interesting but there are just too many moments written into the story that's at Fresh Prince level.
Love this show, and the young Lady that plays their daughter is just so amazing and her face gives so much character. If she was covered wit Ice cream I would eat all of it. Yummm!
Jonathan Dexter Do you know she's the sister to that North Korean woman soldier from the movie "The Interview" if you haven't watched it, go watch it 🤣🤣 it's funny.
I’m Korean and just started watching this show on Netflix, it’s soooo hilarious and demonstrates Korean family culture so well, so warm and my parents are so much like Mrs Kim and Appa! Lol
I would say this represents our culture so well. I really love this show too ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ But Episode of Nayoung(나영) who was the cousin, I wouldn't say she is the stereotype of Korean girl.
Actually they look like 80's korean family. Nowadays most korean dont act like that. but I think this show so funny. because they show us how immigrant families live.
any korean could tell his accent and his wifes accent were fake. yes they used the general korean accent, however you could easily tell with long sentences their accents weren't genuine
If you listened to the full interview you would know that he talks about the accent not being the "authentic" Korean accent and he pulls back on it for clarity sake.
I watched 10 mins of this show and thought hmm that accent sounds kinda wrong. I bet he’s North American ! It feels kind of weird that he puts on this accent throughout the series, is that okay? Why didn’t they get a Korean?
"Trthful"??!?! "Authetntic"?!!?? I don't have to go to Toronto know that whites make up but 5% of the gen pop and that95 or so of the couples pop. are interracial. Give it -- the multiculturalism utopia shoving down the throat -- a break for TWO mins. Yea, sooo "realistic" & a Korean experience "that everyone can relate to, Ins Choi. Uh huh ...Recent miidle-aged & senior Korean immigrants at an English-sermon church side by side w/ black, Hispanics, etc. Give. It. A. Rest. Stop insulting semi-intelligent ppl's intelligence. It's a joke -- but not the kind you're hoping for. The writing/dialogue is another deeply grating/unrealistic aspect. Korean ppl (and ppl in general) don't talk like that, It's simply "My mom/dad said..."; and "I promised my mom/dad I would..." Not "My umma/appa said..."; and "I promised my umma/appa I'd..." If there's a couple positives I can point to, the Kimchi and Mr. Chin characters are cool (though the latter's forced, over-the-top accent is also inconsistent & extremely grating, but it's the least extremely grating).
I watched the entire series before seeing this, so Appa's voice came as quite the shock! Haha.
Emilie West riightt??!!
LOL yeah the korean accent that they have on the show isn't completely accurate because they have such fluent english!
According to Wiki, he came when he was 3 months old, so no, there was no accent to shake off.
I find the Korean accent too exaggerated to believe, at least for me. Nevertheless, someone has to do it to make it work.
Finding, and watching Kim's Convenience during 'lockdown' was one of the few good things to come out of this Pandemic. The actors creation, and portrayal of their characters puts a smile on my face in every single episode. Ins Choi and cast, thank you for bringing this to us....and it's Canadian!
Appa is one of my favorite characters on the show.
I have just finished the show, appa’s voice sneak attack. What a great actor he is.

I love Kim's Convenience. Brilliant. Genius. About family, faith and love....and blesses us with laughter.
Hilarious show. One of the best things on TV right now. I hope they have a long run, because it's so much fun to re-watch all the episodes.
My wife and I discovered K's C on Netflix and are passing links along to our friends and family. We love the concept and the actors. What a pleasure!
Awesome show! Paul Sun-Hyung Lee is fantastic!
His voice is just "GREAT" I wanna hear his voice all day long !

I love Paul... He is Appa for me forever. I want to hug him so bad and hear his voice all day. I love him so much
This show got me through the pandemic, absolutely love it and continue to rewatch it once a year
so glad I discovered Kim's Convenience. It could not be more 180° from Flowers but I love them both. Love the whole cast, can't say I have a favorite character because I love them all. Please keep up the good work, and keep it fresh.
Every single time Paul speaks on these interviews its always very insightful.
I just started watching this show and it’s becoming a great show.
Oddly enough, while CBC renewed the show through to season 6, Ins Choi and Kevin White decided to move on causing the show to prematurely end with season 5. Heartbreaking, really.
love the show! keep it going! #kimsconvenience
I'm so sad his accent isn't real
Rana Mohiuddin what did you expect? He's raised in Canada

It's called acting.

