Legendary goalkeeper. Probably one of the first of the sweeper keepers. He was actually technically efficient as an outfield player. Famously once played left wing in a pre season game for Man Utd. An OM legend. Friends and I (Utd fans) once drove to Marseille from London via Geneva to pay homage to Barthez. Absolute rock for France 98 to 2006.

Concordo, portiere di livello assoluto, il rivale più insidioso di Buffon in quegli anni. Ricordo ancora la finale del 2006, Buffon e Barthez diedero vita a parate strepitose rispondendosi colpo su colpo. L'unica sfida dove Barthez perse furono i rigori, ma fu strepitoso tanto quanto Buffon in quella serata indimenticabile per noi italiani
con Joël Bats è stato il migliore che abbiamo avuto in Francia... senza di lui non avremmo mai potuto battere i nostri fratelli italiani nei Mondiali 1/4 98 e nella finale di Euro 2000... essendo un tifoso incondizionato di Buffon, che ritengo sempre il più grande da 30 anni, ho messo Casillas al numero due e Barthez al 3 anche se amavo Toldo e Neuer...

Great Golie Ive always respected him of course. In Manchester United he had trouble adapting. However, he did win FA Premier League with the Red Devils in 2000-2001. Great golie. I've always prefer Bernard Lama.. Joël Bats. As my personal french golies.
Barthez struggled after Man Utd sold Jaap Stam. Laurent Blanc was past his best by then. Barthez also won the Premiership in 2002-03 and returned to Marseille the following season replacing Vedran Runje.

Il n y a pas que ses arrêts qui étaient impressionnants. Ses dégagements au pied et à la main l étaient tout autant. Il était souvent passeur décisif!
Ce n'est pas le palmarès qui fait que Barthez est meilleur, ce sont ses arrêts. On ne va pas se mentir, Lloris est bon, mais il est inconstant et fait souvent des erreurs un peu stupides, mais il n'a pas le même jeu que Fabien, plus démonstratif et plus décisif.

If bartez have height body, so bartez well become the best goal kiper
Height is not a problem for goalkeepers, to be a legend you must consistently master every other factor: positioning, mental concentration, agility, reflexes, flexibility, handling, dominance and coming for high balls... height does not determine success. Don’t make this mistake! Barthez is one of the greatest! I definitely agree height helps, but it’s definitely not the be all or end all, it merely determines style of play as opposed to success mate.

Barthez was really better than Coupet, Coupet was great but it was never a competition between the two. The only challenge for Barthez was Lama at the beginning.

One of my biggest idol!! I first remember watching him in the 2006 World Cup highlights when the 2010 edition startet, I was 11 at the time absolute ICON of the game!
My first account of him was none other than the 1998 world cup i was about 8 or so at that time, i remember Laurent Blanc kissing his head for good fortune at the start of the match, oh boy the 1998 world cup was absolute magic.
This is rare footage in the field of the the moment the referee whistled the end of the final game of 1998 world cup , Henry rushing , screaming team-mates, and the crowed goes nuts with cameras flashes , Zidane handshaking the referee , Pires hugging the captain Deschamps , later Frank Leboeuf screaming from joy, Barthez crying blanc coming to comfort him and give him that forehead kiss of fortune but this time its a kiss of glory, absolute magic.
