    The hobo spider might be one of the most feared spiders in North America, but how dangerous is it really? Today I'm testing the bite of the hobo spider, to find out if they're really all they're cracked up to be.

    Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!
    For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
    1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
    2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
    3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
    4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

      I heard that the desert recluse has a vemonus bite like that of a brown relcuse, tho I am not sure on that, a few months back I was bitten by a brown reluse spider and went through all of its fine glory and still dealing with bite damage as of yet, The desert recluse is native to southern California, and yet the brown recluse isn't, however it has been well documented that the one that had nailed me was a brown recluse in San Diego east county of California. Anyways I like to know if the southern desert recluse is just as damaging as the brown recluse spider. Have you done a video on that one yet?

      Many studies done here in AUS, suggest that essentially every case of necrosis resulting from white tail spider bites during the study period were caused by bacteria gathering at the base of their fangs found commonly on other spiders they commonly eat as well as the prey those spiders eat. Some people are more sensitive than others to a hobo spider bite. The few times I've been bit the wound was a hole about the size of a pencil eraser, while my neighbor got bit and the hole on his stomach was about the size of a golf ball and about five inches of rotting skin surrounding it.

      @Shadowman
      Except that’s not how it works, the hobo spider doesn’t have any necrotic properties in its venom so therefore whether you are more sensitive or not is irrelevant, sensitivity to a bite isn’t suddenly going to change the chemical makeup of venom to become something it isn’t.

      @@MyWildBackyard It's not a myth. Some people are more sensitive than others to a hobo spider bite. The few times I've been bitten by a hobo spider the wound was a hole about the size and depth of a #2 pencil eraser that took over three weeks to heal, while when my neighbor got bit the wound and the hole in his stomach was about the size and depth of a golf ball with a about five inches of rotting skin surrounding it. I believe my own eyes before I believe someone who has never seen or experienced a serious hobo spider bite. Just because you had a mild reaction doesn't prove anything, except that you may not be sensitive or allergic to their venom. The real myth is that hobo spider bites aren't ever serious and cause necrosis in some people's skin.

    • @IrishColin
      @IrishColin หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @Shadowman
      Except it IS a myth, they DO NOT have necrotic properties in their venom so whether you are sensitive or not is completely irrelevant as to whether there would be necrotic effects like you describe. One of several things is the case here, possibility number one is that you misidentified what you were bit by, possibility two is you caused the wound by scratching at it or not cleaning it properly and the spot getting infected, possibility three is you weren’t bit by a spider at all and you or a doctor immediately jumped to that conclusion which happens all too often, possibility four is you’re lying because you believe the myth and you’re trying to propagate it thinking you’re doing the right thing when you aren’t. I’m not in any place to say which of these things is the truth but I can say it is indeed one of these things. Please do your research before spreading more fear towards something that doesn’t do what you’re saying it does. Spencer did this test to show that they don’t do what you think but his video is hardly the only evidence of this, there is zero scientific evidence that they cause necrosis and a huge body of scientific evidence that they do not.
      I know I already replied to you in another comment thread but I don’t want people being mislead by your comment so I’m going to reply here as well in case they don’t see the other one.

    • @420Khatz
      @420Khatz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yes- this exactly. I mentioned in a previous comment that I lived in a house infested with them, and would often wake up with angry, red, bullseye pattern bites all up and down my body, and usually just along one side as well. My theory is that they'd get under my covers while roaming or hunting at night, as that's the darkest place in the room, and when I'd move in my sleep in a way that threatened them, that would cause them to bite. I know it was spider bites from the double pinpricks in the centre that were exactly as far apart as spider fangs would be. However, while a couple of them got pretty nasty, none of them ever became necrotic. That to me suggests a bacteria, rather than a venom, as a venom would be much more consistent in severity...
      And sure enough- both those especially nasty bites were easily treated with copious application of neosporin and hydrogen peroxide!

      Not sure, but my non-professional guess would be that mosquitoes don’t have bits of rotting flesh on their appendage. The mosquito’s sucker is actually comprised of 6 separate parts that all have slightly different functions. There’s a sheath, a shearing pair, the actual needle part. I’d assume that as the parts are sheathed, any leftover debris is cleared. Also, mosquitoes don’t generally feed on rotting carcasses, they need a living host with pumping blood. Anyhow, that’s all just a guess. Thx for the interesting question.

    Been bitten by a Hobo spider as well. Verdict - nothing happened at all. It could have been a dry bite but I doubt it. So my theory is that some rare people are prone to having some sort of "hyper immune" response to these really harmless creatures venoms. This hyper response is causing the body to attack itself, causing necrosis. If you have diabetes or some other health issues then healing from this necrosis becomes even more difficult. Been bitten by both Recluses as I have been bitten and envenomated by both species. Aside some weird co-centric light red/pinkish rings that formed and gradually faded away again nothing happened. The Black Widow, well that another stomach painful/flu like story. The other things these people are getting are MRSA.

      Well cheirocanthium just like the hobo spiders are the victim of myths run wild. I’ve got plenty of cheirocanthium mildei that live in my house and they’re no cause for concern. The only one that you listed that CAN be bad is the recluse (loxosceles reclusa) but even then it’s rare for a bite to be bad. I don’t necessarily know if that was your point but I felt like saying this just in case, even if you know already and it wasn’t your point then maybe someone who didn’t know will see it.