Kim s Convenience is great.
I really loved this show. Will miss it.

Love this show and the actors. The acting , writing and directing is amazing!

So many laughs and the hidden feels!
This series is one of the best I've seen :)
아빠...? 뭐야뭐야 액센트 연기한거였어? 영혼이 실린 연기였다 ㄷㄷ
I need appa's voice all the time 🤣
he looks like a daddy bear ...and u wanna hug it .
So true! What a daddy
Can't wait to watch this all season~
Show's amazing!
We miss you :-)
I love that show

I love this show .
Best show ever. Seinfeld on steroids.
He sounds so much younger than on the show 😂
I think Paul put the show perfectly. It's a show that doesn't sound like it'll be interesting but there are just too many moments written into the story that's at Fresh Prince level.
Kim’s is the King of Kensington of today. Wonderful humour and human touch.
Honestly, such an Amazing show!
Great Interview, glad I can learn about the Background and formation of this gem 👌🏿
Oh, I just love Mr Kim's character 💚 He is so funny. 😆😆😆
I don't know if it's just me, but I think Paul sounds like RDJ.
Ok, see you!
She got excited when "groceries" are said
Hahahaha
Why are you cancelling this show? It's wonderful. So different than other shows. I really have enjoyed it immensely. Please reconsider.
Awesome ! from Korea.
Appa is the king of the screen.
Is Hilarious! Season #6, post pandemic! don't waste it! Kudos to all these Asian Maple leaf artists.
... Appa?
Could be the conviniece store across from Broadview Station that I used to go to .
Is that store real?
조윤호 they used a real store and modified the outside to make the show, could be the store you went to
Sadly, kinda agree with her. Can't wait for this!! :)
love Paul!
How not to end a series professionally
Appa's english is fine 🤣🤣🤣
I love 아빠!!
Your accent is bang on
Ins Convenience!
Coner gas + Mr.kim the Korean = convinience store.
OMG...what happened to Appa's accent 😁
Is this drama popular in Canada?
Heck yes.
Very popular!
Omg Appa English is so fluently....
anyone else recognise Candy
His regular accent sounds like an overweight white guy lol
holy crap i did not expect that 2:00
I’m not used to hear appa’s voice like that
Love this show, and the young Lady that plays their daughter is just so amazing and her face gives so much character. If she was covered wit Ice cream I would eat all of it. Yummm!
Jonathan Dexter Do you know she's the sister to that North Korean woman soldier from the movie "The Interview" if you haven't watched it, go watch it 🤣🤣 it's funny.
I agree. Her facial expressions are the best.
That last bit about ice cream is really creepy and makes you sound like a serial killer. Chill out.
Tigerbelly bobby Lee. Podcast. Los Angeles comedian. Korean and Mexican wife.. Latino asians.
Trailer and clips look promising. .here's hoping.
Today, Korea town downtown Los Angeles , you see Latinos , asians all working hard. Strange no black Americans ?
APPA! YOU INGRIS IS GOOOD!
I'm not sure why they made him do that accent.. I'm not sure how I feel about it either
Same reason other actors are told to do accents in shows. Sense of authenticity for those who can't see through / are helped immersed by the accent.
"do you love the jejus"
I saw him on a panel CBC open House Sept 30th . Because News. the real Kims convience would have the drug element
I wonder what people in Korea think of this show?
Aman Basanti I want to recommend it to my Korean friend, I want to know what she thinks... Especially the accent lol
I’m Korean and just started watching this show on Netflix, it’s soooo hilarious and demonstrates Korean family culture so well, so warm and my parents are so much like Mrs Kim and Appa! Lol

and nayoung didnt look like korean girl. I think she is japanese. she acts like chilidsh.
Not suprise me by the accent given that he grew up in Canada. I just didn’t that to be his voice
any korean could tell his accent and his wifes accent were fake. yes they used the general korean accent, however you could easily tell with long sentences their accents weren't genuine

Wow, Appa does speak decent real English!!
wow appa, totally different here, huh?
It’s weird to see a boomer aged asian man this fluent lol #Relateable
Good thing this is shot in wide screen.
appa- thats not his voice- i - no... why he... (i'm kidding)
Smh, my ears have been deceived.
you know what?? kim's family can't speak korean.......
Vitamin D seriously? Oh my
