Katie Turner i felt the same the first time i ran into Heilung. I was listening to a shamanistic/drums mix on spotify as I love the sound of war drum music. Next thing you know Alfadhirhaiti comes on and at first it was off putting. I kept thinking about that strange but intriguing song i had ran into during the next week. Next thing you know I craved to hear again and was instantly hooked. This music brings me closer to the gods.
True story, i'm a fat P.O.S (300 + pounds) trying to lose weight, and i've been using this song on repeat to my daily jogging routine, the drum beat is perfect for my pace lol. Thanks Heilung for the motivation. :)
The more I listen to Heilung's "weirder" songs, the more I realize where Chrisitans’ idea of what makes something sound "demonic" came from. Christians have been trying to associate pagans with Satan and demon worship since the very beginning. This stuff isn't demonic, it's beautiful, powerful, primal, and speaks to my soul.
@@guts329 Christians in Europe persecuted non-Christians (Jewish people, Pagans, Muslims) for well over 1,500 years 🤷♂️ it's not really political or talking shit, it's just historical fact. They're just making an observation on the music and the history.

I asked my husband if we could blast this while burning our large burn pile in the back yard. He said no, the neighbors might think we’re sacrificing someone. Lol
This might be too late since it circulated a lot, but the 'Hanga Dýra Mingja' part isn't actually 'Hanga Dýra Mingja'. It supposedly was old Icelandic but it makes no sense grammatically and the word Mingja does not exist in Old Icelandic. It's more likely to be 'Hangatýr Hamingja´ and then after chanting that a couple of times they say 'Ramr'. It makes more sense since it is a healing song, Hangatýr is Óðinn who is mentioned in the Merseburg incantations, Hamingja is Luck and Good Fortune in Old Norse, as well as a sort of guardian spirit, kind of. Ramr is strength in Old Norse. So really they are chanting ''Hanging God, Spirit of Fortune (bring) Strength'' Makes sense calling on them for healing, rather than hanging animals, I guess Goes kind of like this Hangatýr Hamingja Hangatýr Hamingja Hangatýr Hamingja Hangatýr Hamingja Hangatýr Hamingja Raaaaaaaaammmmmmmmrrrr!
@@jacobtaylor8250 Yeah you are probably correct in terms of intention. All documentation we have of those words used were written in Old Icelandic and Old Norse are pretty much the same in terms of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. The major difference was spelling and slight regional accents.
@The Equaliz3r Tough Truth: Suicide is cowardice, not discipline. Endurance is strength. There are always reasons to live regardless of what you may think. There are fates worse than death I know, but I'm not talking about circumstances as extreme as those. Glad the music made you snap out of it.
This reminds me of a story I heard. Back in the 90's during the genocides in Africa the west sent psychologist to help the people deal with trauma. They were sent home not to long after. The Africans said they the doctors made things worst, they put them in a room with them and make them talk about the things that happened, what only made them depressed. The way witch doctors did it was to say they were possessed so they can imagine the pain as something tangible, then they put them in a large group so they didn't feel alone, start beating drums and get them moving forcing adrenal and dopamine to increases, them they make them believe that the demon inside of them was forced out after hrs of this its a placebo affect.
My mother died in 2018, and my father died in 2023. This has been my go to song to feel some peace and solace. I'm so glad Heilung was successful at Castlefest.
Sorry to hear of your loss. My mother, too, passed in 2018 and I also discovered that Heilung is perfect music to escape from this world for while - just closing your eyes going along for the ride.
Imagine being in the middle of a bench press well beyond your normal capabilitys fueled only by the enerygy of the songs upbeat energetic drums and screaming.... only to loose all your streingth when the 4:58 mark hits as the weights come crashing down all at once on your chest as the song looses all its momentum
They have a lot of of 2:3 but this is technically 4:3. The "gam, gam, gam," is based in the 3 meter. Count that and the polymeter alongside that has 4 beats per it's 3. 2:3 would be a halftime feel of this beat. Felt like backing up the original commenter and to help clarify. Heilung rules.

