Welcome everyone to our second roleplay series, where in Crusader Kings 3, I play my characters according to their character traits. We are playing Leon Phokas, the founder of the Phokas Family is the great-grandfather of Emperor Nikephoros II, the famous military leader known as the "Pale Death of the Saracens." We begin in Cilicia and border the Muslim emirates to the east. To contrast the Rurik campaign where war was the focus in the very beginning. We're going to go full Byzantine with many plots and schemes instead of just trying to use brute force to win everything! I chose to start as a komes (count) to amp up the challenge since a doux (duke) would have a much easier time of it.

Furthermore, we should focus on getting control over Antioch, as it is a religious holding which'll help the the empire as a whole... And it is a rather rich and stragically important county which should be under our direct control.
Nameless count abducts the leader of the Islamic world, forces him to give up territory and gets to keep the territory. Truly the realest of scenarios.
It took the Byzantines(including several prominent members of the Phokas family as generals) over a decade of campaigning to seize that area that he just took with one sneaky abduction plot. It's borderline an exploit that you can do that though...not so sure Paradox is going to keep it in, a lowly count in an enemy country with limited diplomatic contact should find it much more difficult to kidnap the most important person in the Caliphate.
@@Darwinist Definitely an exploit though I don't know how they are going to nerf it. The abduction plot is just bs on the face of it. I mean you could just give all your land to one Über-Duke and abduct them. It's half-way through to North Korea mode but without all the tedium.

Also include anti-kidnapping, anti-assassination stuff like royal Bodyguards(so you could invest in say, the Varangian Guard) Nabbing an Emperor or Caliph should be night on impossible, the heist of a century.

Abducting someone from outside of the realm should be impossible if you are not independent. Abducting someone and then letting them go should still give an opinion hit both to them and to people that care about them... etc etc. The problem is, all these nerfs would make abduction (almost?) completely useless. That's what I meant by it being bs. It's either full cheese or total crap.
@@someguycalledcerberus9805 I believe that it could be balanced correctly Potential repercussion should be greater though - like your liege demanding you hand prisoners over or that you release them if he likes them, punishing you for meddling in foreign policy(abducting a titled character from another realm should be a secret that you want to keep tight, especially if your liege has an alliance or a truce with that realm. Also, we need prison break schemes. There are many examples from history of members of the nobility bribing their way out of imprisonment or their friends busting them out. Maybe they are already in the game and I just don't know about them? Intrigue should be high risk, high reward.

There was also an Emperor Phocas in the Byzantine empire, circa the early 600s AD. A lowborn nobody who rose high in the imperial armies, he was elevated to the purple when the armies grew tired of his predecessor, Emperor Maurice He killed Maurice and ruled the empire for a decade or so. He was largely incompetent and ruined the empire. Letting the persians move further and further into the eastern provinces. And refused to acknowledge a new pope for almost a year because the new Pope Boniface refused to pay him a large enough bribe Eventually The Exarch of Africa rebelled and the Exarchs son overthrew Phocas, executed him and declared himself Emperor Heraclius
The 2nd Νικηφωρος Φωκας (latinized: Nikephoros II Phokas), who ruled the Byzantine empire for like half a decade in the mid 960's or something, was considered a pretty decent dude as far as I know. There s currently a frigate in the Greek military navy called "Nikephoros Phokas", after him, so I spose he couldn't be too bad. He fought near Kilikia (also spelled as Cilicia) which is the area next to you and also Cyprus (campaign ideas, it s just a swim away) and eventually apex-ed many regions for the empire up to Tripoli and parts of Syria (says google, I can't remember shit from highschool). Apparently he was considered a great military mind and a great commander. Keep in mind Nikephoros translates to "(he who) bears/brings victory", the Victorybringer or something :) That sounds like a WWE name though :) Hope that poor kid doesnt die in like the last 25 mins of the video which is were I paused to write all these :) Seems like a fun playthrough

I dont know if you guys noticed but the byzantine armor design is heavily inspired by the Byzantine icons . See st Michael. st Demetrius st George etc . Pretty nice touch
John Julian Norwich has an excellent trilogy on Byzantine history. Available on Amazon. They literally saved Europe from multiple waves of Jihad, until they finally fell in 1453.
My Doux, I beseech you. You must consolidate your power over the land you own and reclaim Antioch for the Bizantine Empire. To do that, I would suggest becoming the Emperor's Spymaster and to invest in the infrastructure of your realm. After all, wealth, influence and information are the lifeblood of realms. As for recaliming Antioch, the shadows are your greatest weapon in this endeavour. May the Phokas dinasty shine brightly for ages to come.

It needs more time before it's ready for a series like this. It has a lot of issues. I did a trial run with it and the Emperor was constantly dealing with factions, which made my job too easy.

Your lordship, The empire is mighty but can ill-afford internal strife. I would recommend utilizing your shrewd mind against the infidels to your east and form the kingdom of Syria. Convert them to our glorious ways and the true faith then you will be in a position to maneuver into a strong Byzantium with a holy site under your control, soldiers under you command and strong family member allied to you. You might even command the respect of the patriarch for such a feet. As well as the support of the people much like the great Gaius Julius Caesar before you whom also conquered a kingdom before reforming the empire.

