Estryus Flemming - We're having this discussion because there is debate on the issue. While the use of sampling, covering, remixing, homaging and other forms of creatively "copying" has been in use for decades, there remains a strain of thought that any form of influence from your predecessors must be attenuated as much as possible.
Ive been a Logic fan for a long time and youre right. I hate how everyone thinks artists are "stealing" when really they're js inspired and trying to chase their dream. Logic is talented as hell and definitely deserves respect. You explain and understand! Subscribed!
I saw the title and instantly clicked. I’ve always talked to friends about how Logic and Tarantino are similar because of how they take inspiration and wear them on their sleeve. Thank you for making this video, I gotta show some friends this.
Perfect! This is the definition of analysis, viewing a topic from all aspects without bias! Critical feedback is what pushes up to greatness, people just don’t like hearing their flaws...but the great take it and improve upon it.
There is no such a thing as an "original" idea, it just doesn't exist. Everything was, is, and will be inspired by something else, and we are condemned to it. Nothing that you think you know came from nowhere, we only choose how to express it.
You know I read this title thinking that this guy was going to go in on Logic and call him out on stealing a bunch of shit. But after all the points he gives, im glad I heard him out. Great video!
This why you are my favorite TH-camer!!! A little older but I was talking to my nieces and nephews who are in their teens... I was trying to explain to them and I ended up showing them exactly what you just started with... How his shit is borrowed heavily!!!
ccole99 but their all samples. Even the kid cudi line he said in an interview how he called cudi up and asked if he could use it even checked with his label and manager. Yeah he samples alot but every rapper samples. For the most part most beats on the mixtape were created by "6ix" his producer
Brittany Jorgensen yes, matter fact I remember my very first tape that’s right tape of the chronic!!! My dad bought it for me because I told him that George Clinton was on the tape... That was 94 or so... i’ve been alive long enough to watch wrap go from something that people just think is evil to the phenomena that is now... From Will Smith winning the first Grammy for rap album to triple six mafia winning Oscar for best song... One thing I can say is opinions are like assholes we all have one
not everyone can actually make a really good sounding beat. as bright as logic is, he needs inspiration to come up with his hits and musical composition is something he needs to spark that. if he could do both he would've been a god. like if he could mix and master and rap all by himself without a single other hand.. damn
I drew that Tarantino cartoon at the 2:17 mark back in 2013. It was actually part of a bigger artwork that I was designing as a gift for my friend's birthday. How did you find it?
I love your videos man. They’re always so well put together and informational. As a huge logic fan you hit the nail on the head with your plot points. Thanks for this video man
I really love Logic, probably my favorite artist, but I always understand where people are coming from when they talk about his influencers and if they don't fully appreciate him. But holy hell, Bobby Tarantino 2 is a near perfect mixtape for me. Just a fun time. Although, he does contradict himself SO MUCH... its still really lit. Love the video, really great parallels between Tarantino and Young Sinatra himself!
I mean Tarantino did say “I steal from every movie ever made”. He just makes that shit look 10000% more bad ass. Love the video tho. Really went in depth with everything. Subbing!
Hit the nail on the head with those points. Thanks to Logic, I listened to more music I haven't been exposed before. Favorite track of Logic is definitely Soul Food followed by City of Stars.
this is cool, I get the amazing Kanye comparison but some of these are just lyricism references like Logic knew what he was doing with the Cudi and Eminem shit cus he's a fan.