You can tell they didnt compress any of their songs too which I highly respect. That is why it sound so good but you have to turn up your volume a little.
I just saw them on Saturday in San Francisco and it was the best audio quality of any show I've ever been to. The bass drum was hitting so hard my hair and my pants would puff in the breeze from the speakers moving air, yet I could hear every lyric crystal clear
Christopher Juul (band member, standing on the left when this set closed), did all the audio mixing, post production and video editing. The man is a freaking genius.
People seem to miss the point of this. They think because it's energetic its agressive. Primal is more the word for this. Its more of aprayer for healing than anything. Its an interpretation of an incantation that would be said over somebody seriously injured at a time when the best medicine they had was to plead for nature to take its course favorably.
The words that come to mind for me are "ecstasy" and "vitality." I feel there is some aggression, on the contrary-- but its purpose is apotropaic i.e. the idea being "we're gonna scare the shit out of whatever's ailing you."

I read somewhere that the melodic chorus parts stem from an ancient Germanic text which states that no matter how distant we are, in terms of ideology, geography, or physical appearance, we all have the same blood and life force running through us. I haven’t listened to Heilung in a while, and remembering that tidbit of information while listening to those parts legit made me tear up. The " lyrics " of that song are actually part of the Edda, it is a healing chant, telling first about how Wudan healed the wound of a horse, and then chanting on repeat the following invocation : Like bone-sprain, so blood-sprain, so joint-sprain: Bone to bone, blood to blood, joints to joints, so may they be glued!
@@nicolaspicard1501 It has nothing to do with the Edda(A collection of Old Norse texts). Its from the Old High German Merserberg charms, which specify incantations as well as stories of their use(Wodan healing his horse for instance)

Being there on stage would be much easier because you really need to get into the energy and then you don't even realize you're hitting the drums. They are so talented its unbelievable.

Having an interest in Norse literature, I find the history of runic poetry, inscriptions on head stones and armour all very fascinating. But thoroughly researched historic context aside, your musical execution is the best I’ve ever heard with regards to groups who also aim for this kind of sound, i.e Danheim and Waldrun etc. The percussion arrangement alone is sublime. The layers of rhythm you create feel like an externalised heartbeat that instills a great sense of focus and concentration when I listen to it. I hope you have a wonderful life, keep growing and expanding your knowledge.
Hello, don't know if I could totally agree with you on Alfadhirhaiti. As of what I have read about, through comments, the translation of that song is actually a song devoted to the All-Mighty, the Greatest of Gods, as well as presenting some of the titles attuned to Him :) It could be both a war chant and a invocation of the Almighty, though I'd take it as a chant sung as part of war preparations, to instill selves with the spirits of their deities as well as gain wisdom and power from ancestors (much like any people around the world had such war chants). As I'd say, it is a song of deeper connection to Nature who granted us life and nurtured us as Her creations ^^ As blood flows and bone grows, we are all one in the eyes of Nature, even if part seems to depart when worldly life apparently ends, ancestral blood will always flow through the new-comers, and ancestral bone will still grow in the new-comers, irrespective of how much times stir younger generations away - ancestral roots still grow and feed upon times apparently long forgotten.
When I listen to this song, I get the urge to light a table on fire, strip my clothes from my body, and dance in a trance like state around the fire...the problem is I'm at work, and such behavior might be frowned upon.

