Yeah, this was a song about Ruby and her mother. This is absolutely one of my favorite songs from this series. I always get chills at the line “It’s your blood that’s red like roses.” Puts a whole new perspective on whenever Ruby uses her semblance. I love how this song gives us some insight into Ruby’s backstory and mindset too, since the show doesn’t delve into it much. I wish she had more songs. Feels like Weiss, Blake, and Yang all have way more. Also, #ThankYouCody for making this donation request. I was waiting for this reaction XD. Just got into RWBY very recently and been loving it a lot so far.
I feel like RLR2 is one of those RWBY that NOBODY dislikes. Everyone thinks it slaps. Everyone vibes with it. It ALWAYS hits hard. lol And that long pause and sigh after it finished just spoke volumes. Lyrically, instrumentally, it's beautiful. My favorite line out of the sea of treasures is, "I didn't have a choice; I did what I had to do. I made a sacrifice, but forced a bigger sacrifice on you." Yeah, Ruby's mom had to do this. She had to give up her life. But that forced a worse life on her daughter. Ugh.
So, yeah, it is about Ruby and her mom, Summer Rose. Info on Summer is sparse and scattered here and there through the series. Vol 8 actually gives a big clue stick to her ultimate fate. It was heart breaking.
This song has to be either my favorite or one of my favorites out of all of the volumes soundtracks if only because of how much it tells us A good amount of people (including me) come to the conclusion after listening to this that the cheerful personality we see of rwby is only a small part of her and may have originally only been an act to keep those around her (especially yang) from worrying while this stuff has actually been torturing her all along going as far as to constantly invade her dreams (line from red like Rose's part 1 "red like roses fills my dreams and leads me to the place you rest" and in part 2 "red like roses fills my head with dreams and finds me ever closer to the emptiness and sadness that has come to take the place of you" and considering we now know "it's your blood that's red like roses" well just look at those lines again) And you might think those were just her thoughts as a kid and shes talked about it and worked through it since but around halfway through volume 2 yang said something to the effect of "I think she was just to young to understand what happened" which from this song we know isnt true so yang has had no idea that this has been plaguing ruby all this time
"Don't be like me. Be Better" As a father, this song hits very hard because one of its themes is the legacy you leave for your children, and this sums it up so well.

I honestly thought that it was about Jeane and Pyrrha, but that makes so much more sense

this song is one off my favorites. It was played when Ruby killed the nevermore in vol. 1 ch. 8.
Casey Lee Williams did sing this song with her mom.

I'll do a more extensive comment layer when I have time but for now fun fact: this song is sung by the main singer of the series and her mother
"Don't be like me. Be Better"
As a father, this song hits very hard because one of its themes is the legacy you leave for your children, and this sums it up so well.
This is best RLR2 reaction. A lot of people don't look on lyrics
Also she was 15 when she sang this
This puts me sad thinking of how the series is going since some years ago
Amazing
