In the olden days, we put a note in their mailbox saying " hey, I got your cows". Then they brought over a six pack, and said thanks. That's how it was back then in the '70's.
If you're not going the best route which would be getting a more specific set of springs, I'd go with cutting versus heating. Heating will mess with the hardness of the metal and leave the spring prone to bending/breaking.
@@jorgejiminez-rk1uu never done them but I was told if I did, that you needed too figure out the height you think you need and cut it “long” so there is wiggle room lol
You don't want to heat springs unless you're set up to re-do the heat treatment on the whole spring. You'll soften the metal and it won't be able to hold as much weight before bending.
I can confirm Mikey made it to at least early afternoon on Tuesday. Wife and I stopped to take a pic at the Desperado sign and he was pulling into the gate. Stopped, backed up, and came and talked to us, took a pic with us, and then took one of just me and my wife in front of the sign.

I guess he wants to have goodwill with his neighbor which is a good idea. If they are his neighbor’s cows, he may have been in the habit of letting them roam next door since the property has been literally abandoned for over 20 years. It seems to me that an “old school” neighbor who only has a landline without an answering machine and who is used to not having a neighbor might be someone Matt needs to tread lightly with not play “finders keepers.” Anyway, I understand why Matt is going to make a real effort to reach the guy and ask if they are his cows.
You were speculating that some farmer/rancher filled in the cave to keep his cattle from falling in… now you’ve gone and opened it back up and have loose cattle showing up.
So! Matt! You’re a veterinarian, an abandoned mansion repairman, a demolition guy, a first place burnout champion, an abandoned ranch owner, now…..cattle rancher! What can you not do??!!! 😃😃❤️❤️❤️
If you want to give Quattro a chance, post no trespassing/no hunting signs along the border of your property. This also protects your livestock and family from hunters "accidentally" being too close to your house/farm. This also legally protects you if someone you don't know trespasses.
You fed them, they're yours now. Ranch law. Seriously though, those are some sweet cows someone has to own them. Jenna feeding the calves, I am totally here for that. The white calf is her bestie now.

Hey Matt something that would be pretty cool is for y’all to get some beehives and then sell Desperado Resort Honey amongst other cool stuff like candles, soap, etc. especially with your cacti there the honey will likely have a really cool flavor to it! Also when can we see cave digging content again? 😂😅
Those things like using some effort to pull a thorn out of the face of a cow, opens up my heart! Matt, you're a real good person! Greetings from Saxony/Germany!
Leave the front high like that then put a drift angle kit on it with some wheel spacers if needed for tire clearance. You’ll have more control in the burnout pit for sure.
a local cabin owner near me had the same scenario with a buck. and someone put a "hunter" orange collar on it and it has survived so far, still comes and goes.
Give the springs some time to settle before cutting or heating. Though I personally prefer cutting. It's really the same either way, the spring is damaged in the end, but I just feel cutting a coil off is less damaging than heating and letting it collapse. As someone who doesn't understand metallurgy I can say with confidence that metallurgy stuff happens. Probably
Heating should be just fine without damage... if you heat it evenly. But since most of us don't have a forge hanging around a heating with a torch will result in a weaker spring because metal magic. -source drunkin father in law rants who heat treats steel for a living
I wouldn't get mad at Jenna with the fencing, she was pre-occupied socialising (it's important!) the baby cow... and it is content! She really is the animal whisperer on the ranch. I also hope you get to keep the cows :)
Basic metallurgy, heating the springs can make them contract but if not don right you may need to re temper the springs or they will be trash, so cutting is better option of those two.
Almost every heated spring I saw back in the 80's and 90's mini trucking days ended up snapping. So while not ideal because you're removing the flat/flatter seating portion on the end of the spring, it is still better to cut a spring vs heating one if those are your only two options to lower your vehicle.
Make a small enclosure with a gate connecting to the front of that gate. That ways you can get the loose cattle inside the small one without risking the others
On the Springs for the Mustang, Your best option is trying to cut 1 revolution out of each spring. DO Not Heat the spring! You could change the tempering of the steel which could create a failure under stress due to weak spots.
Don't fear the longhorns just remember if the get you hemmed up all you have to do is grab the end of their horn and lead them around that's what I used to do when I had some. They look intimidating but really the long horn gives you a lot of leverage to persuade them around
Cutting springs is much better than heating springs and make sure you cut off less than you think you need to because it goes quickly you can always take more off but you can't put it back
MATT cut off the spring on one end but make it about 1 coil higher than u want it to sit. Then heat up with acetylene torch ONLY 1 full coil on the end you cut and then push it down flat to meet up with the coil below it. Look at a finished spring end to get the idea so you don’t have the one side poking up and have the spring sitting sideways, feel free to contact me if this didn’t make sense
Never heat springs matt, it takes the structural integrity out of the the springs since they are heat treated already to get the spring shape, always "cut" if you have to shorten them, start with a 1/4 coil and go from there, hope that helps.
Cold cut zip disk cut a but the cool with water to not stress the steel cut in 2 inch amounts and refit to test for height you do not want to heat and let sag because it will just mess up the spring steel.
Everytime I tell her that she just rolls over and says something about 'not being in the mood'. Ironic bc I'm ALWAYS in the mood for a new OffTheRanch video!
i suggest using spring compression clamps instead of heating or cutting. basically theyre the reverse of the spacers you used before and they arent permanent in case you need the full spring extension in the future
I still haven’t figured out why you got the long horn cows I much prefer the ones that wonder over to your side of the ranch. They’re definitely used to people. They were so cute n sweet even the Bull. I’m hoping there’s a part 2 to this range of cows. ♥️♥️😊👍👍🌟 🐂
Air bags. Can adjust the height for loading & drop for burnouts.I've cut springs, they get real bouncy. Heating will compromise the integrity. Plenty room in the bed for a compressor & small tank. Plus the cool factor.
PLEASE, T-Shirt. "Desperado Fencing Co. Est. 2023" and let it run long enough that I can order one by the time you announce them without them being sold out. That would be so Awesome!
The best thing would be to get new springs specifically made for the height you want but if you absolutely cannot do that cutting is better than heating. Neither are ideal but heating will weaken the spring and then you'll have to replace it anyway.
Near my hometown, we had what is supposedly the only cow racing event in Australia - the "Compass cup" every January, The cows aren't trained. It was chaos. Sadly it ended in 2019.
Heating the spring is an old school trick to lower but will ruin the spring steel and it may break. Cutting the spring will shorten but also make it way stiffer (that may be fine for a burnout rig)
I've done both to springs, don't heat springs. You'll take the spring out of the spring. It will keep lowering over time. Cut would be better for long term. Less damage to the metal. The best thing is to buy the right spring.
Man when you did the voice for the bull it tricked my brain for a half second but for that half second my mind was blown!🤯 Always enjoy your videos and love watching the resort grow. Keep up the awesome work!