Interpolation and sampling are really similar but they aren't the same. Interpolation focuses more on delivery, intonation and just general style. Listen to GOMD by J. Cole or Normal Girl by SZA and you'll notice how similar they are to the original but is used for a different purpose.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking samples and inspiration from other songs and albums, I love logic and I love the artists he 'straight up jacked' from, he's a very talented artist with a bigger and even brighter future ahead of him #Rattpack
If you had good lyrics over a fart sound you wouldn’t listen to it. Beats in rap are equal to lyrics in the building of hip hop as a culture and personally I feel like they can be more important
My best bass teacher taught me that the best way to come up with your own music is to look at the playing of others and learn it, and then splice it all together to create your own sound. I'm not plagiarizing if I learn the same lick as my favorite bass player, I'm not plagiarizing if I use that lick in my own solos and creation, but I if I use that lick over the same backing with the same context, we have a different story. Even though Logic is using beats and even some lines that don't belong to him, they're more like allusions to famous rap titles and artists rather than blatant stealing. Logic is so good because he knows the sounds he likes, from the artists he likes, and how to present it all to his fans while still being original. This creates a holistic sounding mega album that is mass produced and circulated through millions of hands, while, again, still being original. In this sense, he's merely following in the footsteps of artists of his monetary and commercial calibre (Kendrick, Rihanna, etc)
Half of this comment is accurate and the other half is riding Logic, what is original? Trippie Redd and Carti have more unique work in their songs, lyric/flow/melody wide within the past 2 albums than Logic has had across his last 5
@@tb8654 4 years after writing this comment I can definitely agree that I was riding Logic there. I think I was just trying to get at the fact that he made it as a successful artist because of those traits. His album is original in the sense that he didn't plagiarize the work but the song ideas themselves aren't original
C'mon "crush a bit, little bit, roll it up, take a hit" is something schoolboy q has used as well. Plenty of rappers have said it just like C.R.E.A.M. Imo I don't think logic copies. It's similar but it's not copying. Even the hotline bling comparison I didn't really see copying I just saw a similar style in a different beat. The only one I could see is the contact song since that beat is almost exactly like amazing except a little slower.
Great video man! I have never seen your stuff and I was pleasantly surprised by the level headed attitude on this subject. As a guy in a band, I can tell you that you got alot of these things right from the perspective of many musicians. I think your point about whether anyone can call themselves the best if the steal is really valid. I have been forced in my time in college to study music history, and I can tell you that this has been happening forever. Beethoven was hugely inspired by Haydn and Mozart and he is considered by many to be the most influential composer in that realm of music. The difference is like you said, setting yourself apart, and for rap that usually means lyrically, at least for me. I think the Cudi rip that you showed is an example of logic stealing, but to specifically show the love to a huge influence of his. I personally don't think logic is the best to do it, not because he steals from others, but that he recycles lyrics from mixtape to album of vice versa. Everything aside though, it seems like you are doing good, thoughtful videos and I'll be checking more out. I'll leave you with a quote from Stravinsky to double down on how good your thoughts on the subject are. "A good composer does not imitate, he steals."
I liked the video and the fact your doing both criticism and positives towards Logic being influenced and stuff. If I have to say who does it the best, in my opinion I have to say Eminem. If you look at his songs he has some that straight up use music/lyrics from popular songs and makes them his own. Like rhyme or reason and in your head are two big examples.
“...You can never criticize the artist you like...” HAHAHAHA then Logic just dropped COADM and practically the entire RattPack is inventing theories about how there’s gonna be an entire second half to this album because of how disappointing it is.
I'm a huge logic fan. But this vid was put together so well and you are so intelligent and your not bias at all. You only put in facts and you go in others perspective. I completely agree with you and all your really saying is facts. New sub!
He didnt say he's the greatest of all time, but he said he's the greatest at what he do. He's the greatest in the art of stealing, respectfully. But its not stealing, its retroactively paying homage, but with a twist he's actually using something similar to something familar made by his famous artist to attract new fans by using his twist or influence on it, whether its the cadence/flow, lyrics or track/instrumental. Kinda like reverse psychology in a sense like, maybe by using something ppl are used in his unique way, he promote his message to ppl who wouldnt give it a look, otherwise. The power of suggestion with a familar phrase or sound, maybe.
The problem is, Logic takes so much "inspiration" from other rappers, that if those rappers didn't exist, Logic wouldn't exist. If Logic didn't exist, Kanye would still be putting out good music and Kendrick would still pump out classics. Like, if other rappers were to disappear, what would Logic do? He takes "inspiration" so much, but doesn't have his own sound.