I am pleased to find out that this, my favorite hymn by Heilung, is a hymn of healing. Here are the lyrics & translation (updated): Because a lot of people are asking for... The lyrics are part of the Merseburg Incantations ("Merseburger Zaubersprüche"), discovered 1841 in Merseburg, but written in the 9th century in Fulda, Germany. (For lyrics see the last 3 lines:) Original (Old High German): "Phol ende uuodan uuorun zi holza du uuart demo balderes uolon sin uuoz birenkict thu biguol en sinhtgunt · sunna era suister thu biguol en friia · uolla era suister thu biguol en uuodan · so he uuola conda: sose ben renki, sose bluot renki, sose lidi renki ben zi bena, bluot zi bluoda, lid zi geliden, sose gelimida sin." German (more wordly than modern syntax): "Phol und Uuodan [=Wodan/Odin] waren zum Holz [=Wald] Da ward dem Balders Fohlen sein Fuß verrenkt Da besprach ihn Sinthgunt, Sunna ihre Schwester. Da besprach ihn Frija, Volla ihre Schwester. Da besprach ihn Wodan, so er wohl konnte: So Beinrenkung, so Blutrenkung, so Gliedrenkung: Bein zu Bein, Blut zu Blut, Glied zu Glied, so [sie] geleimt sind" [=so sind sie geheilt] English (extremely wordly, so you can see the relationship): "Phol and Uuodan were to woods, // [=Wodan/Odin, an example why "w" is called "double-u"] there was the Balder's foal his foot cricked So said him Sinthgunt, Sunna her sister. So said him Frija, Volla her sister. So said him Wodan, so he well could: So bone cricked, so blood cricked, so limb cricked: Bone to bone, blood to blood, limb to limbs, so glued [they] are." [=so they are healed] Englisch (modern): "Phol and Uuodan [=Wodan/Odin] were riding to the woods, and the foot of Balder's foal was cricked So Sinthgunt, Sunna's sister, conjured it. and Frija, Volla's sister, conjured it. and Wodan conjured it, as well he could: So bone cricked, so blood cricked, so limb [or joint?] cricked: Bone to bone, blood to blood, limb to limbs [or joint to joints?], so may they be mended/healed." I'll try(!) the North Germanic languages for the lyrics too (last 3 lines), just to show the similarities in our languages: Norwegian / Norsk: "så ben vricke, så blod vricke, så lem vricke: ben til ben, blod til blod, lem til lem, så lime [?] være!" Maybe some native speakers can correct the one or other...
No wonder the Romans never conquered Germania! Can you imagine, no lights, middle of a thick forest, crouched in your camp, a months march from home..... And in the distance you hear this!
Legionary: Ready your spears men I hear something.... From behind the dark trees: hanga dýra mingja hanga dýra mingja haaaaaaaa Legionary: .____. Fuck.
And then your legion finds itself being surrounded from all sides from charging barbarians in the middle of a forest and the music gets more agressive and louder.

Finally I found the English version of Wardruna - Völuspá. :)

So really they are chanting ''Hanging God, Spirit of Fortune (bring) Strength'' Makes sense calling on them for healing, rather than hanging animals, I guess
Goes kind of like this
Hangatýr Hamingja
Hangatýr Hamingja
Hangatýr Hamingja
Hangatýr Hamingja
Hangatýr Hamingja Raaaaaaaaammmmmmmmrrrr!

Four against three time is a very calming polyrhythm. This piece uses it as the basis, which is part of the reason why it’s so hypnotic.
Isn't that two against three though?
@@booty4031 Correct, this is based on a 2:3 polyrhythm

They have a lot of of 2:3 but this is technically 4:3. The "gam, gam, gam," is based in the 3 meter. Count that and the polymeter alongside that has 4 beats per it's 3. 2:3 would be a halftime feel of this beat. Felt like backing up the original commenter and to help clarify. Heilung rules.

You can tell they didnt compress any of their songs too which I highly respect. That is why it sound so good but you have to turn up your volume a little.
I actually find the live recordings by far better than the studio recordings. I was rather disappointed with the latter.
I just saw them on Saturday in San Francisco and it was the best audio quality of any show I've ever been to. The bass drum was hitting so hard my hair and my pants would puff in the breeze from the speakers moving air, yet I could hear every lyric crystal clear
They're all keeping up with each other. It's amazing. It's classic.
Exactly! The healing chant is powerfull and affirmative like they're commanding the wounds to mend.
So great!
It is invoking!
The words that come to mind for me are "ecstasy" and "vitality." I feel there is some aggression, on the contrary-- but its purpose is apotropaic i.e. the idea being "we're gonna scare the shit out of whatever's ailing you."
Wolfgang Drachenberg I like that ideas since Demons were commonly blamed as the cause for illness so scaring them should cure them of any illness.
Primal is synonym for natural.

Maybe listening to this song after so many months of not doing so is healing me from all of the misfortunes and issues that happened to me beforehand. I will never not love this song.
The " lyrics " of that song are actually part of the Edda, it is a healing chant, telling first about how Wudan healed the wound of a horse, and then chanting on repeat the following invocation :
Like bone-sprain,
so blood-sprain,
so joint-sprain:
Bone to bone,
blood to blood,
joints to joints,
so may they be glued!
Nope, not really. It's the words of an ancient healing incantation, basically calling for the wounded parts to come back together and be healed.
@@nicolaspicard1501 It has nothing to do with the Edda(A collection of Old Norse texts). Its from the Old High German Merserberg charms, which specify incantations as well as stories of their use(Wodan healing his horse for instance)

What did the war chant sound like!?

Yes, Alfadhirhaiti.
Song of retaliation is Krigsgaldr (my opinion).
Song of grievance: Fylgija ear.
It's sung with a chorus of armed warriors. And it certainly sounds like something that would scare the shit out of the enemy.
Yeah I would say given the songs surrounding Alfadhirhaiti that it is def a warsong.
When I listen to this song, I get the urge to light a table on fire, strip my clothes from my body, and dance in a trance like state around the fire...the problem is I'm at work, and such behavior might be frowned upon.

Not so long ago, I was laying in a bed for a few days again, nearly in total darkness, because of an eye injury and being horribly vulnerable to any light. All i did that time was listening to them. And now its over and whenever I listen to them, something deep inside me makes me want to dance. :D

I am pleased to find out that this, my favorite hymn by Heilung, is a hymn of healing. As someone who has suffered mightily in life with more ailments that I can count, I know this is a message from the gods. They led me to this song and I am eternally grateful to them. Praise Eir! Praise Thor! Praise Ullr! Praise Odin!

One of my favorites of Heilung. This song just hits to the core of humanity. The best form of primal expression. Can't stop listening.
Something like this shouldn't be performed in a building. It needs to be performed out in nature away from the city so that the full effect can be felt.
Good luck finding somewhere far enough from a city where people can still get it. And asking them not to ruin it when they're done.
They are coming to Red Rock Ampitheater in Colorado October 6, 2020. Exactly the venue needed!
IIRC this was actually performed in an open air venue. That fog that's rolling in? That's not coming from a smoke machine. It's all natural.