@offtheranch you have a massive algal bloom in your watering hole every thought of dying it blue, like they do for fishing lakes will stop all the algae in its tracks.
You should be able to find the right length and rate spring pretty easy Matt. There are calculators for it that are really complicated but I'm sure if you got a hold of summit or one of the big suspension companies they could help you out. You'll have to scale the car but there should be plenty of people out there that can help.
@4:47 cut the springs Matt, you can match the cut on each spring and only do a half a coil at a time im guessing you will need 1 to 1 1/4 coils cut out. If you heat the springs you cannot match it on each side and you take the integrity of the spring away the bounciness and becomes a sloppy ride in the front for the spring.
Cows and especially calves are easily tricked into thinking a gate is closed even if it is a bit open. Can be tricky getting them in by yourself sometimes, good job!
That’s a nice little bull. Won’t have to big calves on delivery. But you can deliver them anyway, you’re a vet😆. Glad you’re going to the cave again too.

Easy solution: get a buddy to bring over some panels and set up a cattle chute. Lure her into the chute, close the chute gate behind her, then open the gate to the pasture. She'll only have one way to go, then you can close the pasture gate and remove the chute.
I know bottle-fed cows when I see 'em. That definitely ain't the first time those calves have been fed by a human hand. Extremely questionable though that they weren't tagged, or branded. 17:00 I saw Mikey again!!! We love him!! Can we have an episode with a Mikey Q&A? Who is Mikey??🤔🤔 How did you meet? What all does he do for the demo team?
Definitely need to cut the springs instead of heating them. I used to have a 94 S10 that was lowered and cut the springs in the front. Just go down from the point that the spring ends either a full coil or 1/2 coil for stability. Don't go 1/4 or 3/4 for the same stability reasons of heating them. Love all the videos! ❤❤❤
I don't mind the front end of the ranch-tang, but if you lower it I would cut the springs instead of heat them. Also, looking forward to the cave content.
In Northern Ireland we use acoutics to move cattle. Or, more accurately, A Coo Stick. It's a stick that you use to hit the cows with. Usually a metre or so long bit of about 1 inch diameter plastic pipe. Just a wee tap on the ass is enough to direct them. It doesn't really hurt them, it just suggests that they should go in the direction you point them in. For bulls, a sturdy, heavy wooden stick or a pitchfork may be required, to dissuade them from punting you through the nearest wall.
You could make spring blocks that are the length you need to raise it for the old springs. They would go between the springs and the frame on the top side just like raising a truck. Or, use the C10 springs and cut them, it might take a few tries in and out but it’s better than heating them

Can we have an episode with a Mikey Q&A?
Who is Mikey??🤔🤔
How did you meet?
What all does he do for the demo team?
Mikey needs his own show for deffo
@@MrBertbox He and Charlie from Garand Thumb should collab.
🏆
@@Jeff.78 100% agree, Mikey and Charlie in the same place may alter the future of mankind!!
No one ever asks "Why is Mikey?" 😅
Definitely need to cut the springs instead of heating them. I used to have a 94 S10 that was lowered and cut the springs in the front. Just go down from the point that the spring ends either a full coil or 1/2 coil for stability. Don't go 1/4 or 3/4 for the same stability reasons of heating them. Love all the videos! ❤❤❤
Respect from the UK
I don't mind the front end of the ranch-tang, but if you lower it I would cut the springs instead of heat them.
Also, looking forward to the cave content.
Just remember, he wont be friendly come the rut....
Surely he knows that. He is a veterinarian.
😳😅yep, those days are coming.
@@MRWest85 thumbs 👍
@@MRWest85 he's also not an avid hunter, I've met vets who didn't know shit about wildlife
For fixing fences get yourself some hog rings they make mending fences easy.
Everyone needs a Mikey in their life. Lol. Good job, Matt getting that baby in the fence without loosing anyone. 👍💯
@10:03 pull that cactus thorn out, easy peasy. You did, good on you! God bless
" I just petted the baby!😁" 🤣🤣💀
We want more CAVES!! 🪨 YAY!! 😅
I’ll definitely be back for the next episode now. lol
You could make spring blocks that are the length you need to raise it for the old springs. They would go between the springs and the frame on the top side just like raising a truck.
Or, use the C10 springs and cut them, it might take a few tries in and out but it’s better than heating them
I love this channel because you never know what Matt is up to that day and what the entertainment will be.