@@skeletonizer7512 “if Logic didn’t exist, Kanye would still be putting out good music….” I get the part where you said “ if those rappers didn’t exist , Logic wouldn’t exist “ but that second part has me like 🧐😐

As soon as he started off with saying he listens to chris webby I was like psh this guy doesn't know what he's talking about, but then he gave us a well thought out - logical - discussion. Good stuff!
The way I look at it is no artist, to my knowledge, has called Logic out for "stealing" their beat, flow, line, etc.(Iguess Joyner for that 1-800 song). But really the only people getting mad or bringing it up are fans. Obviously, these artists know Logic and if they felt Logic was taking their shit, they would call him on it. Logic has been very open about who inspires him, and I see his "stealing" more as tributes to those artists who inspire him. Whats that saying, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." Anyways I thought this was a great video! I bet you write great argumentative essays haha
Josh he gets inspired by a lot of people like Sinatra Kanye all those people. 1-800 was not stolen from Joyner. Joyner made a number album 1-800 is a number song to complete different things

While the use of sampling, covering, remixing, homaging and other forms of creatively "copying" has been in use for decades, there remains a strain of thought that any form of influence from your predecessors must be attenuated as much as possible.
I know that rap samples more than an elder person at a Sam's club 😂😂
hip hop*, and cause its part of hip hop
Ive been a Logic fan for a long time and youre right. I hate how everyone thinks artists are "stealing" when really they're js inspired and trying to chase their dream. Logic is talented as hell and definitely deserves respect. You explain and understand! Subscribed!
I saw the title and instantly clicked. I’ve always talked to friends about how Logic and Tarantino are similar because of how they take inspiration and wear them on their sleeve. Thank you for making this video, I gotta show some friends this.
"Once you've made something that's worthy of being stolen itself, then I think you've made it".......DAAAAAAAAMNN DUDE
Being a fan isn’t not talking smack, it’s about staying a fan through the bad stuff.
Perfect! This is the definition of analysis, viewing a topic from all aspects without bias! Critical feedback is what pushes up to greatness, people just don’t like hearing their flaws...but the great take it and improve upon it.
I agree that basically nothing is original anymore and it's all about execution.
EDIT: Also I just lost it at the Michael B. Jordon bit.
There is no such a thing as an "original" idea, it just doesn't exist.
Everything was, is, and will be inspired by something else, and we are condemned to it.
Nothing that you think you know came from nowhere, we only choose how to express it.
An amazing video. One of the most reasonable and constructive discussions I've heard about "stealing"/sampling/influence, etc.
iAzteca agree hahah
You know I read this title thinking that this guy was going to go in on Logic and call him out on stealing a bunch of shit. But after all the points he gives, im glad I heard him out. Great video!
...sampling? And the hotline bling one was the biggest reach.
However during the end you made some good points.
You slick boi, I saw that undeniable when you said undeniable
This why you are my favorite TH-camer!!! A little older but I was talking to my nieces and nephews who are in their teens... I was trying to explain to them and I ended up showing them exactly what you just started with... How his shit is borrowed heavily!!!
ccole99 TH-camer is that like a Disney Imagineer?
Do you actually listen to rap? If you did, you'd know that when rappers use a line from another song, they're paying homage to that artist.
Brittany Jorgensen like J. Cole in Adolescence, when he says “I grew up, a fuckin screw up.” shits nice. idk why people complain bout it
ccole99 but their all samples.
Have you not heard, “ Welcome to Forever?” Bobby Tarantino is not the best mixtape
“Rap samples more than an elder person at a Sam’s club” thank you sir you just ghost wrote some of my bars 🤷🏿♂️
Damone Tyrell STEALING
Bobby Clark “SAMPLING”
Damn he said if you take something and make it your own. Now others wanna steal it 🔥.
not everyone can actually make a really good sounding beat. as bright as logic is, he needs inspiration to come up with his hits and musical composition is something he needs to spark that. if he could do both he would've been a god. like if he could mix and master and rap all by himself without a single other hand.. damn
I drew that Tarantino cartoon at the 2:17 mark back in 2013. It was actually part of a bigger artwork that I was designing as a gift for my friend's birthday. How did you find it?