Here are the lyrics & translation (updated):
Because a lot of people are asking for...
The lyrics are part of the Merseburg Incantations ("Merseburger Zaubersprüche"), discovered 1841 in Merseburg, but written in the 9th century in Fulda, Germany.
(For lyrics see the last 3 lines:)
Original (Old High German):
"Phol ende uuodan uuorun zi holza
du uuart demo balderes uolon sin uuoz birenkict
thu biguol en sinhtgunt · sunna era suister
thu biguol en friia · uolla era suister
thu biguol en uuodan · so he uuola conda:
sose ben renki, sose bluot renki, sose lidi renki
ben zi bena, bluot zi bluoda,
lid zi geliden, sose gelimida sin."
German (more wordly than modern syntax):
"Phol und Uuodan [=Wodan/Odin] waren zum Holz [=Wald]
Da ward dem Balders Fohlen sein Fuß verrenkt
Da besprach ihn Sinthgunt, Sunna ihre Schwester.
Da besprach ihn Frija, Volla ihre Schwester.
Da besprach ihn Wodan, so er wohl konnte:
So Beinrenkung, so Blutrenkung, so Gliedrenkung:
Bein zu Bein, Blut zu Blut,
Glied zu Glied, so [sie] geleimt sind" [=so sind sie geheilt]
English (extremely wordly, so you can see the relationship):
"Phol and Uuodan were to woods, // [=Wodan/Odin, an example why "w" is called "double-u"]
there was the Balder's foal his foot cricked
So said him Sinthgunt, Sunna her sister.
So said him Frija, Volla her sister.
So said him Wodan, so he well could:
So bone cricked, so blood cricked, so limb cricked:
Bone to bone, blood to blood,
limb to limbs, so glued [they] are." [=so they are healed]
Englisch (modern):
"Phol and Uuodan [=Wodan/Odin] were riding to the woods,
and the foot of Balder's foal was cricked
So Sinthgunt, Sunna's sister, conjured it.
and Frija, Volla's sister, conjured it.
and Wodan conjured it, as well he could:
So bone cricked, so blood cricked, so limb [or joint?] cricked:
Bone to bone, blood to blood,
limb to limbs [or joint to joints?], so may they be mended/healed."
I'll try(!) the North Germanic languages for the lyrics too (last 3 lines), just to show the similarities in our languages:
Norwegian / Norsk:
"så ben vricke, så blod vricke, så lem vricke:
ben til ben, blod til blod,
lem til lem, så lime [?] være!"
Swedish / Svensk:
"så ben vricka, så blod vricka, så lem vricka:
ben till ben, blod till blod,
lem till lem, så limningen [?] vara!"
Danish / Dansk:
"så ben forvridning, så blod forvridning, så lem forvridning:
ben til ben, blod til blod,
lem til lem, så limningen [?] være!"
Islandic / íslenskur:
"svo bein liðhlaup(?), svo blóð liðhlaup(?), svo liður liðhlaup(?):
bein til bein, blóð til blóð,
liður til liður, så líma vera!"
Maybe some native speakers can correct the one or other...
thank you so much man ! awesome !
Great work and traduction, thanks lot ! Danke dir !
Something ethereal awakens in me when they chant that. It’s magical.
Wow.
wtf
No wonder the Romans never conquered Germania! Can you imagine, no lights, middle of a thick forest, crouched in your camp, a months march from home..... And in the distance you hear this!
And this isn't even a war song!
Imagine the americans would invade to bring democracy
Legionary: Ready your spears men I hear something....
From behind the dark trees: hanga dýra mingja hanga dýra mingja haaaaaaaa
Legionary: .____. Fuck.
And then your legion finds itself being surrounded from all sides from charging barbarians in the middle of a forest and the music gets more agressive and louder.
All of Germania is key there. They would have taken the rest if not for the blunder in the black forest.
This is a healing chant.... you can imagine what the war chant might have sounded like.
You can check that out hearing Krigsgaldr. Its the war chant, a warning.
Hakkersgaldyr is the before battle chant, in which they promise obliteration to their enemies :)
The idea is to scare the illness out of the body by yelling at it.
I would absolutely LOVE to live in a world where this was normal...we'd all be so much more in tune with everything natural
This song us about blood sacrifice animal specifically.
It is a healing as well.

There has always been something about music like this that speaks to the soul and spirit in a very special way. I’m a firm believer that human beings a far more than just physical matter. This band has done wonderful things for the ancient Germanic culture and its music. It’s a very special thing that a band like this can pull off.
If I’m about to train or if I seek invigoration in anything I listen to this kind of music. Because it speaks too a primal part of out soul. I’m a devout Christian myself and I don’t believe this music is evil in anyway. I will say to anyone: “if something speaks to your very soul and imbues you with a great spiritual high. Pursue it relentlessly. What ever that may be”
