  • Here's how some of the greatest rappers make rhymes.
From the simple nursery rhyme-like bars of Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" to the smooth East Coast flow of Notorious B.I.G.'s hit song "Hypnotize" to the speedy delivery of Kendrick Lamar's "Rigamortis," rhyming in rap music has not only evolved, it's gotten better.
The video above explores how some of the greatest rappers of all time create memorable, lyrically dense rhymes.
And here's a playlist highlighting songs that are prime examples of how great rhyming in rap can be: open.spotify.com/user/estelle...

Yes, it would be enjoyable to watch rap with different styles/ flows/ subject matter/ mastery of the English language while displaying pride in their craft slowly rot into retarded/ same subject matter/ special education flows, mastery of the same 320 words, while ducking the rest of the English language, talkin' bout they 'Rappers', while the currently skilled real rappers don't get proper shine because they think before they talk. That would be awesome to watch.

7:55 it’s “motif” [pronounced: mōˈtēf]. Motive and motif might sound like very similar words but the difference lies in their definitions. The word “motive” is defined as, “a reason for doing something, especially one that is hidden or not obvious.” While in western music theory, the word “motif” means, “a short succession of notes producing a single impression; a brief melodic or rhythmic formula out of which longer passages are developed.” The difference between those two words may seem minuscule, but when informing/educating people about musical terminology or terminology in general, spelling and pronunciation is a very important.
Western music theory aside, Kendrick’s flow is amongst the illest of today’s generation and music theory had nothing to do with it. Nuff said.

The rhyming is great, but very few rappers are in the same league as top poets when it comes to content. Granted, there's so much bad poetry out there as well as so many mediocre rappers, but if you think, for example, that Eminem's or Masta Ace's storytelling is good enough to compare with poets, you probably need to read better poetry.

There's a line in the first verse of MF DOOM's track "Beef Rapp" that encapsulates everything I love about rappers who create complex rhyming patterns in their songs. It goes like this:
Whether it is animal, vegetable, or mineral
It's a miracle how he get so lyrical
And proceed to move the crowd like a old Negro spiritual
Not only is MF DOOM talking about how he's a great rhymer, he's showing you.

....No...It's because white people struggle with rhythm so erratic rappers appeal more. But there are mainstream rappers with an erratic unorthodox flow...Even if the content is trash, like Future and Migos.

    • @severedghost
      @severedghost 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

***** I don't think you understood the comment. It's not about who you listen to , it's about what you hear when you listen to the artist. With great lyricist, you hear an art , a story or feel the passion of the words. With party type rappers , they are supposed to get you hype and make music for you to dance to. Unfortunately the mainstream is filled with almost exclusively party rappers , so mainstream only listeners get a pretty one side opinion of what hip hop /rap is. turn on a radio or any top hip hop or today station and you hear like 3 different types of flows from about 15 different artist, all rapping about hoes , money , and weed, hell ,do you see how many people think that the best rapper out is drake . Even what you said was evidence of this , yes Joey, Cole, chance and Kendrick are good lyricists , but they are the some of the only actual lyricists to make it into the mainstream but some of them would be destroyed by a lot of independent rappers, and even most of their best stuff is never made it pass the their albums or mixtapes. don't take this as disrespect, this is just the current state of hip-hop.

My transcription of this snippet from Down Syndrome might not be right.
Let me tell you a little something about the self (tell em son)
I be a piece of the East coast, so give a toast to
Plug Wonder why back in the day who sowed these words engendered
So when I ran a phrase in June you didn't catch it til December
I'm a member of them kids from the inner city
Giving you kitties audible treats, you be aching for making
More money than a pagan holiday
Not from the PJ's, yet I still got something to say
      Also:
I speak divine of god thories, no need to be high
alway inhale the facts cause I don't exhale lies
play the greater man's game to bounce off my losses
so I could earn the acres, the houses, the horses
of course it's much greater than your benz or your lex,
the engine to my comprehension is just too complex