Googled Tarantino PNG and popped up on related.
Cited it under “Andrews 23”, is that you?
Well, my DeviantArt name is Andrewss23 (with TWO 's'es), but you were close enough, so yes, that's me.
Gotcha, updated
Good stuff!
Thanks! I appreciate it!
I love your videos man. They’re always so well put together and informational. As a huge logic fan you hit the nail on the head with your plot points. Thanks for this video man
DearNurse Nicole fuck logic
It’s actually plot points not point plots
Mythical Titan that’s what I meant lol thanks though
DearNurse Nicole he definitely did
No one has EVER broken down the “copycat” mentality as accurately as you have and for that, you have earned a sub keep up the good work
"Good artists copy; great artists steal."
If you're any kind of creative person, you already know the difference and what they mean.
100%
I really love Logic, probably my favorite artist, but I always understand where people are coming from when they talk about his influencers and if they don't fully appreciate him. But holy hell, Bobby Tarantino 2 is a near perfect mixtape for me. Just a fun time. Although, he does contradict himself SO MUCH... its still really lit. Love the video, really great parallels between Tarantino and Young Sinatra himself!
Ryan St. Hilaire what do you mean contradicts himself?
yh logic said bobby taratino mixtapes aren't serious projects they're just for fun and to vibe
I saw this video when it came out in march, (clicked on it for Tarantino) and it 1. Inspired me to develop my own style and 2. Introduced me to Logic.
I see it as more paying homage to the original flows or samples he uses but I am boast because I love him
Bias
Logic and stealing in the same sentence ? Pump your brakes! **watches before judgement**
I mean Tarantino did say “I steal from every movie ever made”. He just makes that shit look 10000% more bad ass. Love the video tho. Really went in depth with everything. Subbing!
Was going to dislike till I watched excellent analysis will definitely be subscribing.
This is called an Interpolation. Its the artists own twist on the original.
its called sampling fuckhead
Charles Garon dude can you get lost?? 😂😂 you’re on everybody ass for no reason
Interpolation and sampling are really similar but they aren't the same. Interpolation focuses more on delivery, intonation and just general style. Listen to GOMD by J. Cole or Normal Girl by SZA and you'll notice how similar they are to the original but is used for a different purpose.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking samples and inspiration from other songs and albums, I love logic and I love the artists he 'straight up jacked' from, he's a very talented artist with a bigger and even brighter future ahead of him #Rattpack
lol Kanye - Waves is also a sampled track.
What is your favorite Logic song?
#Flexicution
The AtZ Show Never Been! I'm a HUGE Logic fan, but this is a great video. Well done, sir.
Are you a pusha t fan
Warm it up
Definatly Man of the year.
Had such an impact on me

My favorite Logic song?
#DeadPresidentsIIIAllTheWay
#DeadPresidentsIIIAllTheWay :)
PopGreen_Master chhjv
That song is fuckin dope
:Welcome back Tv: logic just don't give a fuck. Ratt pack
Dead presidents not to be confused with Growing pains 3
Rap is not about the beat its about the lyrics just because a beat is similar it doesn't mean that they are bad
If you had good lyrics over a fart sound you wouldn’t listen to it. Beats in rap are equal to lyrics in the building of hip hop as a culture and personally I feel like they can be more important
It is always about the beat bro
@@ryanb.carden255 false. Bears eat beats. Bears, beats, battle star galactica
@@evsanger crap I didn't even notice it was YEARS 😭 I def agree on that bro, I do like Logic both musically and as a person
9:38 "To your grandma when she decided to name your parent(s)" Que Sweet Home Alabama
*The Art of Sampling
you are sooooo good at what u do and make such good points that I would have never thought about
Who can relate!
WOO!