    My guess is that the female hobo spider didn't inject you with its venom, but instead gave you a dry bite. I could be wrong, but what I remember hearing from somewhere is that they typically save their venom for what ever walks across their web. And if the venom doesn't naturally contain anything that causes necrosis, then I wonder if it's something that the hobo spider can pick up in the wild that lives in the venom or on the spider's fangs???

    I didn't watch the video fully sir but will eventually.. First of all, I hope you recovered from the "Hobo spider bite"... I dunno if there is even a "Treatment" that exist everywhere for it's venom... You probably have a strong immune system and circulatory system to survive with but sir I wouldn't keep testing those spiders for fear you don't get help at the right time to save you.. So please be careful. Many of us care for your safety. Also I wanted to tell you why it didn't bite at first.. "It's called the hobo spider" because of it's way to travel and although many breeds of spiders can suddenly develop a habit to travel, the hobo likes to sneak aboard much like a "Human hobo" to a train back in old days.. It probably thought it could use you for transportation so when you showed you weren't taking it anywhere on your clothes or someplace like that then it bit you in frustration for lack of travel.. I use to go to a private school while young that had books on these spiders and I only used the "Celler Spider" and "Daddy Long Legs" for feeding demos because we couldn't afford a serious venom actually getting loose and attacking school staff and or students.. At least I got to lead the class for a little while back then..

    so my question is… so if it’s a myth, does that mean everyone who’s gonna bitten by a hobo and gets their skin “necrosis”….
    Is it because they continue picking/scratching it or something else irritates the bite?
    If that were the case, then wouldn’t every bite, from any kind of spider yield the same result?
    What if they get bitten in an area they can’t reach to be able to pick or scratch at it?
    Is it simply that people are just mistaking the hobo for a lookalike who’s bite does cause necrosis? That also lives in the NW.
    Is it that some people bodies react differently to venom and maybe a hobo’s venom will cause necrosis in one person but not another?
    or is it that maybe hobo spiders at different maturities, or certain exposures, or different areas, can develop the ability to cause necrotic bite wounds?
    hard to believe it’s 100% myth.

    In England we have a few species of Eratigena with the largest being E. atrica aka the Giant House Spider or shed spider. All very similar biology and habits. They provok the most fear here in England (outside the false widows 🙄) because of the fact they very fast males very leggy and often come into people's homes as name suggests. The heavy bodied females always looked a little intimidating to me growing up and seen them subdue what was a very fired up German wasp in only a few short minutes but with multiple bites. I have made them bite me as I got older and had zero reaction .. if anything I think their fangs are not strong enough mostly. I do think they myst have a good chemical venom against small invertebrate prey insects as they make sheet type webs over sticky 'trapping' types like orb weavers. But to anything bigger especially us bigger nothing to even blink over.

    The problem with getting bit in your sleep isn't from spider aggression, but a wandering spider crawling on a person, kinda has the same affect as your friend tickling your nose with a feather - after putting shaving cream in your hand. The spider might tickle the skin, and you (in your sleep) swat at it, and the spider acts defensively. Also just moving the wrong way in your sleep can frighten the spider to the point of it's self defense. imagine it's crawling down your pant leg and you turn away from it, or toward it. Either your pants have a chance of pinning it or the bed, or the blankets. The bites on the leg at night seem to be the most common, from what I've seen, and I believe the aforementioned reasons are some of the main root causes. A spider crawling across your face at night, has a much higher capability and interest in running away from a swatting hand then biting. This is probably why you don't see anywhere near as many bites to the face as to say the legs.
    Even then - I have a funny story of my friend having to break into his basement when he was locked out of his house as a kid. He also sleeps in the basement, and apparently the seal to the "fixed" window wasn't quite so fixed, and he would wake up with multiple spiders in his bed every morning. He said he thought he was going to turn into spiderman HAHA, but he never incurred a bite, at least not a venomous one that gave me any problems. The spiders were probably some type of wolf spider, which is a very docile and smart species, with maybe some sharp fangs, but no lasting affect from a bite. You may never even know you got bit.
    (Not saying anything like I'm disagreeing, i'll happily shut down a hobo spider gave me a bite in my sleep and it decayed my skin argument anyday.)

    I've read that these bites can cause necrotic wounds, yet many, like yourself indicate this isn't true. I've read that bites by the Australian Atrax spider can be deadly--but the severity of the bite is sex-linked. I believe it was the female that was determined to be deadly, and male not so dangerous. Your Hobo Spider in this video is clearly a male--have you tried this with a female?

    It's not that they seek you out just to bite you in your sleep- rather, they end up under your covers while hunting after being accidentally trapped in your house, and when you move in your sleep in a way that threatens them, they *will* bite.
    I used to live in a house that was infested with them (especially in the rooms nobody used, like the one I moved into as my bedroom) and I would wake up *way* too often with nasty, angry, bullseye pattern bites all up and down my body. They were definitely bites because in the centre was always two little dots, with the exact spacing apart as spider fangs. They never turned necrotic, though a couple of them seemed very close and likely would have, had I not taken extra good care of the bite area using neosporin and hydrogen peroxide.

It is a very small spider that I have never seen grow larger than a nickel, however I have observed them all around my house and surrounding area weaving vast cobweb mazes which made me think of a widow spider at first. Upon closer visual inspection they possess a cerated red stripe along the dorsal-side of their abdomen while the rest of their body is a pale, yet bright orange colour. I have attempted my own research but there is very little known about these spiders.