My duke, your instincts serve you well. Becoming the spymaster of the Empire would benefit you greatly, of course. But that road will take time. Meanwhile, invest in the duchy. A strong foundation is key for any great house. The resources will fuel your future plans.
Dismantling the Papal States would be an interesting goal in this series or uniting Christianity under Orthodoxy by taking over and converting Catholics.
Just one thing Duke. Do consider the consequences of your actions , by limiting the authority of your emperor not only you let your self loose but many others as well. And they maybe willing to sell their mothers and sisters to become an independent nation. Instead of having items of power like land and levies you might want to try and get the "how to use". Anything can be more efficient if known how to be used properly. I am a guest and a foreigner, the type that you like to kill and I don't loke your methods entirely , you are OVER USING your resources and your ways of doing things. Obfuscation and subterfuge is the name of the game here for Leon. His son may be different but this is Leon's choices. You're saying what not to do, but you're not really advising what should be done instead. Warring wouldn't have gained the former Komes a proper Doux title.
Indeed you are right great duke. So my advise for you to do is simple gain some trust with your overlord and ensure that other dukes or counts do not bring chaos and you really need some more talented people for your lands and your council. Have a good day.

I bought the game 2 days ago and had a fanaatic time on my first play through, so i started am ironman mode yesterday but was so bored i didn't even feel like playing anymore but literally just hearing your voice after having such a fun time with your Rus campain has inspired me to play again

My doux, while i have no doubt on your intellect, you should pay no heed about the refusal of the current count of antioch. The marshal would happily lead your troops into battle even if he refuses.
''Byzantines'' called themselves Romans, and they were Eastern Roman Empire that survived Western Roman destruction, It's a bit dumb they are forcefully called Byzantine Empire in games and books when historically they were never called like that.
My liege, I believe the best course of action at the moment would be to consolidate power over your new land in preparation to convert Antioch. Putting it under rule of a good trustworthy Greek, not some traitor to orthodoxy as is currently in power! Then develop your territory in preparation for the first major step in making your dynasty known to the world! A great crusade for Jerusalem! With your new found territory stretching into the Arabian peninsula you could be a great help in leading the charge. And while you yourself may not be of great interest in religion. As a good spymaster you should know it is ALWAYS good to have friends in the church. As this could come in quite handy in future en devours.
I may be a party pooper, but I think you have gotten cynical around the back foot. Being agnostic is when you question if the supernatural/divine is real. Cynical is when you often think people have a selfintrested motiv, no matter how good or generous an act they do.
I think you are confusing you're Basils in the opening, 867 is Basil the first, not Basil the second. Basil the first is not quite represented in the most accurate manner in CK3 though since he's got a martial focus whereas if you look at history intrigue would make far more sense. Basil the second was the military genius, though alot of his success can be put down to spamming Varangian guard.
On an unrelated note: Did you know that breaking up with Urraka in the Spanish storyline after killing the other brothers is slightly...err...not so healthy? She inherits after the last of her father's sons dies. I didn't mind...but allowing her to stay spymaster after breaking up with her when it was revealed that the player character killed off his one year old nephew (the brothers didn't get revealed) was...not very healthy. I did get her a genius lowborn husband in a matrilineal marriage right at the start as a dynastical breeding project, so I got an intelligent heir out of it, so it worked out after her oldest inbred son sadly died due to being treated by a 1 learning court physician that I spent a lot of money to switch out and then switch back to the 18 learning 3 star physician!
You do know what would happen in the old ways. If she have brother or other relative they would kill for shamining the family honour and even the god and godesses. Hera the godess of marriage and childbirth would not be pleased.
I'm not a fan of the new character models. Byzantines look too eastern and all the characters look the same. CK2 has much better differences between cultures religions.
Oh man this makes me think, is abduction a little busted? Theoretically you could just win any way for any thing by simply abducting the enemy leader like that.
hey I had a quick question. Your icons for prowess and education traits look different than mine. they seem to be on more vibrant colors whereas in my game all education traits are in gold. How did you get your game to look like that?

I'll do my best to adjust pronunciations but honestly I wouldn't be critical of someone who has not encountered modern day Greek much, much less older takes on the language. Even with the Anglicized name for the Emperor, the British and Americans have two pronunciations for Basil.

I think you are confusing you're Basils in the opening, 867 is Basil the first, not Basil the second. Basil the first is not quite represented in the most accurate manner in CK3 though since he's got a martial focus whereas if you look at history intrigue would make far more sense. Basil the second was the military genius, though alot of his success can be put down to spamming Varangian guard.
It's weird but welcome change seeing Georgian states survive. in CK2 they get swallowed in 30 years. :c

I didn't mind...but allowing her to stay spymaster after breaking up with her when it was revealed that the player character killed off his one year old nephew (the brothers didn't get revealed) was...not very healthy. I did get her a genius lowborn husband in a matrilineal marriage right at the start as a dynastical breeding project, so I got an intelligent heir out of it, so it worked out after her oldest inbred son sadly died due to being treated by a 1 learning court physician that I spent a lot of money to switch out and then switch back to the 18 learning 3 star physician!
I really hope they adress byzantium soon and make it non feudal, the empire isnt done justice at the current state of the game

I'm not a fan of the new character models. Byzantines look too eastern and all the characters look the same. CK2 has much better differences between cultures religions.

I'll do my best to adjust pronunciations but honestly I wouldn't be critical of someone who has not encountered modern day Greek much, much less older takes on the language. Even with the Anglicized name for the Emperor, the British and Americans have two pronunciations for Basil.
Also that said, I appreciate the guide! It is VERY different from some of the languages I've tried to learn how to pronounce.