I liked the video and the fact your doing both criticism and positives towards Logic being influenced and stuff. If I have to say who does it the best, in my opinion I have to say Eminem. If you look at his songs he has some that straight up use music/lyrics from popular songs and makes them his own. Like rhyme or reason and in your head are two big examples.
sampling, and paying homage to legends is what most music is nowadays.
Wanna know something? We wouldnt be anything without the people before us.
New sub!
Damn you really went in because I initially thought this was gonna be very opinionated but really this was very informative
"To when your grandma was naming your parents everyone steals" please explain your parents being siblings.
Maybe your grandma knew your other grandma and gave her a name suggestion... That grew up to be your other parent
Damn not many people on the internet have an open mind like you, nice to see it.
@Stan Henderson Does he know everyone who's apart of & has contributed to the Art of Stealing. If not, how can he decide that?
The problem is, Logic takes so much "inspiration" from other rappers, that if those rappers didn't exist, Logic wouldn't exist. If Logic didn't exist, Kanye would still be putting out good music and Kendrick would still pump out classics. Like, if other rappers were to disappear, what would Logic do? He takes "inspiration" so much, but doesn't have his own sound.
How would logic’s existence affect Kanye’s music ? 🫠
@@GCASTROOO1 your question isnt related to what I said at all
@@skeletonizer7512 “if Logic didn’t exist, Kanye would still be putting out good music….”
I get the part where you said “ if those rappers didn’t exist , Logic wouldn’t exist “ but that second part has me like 🧐😐
@@GCASTROOO1 I ment that logics existence would not affect kanyes music
this is my first time coming to your channel but you’re very insightful and i enjoyed what you had to say. subbed
Under Pressure will be his best work ever, nothing will ever top it because of how corny he has become.
Idk. Welcome to forever comes close. And the way, Young Sinatra: Ultra 85 - is looking. Be hard to tell
Young Sinatra IV is coming out soon, and so far the stuff Logic put out a few weeks before, like his YSIV freestyle, One Day, The Return, they all seem promising.
you mean metropolis?
TITS shits all over UP.
agreed
PREAACH, IVE BEEN SAYING IT FOR YEARS... godfather2 > godfather1
ALL of them lmao 😂
na lmao
JRA RAPPER! Everyone says that i think you sampled that
Nah.. The Godfather: Part III > The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II
Sofia Coppola was far too magnificent in the film.
I was about to go off but decided to watch the whole video. You make a good point. Good video man.
I LOVE LOGIC
Salty Tea ok...?
I think some people are getting inspired by Logic , and mostly show that in other ways but not in music. Like doing what they love. & Aye I listened to this whole video and I do see what you mean . I totally agree Logic has been inspired by others but I feel he makes it his own.
i do music and logic inspires me with the stuff he does
I swear I’m shocked each video with how real you are. Found you via the Kanye/Cudi video a lil while ago; spot on, insta-sub. This was no different. Keep it up, man!
*This video is so good I'm about to steal it*
This comment is stolen
Everyone borrows ideas from everyone
The truth is that every thing you know
is borrowed hence the term being "influenced"
As soon as he started off with saying he listens to chris webby I was like psh this guy doesn't know what he's talking about, but then he gave us a well thought out - logical - discussion. Good stuff!
In my opinion 1-3 lines are inspiration it becomes stealing when they jack a verse
I bet you write great argumentative essays haha
not a logic fan at all. but its called sampling and everything he sampled was almost already taken from another samples sooooo ''lol''
Josh he gets inspired by a lot of people like Sinatra Kanye all those people. 1-800 was not stolen from Joyner. Joyner made a number album 1-800 is a number song to complete different things
Josh fax
He stole Freddie Gibbs album cover to the tee and got called out
A lot of logic fans don’t really listen to hip hop, like myself at first, but he introduced me to so many artist, like Tarantino did, him
A real fan will tell the person they support honest opinions . That’s the #rattpack
yeah I love the under pressure album but it just sounds like a reskin of GKMC to me
Great video. Huge logic fan but the video is valid. You did this 100% on point and much love because some people just straight bash instead of being constructive
I'LL STEAL IT, NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW
