Came back to this great how-to video after 3 years. It is a pleasure to watch Matt do this work..and make it look easy. I remember it but not sure if I said I would stop commenting? I get mad sometimes but pretty good at controlling myself. thanks for the positive comment.
Matt, you addressed my every concern about tacking my own headliner, now I can do it with full confidence, excellent step by step video, I dig tour choice in music also, I'm a big Tool fan. Rock on.
Awesome, as long as it helps one person it was worth it and yes Tool is the only band that has never made a song I disliked!!! Thanks for watching and commenting, your ok in my book.....
I think you did a great job all around. I am from Kentucky and now live in Tennessee. I just received a 1999 Beetle with a terrible headliner and you make it look doable for a person to do. I hope my husband and I are able to follow your directions well. Thank you for posting this wish us luck.
Dude that turned out awesome. I was hoping I could do this myself, but after watching this, I feel like I need to pay a professional. I don't think I could do this by myself. Thanks so much for the very informative video.
Very well done. I like the care you take. Video convinced me to pull the liner myself and take it somewhere. Probably cheaper than 3 pieces of liner lol. Once it's done, I'm gonna pierce it and install little LEDs.
matt1989cars Dude, that is friggin awesome! Definitely doing it. Two questions. Do I need special liner or can I just push an awl through standard foam backed liner? I’m guessing these are just the fairy lights you can get on amazon. Do I need to do anything special to convert them to 12 volt?
@@robertgreenfield9051 Oh and I used a huge upholstery needle to punch the hole carefully then taped/hot glued it in place on back of the headliner shell. Left plenty hanging out the face of the headliner then trimmed them short.
I finally did this to my beetle, I used 3m headliner spray, it seems to have worked good. I had a few issues getting it smooth and looking good. The hardest part was putting it back in and getting the sun visor and rear view mirror back on ,took some jostling to get it all back on. this video really helped me, thanks!
+Barry Perkins Great and please let the others on here know if it stays good with the 3M spray and if you live in a hot area or not. Thanks for the view and comments!
Thanks Matt, you made this look easy and something the "average Joe" might be able to do! I'm going to try to do mine before the end of the month and will let you know how it comes out.

You are probably one of the best instructors on stuff like this. Thanks so much... just wondering if I don't have a spray gun can I use brush on rubber cement...you know coat one surface then the second surface and they don't stick until pressed together. Do you have a phone number if I reach a snag? I have a 2000 yellow beetle that I love and it needs interior roof and sunroof done...any ideas about the sunroof too? Brenda
Probably the best how-to video I've seen on TH-cam...If I lived in TN I'd definitely visit your shop...Matt do you have a video on doing the same with a sunroof?
thank you and I don't have a video about the sunroof, but the headliner itself comes out about the same way. now covering the slider over sunroof can be harder because most vehicles you gave to remove the whole sunroof glass and all.
+matt1989cars I have a question, I am not in the business of putting headliners on so I don't need a whole gallon of adhesive, I cannot justify the cost of spending that much on a gallon of adhesive, can you suggest a cheap adhesive I can use for one job? Thanks
+Barry Perkins Hey, I knew that would be a problem for most, but I buy the glue in 5 gallon drums at about 100 bucks, but you can buy 1 gallon for around $25, you will still need a cheap spray gun and air compressor though. I see a lot of people use spray can adhesives and the headliner usually comes back down with time and heat, so I would hate to see people waste their time with spray cans. If you do try a spray can, find a good webby spray and spray both sides letting them dry good before contact. Hope all goes well!
matt1989cars I can buy one gallon of the adhesive you use in your video for $25? I have not been able to find that, I have seen it for around 50. I do have a spray gun and compressor. I was hoping to find maybe a couple cans of good adhesive for under 20 bucks. Or maybe something I can brush on?
Hi matt, what is the color that you used to do this? Is it Med Quartz? I saw the asterisk on the sample but just want to make sure. Awesome job by the way!! love your videos!
Can you tell what the difference is between the weldwood contact cement & contact adhesive is? Will both do the same job for a headliner install? Home depo & Lowe’s only carry the weldwood contact cement. And not the contacted adhesive... Thanks Ray..
Good job, man. I got an 01 Beetle TDI that the interior is falling apart in, but this one has a sunroof. The vinyl door panels are coming off, too. What's it run to do a VW Beetle roof liner and both vinyl door panels at your place?
Got a 2000 VW Beetle for my daughter. Yellow just like that, but with a sunroof. It needs a new headliner. I wish I was talented like this and could fix it for her.
You make it look easy. Definitely a lot harder than it looks. I followed your guide but when I tried to pull off the fabric a bit to fix the alignment it ripped the foam off (only a small piece) from the fabric. I sprayed a bit more glue on it and it went through and you can see it on the other side. Any recommendations on masking that imperfection?
Ahh that's a rough one? When charging others to do this, I would have to redo the whole thing if glue bleed thru. Sorry that happened to you. Make sure the glue sprays evenly and not too heavy also.
@@charles1matt It's not perfect but better than before. I'll see if I can find a way to stain it a bit gray to make it a little less noticeable. I think I probably put too much glue on and either waited too long or not long enough (which makes it stickier?). Also that center console in the beetle headliner is pretty tough to do. This was my second attempt and cleaning up after the first attempt was pretty tough. Getting fresh glue removed turned out to be a lot more difficult than when the headliner was falling apart.
Mega great job man! i have 99 VW Beetle it has the same trouble. Could you tell me how much this repair cost? the main problem here is my location... 2000 miles away i wish you had repaired!

Great video. What fabric are you using and where can I buy it online? I bought one from amazon with a padded back but it seemed pretty thin. Also, used the 3m Adhesive spray and it dried almost immediately so I couldn't correct any mistakes and now have to start over. Going to try the glue you suggested or maybe let someone local do it.

matt1989cars great thanks, can you share where your shop is located in case it's close to where we live. If you're not in Louisiana I guess your too far away.
Hello,Matt, I am glad I came upon this video. My son has a 99 beetle that has the same problem so I needed " how to do instructions." This Video is well explained. Just one question, where can I get the material From? Thank you
I buy from a lot of different suppliers, you should be able to search "headliner material" and find somewhere to buy from. My main supplier currently is Albright supplies, but I don't know if they sell to the general public? I get the material for around $10 a yard, it shouldn't be no more then $15 retail and 2-3 yards will be enough. The glue is called weldwood contact cement and spraying it thru a paint gun is the best way to do this.
Hey Matt great video! Question??.. I want to do a custom headliner and was wondering what material you would suggest or stay away from ie: fleece, cotton, suede?? I want to use something that has a print on it or possibly go with vinyl.
Try to stay thin and lightweight, vinyl is heavy. Use normal headliner material as the cushion layer then a thin material of your choice. That means you have to glue 2 layers. Thick materials may be ok without a foamed layer first? Perforated vinyl might be a lighter choice for vinyl too. Peace
I heard your radio station say "Nashville", where are you located? I'm in Columbia and need a new headliner in my 2001 Beetle...same color as in video...and what does it cost?
Not in my book as the spray can glues I would not trust over time. Maybe a local upholster will glue the material to the board for you? I know i charge half price if someone comes to me with the board removed and plan to reinstall it themselves.
It’s me again. I can’t find the exact kind of weldwood Do you think this would work? And do you think I could get away with brushing it on? www.lowes.com/pd/dap-weldwood-off-white-contact-cement-construction-adhesive-actual-net-contents-32-fl-oz/3819177?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-pnt-_-google-_-lia-_-133-_-glue-_-3819177-_-0&store_code=2478&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhdTqBRDNARIsABsOl9_KHPr1wrGBzBcIIxUBrYdkq0pPwGHQ79N_YbpTzO18fK-N1PXDHqMaAtfXEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
I recently turned 18 and bought myself a 98 beetle. Good news is it doesn't have that many openings but my question is what if you don't have a paint gun and can't afford one? I'm a full time college student trying to make a car once destroyed new again. All issues are cosmetic so they can be fixed but I can't afford to have it done. All the plastics parts look like a mechanic touched it and even the fabric on the ceiling has oily fingerprints. Is this a job I could do on my own and could I change the fabric color?
I remember have to push the hell out of it, maybe get one side started and take a blunt tool and hammer with a light solid wack? I'm pretty sure I pushed my back into place
@@charles1matt I saw 5-year-old Saabs, where all the plastic buttons you used had no icons on them anymore. Yet, the narrative in Europe is: Look at the German, Sweedish quality, the plastic is so great (these guys turn into chemists who can judge plastic by looking and touching). But look at the Italian quality, the plastic is just terrible. Well, I have a 2000 Beetle and a 2000 Alfa 145 so I can tell how much BS it is. Also, for the same price, the Alfa is a comfortable and useful supercar compared to the Beetle.
@@goprodog4304 well that's all cars now and really everything we buy is made like garbage now a days. Electronics being one of the worst, they need to make circuit boards out of gold and silver instead of wearing it on there bodies! Stuff would last a lot longer. +matt1989cars - Matt, where you buy the glue.
tnx for this
Hi Matt, what’s the name or type of that lining material you used please,I m planning to fix my, thank you.
Mokwele Mungombe it's normal headliner material with a 3/16" foam backing
whats total cost replace headliner? I have 07 Bug and i don't have all tool to do this. Do you suggest anyone in Atlanta? Thank you
I recently turned 18 and bought myself a 98 beetle.
+Kyla Fuller Not sure of anything as good as this way, sorry.
+matt1989cars thanks I live in Ohio so idk if I'd ever be able to get out there. I will give you a call though.
+Kyla Fuller - use a paint brush, works good.
What type of headliner did you replace it with?
Aftermarket headliner material
What's the size of the fabric?
+TheVALTGirl the material comes 60inches wide and it takes about 3 yards for an average headliner.
+matt1989cars thanks 👍🏽👍🏽
How much headliner material do you need?
Apple Parts 3yards
My sunroof headliner sagged off...how to repair that?
Most vehicles you have to remove the whole sunroof to get the slide cover out through the top of the pan
For the love of god, how in the HELL did you get the rearview mirror reattached?
I remember have to push the hell out of it, maybe get one side started and take a blunt tool and hammer with a light solid wack? I'm pretty sure I pushed my back into place
Got it figured out, appreciate it man. Good to see a master at work.
+Mosin54R lol as long as we keep trying we keep learning, huh! peace and thanks for watching,
how many yards do I need?
2.5yds or 3 to be safe
Great tutorial but it didn't show how to take the mirror off? :( but great video really helped me !
Scott Brown 6:45 flat head and pop it off
Cheers mate !
ax7 awesome tunes
I wish you can do my beetle...
If you cant find Big Ass brand scissors, Giant MoFo's will work just as well.
Anyone else having trouble removing the rearview mirror? I can't get mine to budge.
Whitney Freeman pull straight down with a slight amount of force
I have a 2000 Beetle and my thing is coming way off.. Bubbles everywhere
"Quality German VW plastic". Right. Fekking shit, this car is. THX for the vid.
Lol, and Volvo is even worst!! Don't get me started on BMWs I wont touch either vehicle from the 90s for sure.
@@goprodog4304 it's like they make everything over complex just to say hey look we can make it better than you but it's really not, lol.
@@charles1matt Exactly. But it's just getting worse. I used to own a 1957 Steyr-Puch 500D :)
@@goprodog4304 well that's all cars now and really everything we buy is made like garbage now a days. Electronics being one of the worst, they need to make circuit boards out of gold and silver instead of wearing it on there bodies! Stuff would last a lot longer. We know most companies make things cheap for repeat business though. Oh well, I can keep going on and on, lol. Peace my friend,
Just paint the headliner
No thanks, but you can
matt1989cars I didn’t try it yet but I think it’s gonna be great and will save time.
I listened for about two seconds before the sh#tty soundtrack ran me off. No thank you.
Brian Weir o yeah that song sucks now, peace. o I did show every step right after that intro
