When I got divorced I bought a 38 foot ketch in San Francisco and sailed her to Baja, Mexico. This was the song I had playing on the stereo when I sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge. Evertime I hear it I think of the ex-wife and the sense of freedom of starting a new journey.
I watched a video where a guy did that. I am pretty sure he was sailing a ketch, solo for sure. I lost track of his channel as he didn't post much. I wonder if it was you?
Best three-part harmonies in rock. Wonderful song - The line "we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do" hits me every time. The song feels personal for quite a few people here in New Zealand - he's describing a boat journey from the US (starting in Avalon, on California's Catalina Island) down to the south Pacific (past Papeete and the Marquesas in French Polynesia). The Southern Cross is a constellation only easily seen in the Southern Hemisphere - our equivalent of the north's Big Dipper. Its even on our national flag.
The Southern Cross are the Stars that are on our (New Zealand) flag and also the Australian flag and obviously a constellation in the sky above us so this song has a deeper meaning for us. I believe stills wrote it after his divorce and it's about finding himself and figuring out life's problems when you are at sea in an expanse that is bigger than life itself and the problems we face navigating it.
Yacht rock, lol. Nobody who made any of these songs popular had a yacht or called it yacht rock. Soft rock or folk rock, applies to some of these, but yacht rock implies only rich people, not a feeling of being taken away 😂
Steven Stills album "Manassas" was named after his boat. Crosby was onboard his schooner "Mayan" when he wrote the song "Woden Ships".. He owned Mayan for 4 decades. when his wife ws killed in a car crash he sailed Mayan from Florida to San Francisco via the Panama Canal. Crosby started sailing dingies as a kid in Santa Barbara. You may associate boats with "rich people" but I associate them with peace, freedom.,and adventure. When "sailing on a reach in a following sea" you are not thinking about your bank account.
You need not be rich to own and live on a sailboat, in fact quite the contrary is entirely possible. You do need to be willing to work hard while living a minimalist lifestyle, which most probably won't enjoy long term. The payoff...you won't enjoy the same freedom anywhere else on this planet and for some there is an instinctive appeal to experiencing our natural world while connecting with the the wind. I should also note, while the lifestyle can be intoxicating the seas abide no excuse, meting only consequence.

Hi guys, I built fishing boats and worked on the ocean as a fisherman and lobsterman. There are a lot of references in this song that might not make sense to people who have never sailed or been around the culture of the sea. Like a "reach", a "following sea", "the trades", " The Marquesas", "midnight watch", "all my flags are a-flying" etc. The name itself is a reference to "The Southern Cross" which is a star constellation used for navigation below the equator, where you can't see the North Star. It really is a beautiful song that uses those references to tell and build up an emotional story. It seems idyllic and romantic to think of sailing as only freedom but there is a lot of loneliness, sometimes gripping fear, and time to think about regrets and happiness, who we are, set in the enormous sea of the universe, which is spiritual..
@@liamoconnor2429 I do love this song. I bring the references up because they are setting a tableau for the emotional crux of the song that I would like people to grasp..
The SOUTHERN CROSS is a Constellation in the Southern Hemisphere. Even though it is the smallest of 88 Constellations, it is the most famous and recognizable Constellation in the Southern Hemisphere. This song, on Large Speaker will blow you away.

First heard this as a 14 year old. I knew how beautiful this was even back then. I'm loving your journey with this genre. We always called it soft rock, I don't know exactly when the term yacht rock came about, but in my mind they're not the same. Example: KC And The Sunshine Band is definitely not soft rock but considered yacht rock. Same could be said about Steely Dan. And many other bands. Loving this journey with y'all ❤
David Crosby owned a huge sailboat when this song was written and the Southern cross is referring to a star constellation that is only visible South of the equator sailors used it for navigation for centuries.
Actually that's impossible. That song came out in 1980. Plus, as a big Ambrosia fan I would recommend the classic Holdin on to Yesterday, Time Waits for No One, and even How Much I Feel before that one.
I consider this song to be a guilty pleasure...everyone knows it...but few will admit they really like it...LOL. @@IslaSkye123 I found this: The term yacht rock was coined in 2005 by the makers of the online video series Yacht Rock, who connected the music with the popular Southern Californian leisure activity of boating.

Really great song, awesome reaction! I thought of another group that might fit this genre, Pablo Cruise and their songs, "Ocean Breeze", and "Island Woman".
As I said in your Steely Dan Hey 19 reaction, "Yacht Rock" is a made up long after the fact term created by an early internet parody in the 2000s. It was a derogatory term applied to soft lite rock songs. Back in the 70s and 80s when most of these songs were created, there was NO SUCH GENRE CALLED YACHT ROCK. Having said that, IF YACHT ROCK WAS A REAL GENRE, this actually would make sense as a "Yacht Rock" tune. Its actually about going recreational sailing, taking a trip on a boat. So this is one of the few songs called "Yacht Rock" that logically fits the made up silliness. CSN were great writers and harmony singers, and they captured the feel and language of sailing the seas. Btw, the "Southern Cross" is the prominent star formation you see most prominently in the Southern Hemisphere, and actually points to the North Star. Thus, recognizing the Southern Cross was essential to navigating a boat at night. Hence, the name and reference.
Exactly. I especially bristle when I hear the made up after the fact term applied to Steely Dan, which is sophisticated sometimes very complex Jazz Fusion Funk. I highly doubt if someone would run up to Donald Fagen and say "You guys were a great Yacht Rock band" he'd be overjoyed. Fagen's heroes were Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Dave Brubeck etc, Jazz Legends. And I doubt if a Jewish guy like Fagen who grew up in Jersey and Becker from Queens who were anti establishment hippy English majors in the late 60s at a small liberal arts college were big "Yacht" guys, lol.

The best "yacht rock" song is "Rio" by Duran Duran, in my humble opinion. ;0)-~
I always called this stoner rock .Take a puff and sit back and float with the music. Yacht rocksounds moreof rich people not the common people that these artist are aiming at
Hahahhaah.... what the industry has classified as "Stoner Rock " is waaaay different than this.
@@TheAdventuresofTNTwell that's how I enjoyed it when it first came out
Yacht rock is a made up term from 2004 I don't agree with this classification of music
I disagree with putting every singer and group into a niche. Music is too creative to have that done to it.
Unfortunately, the industry has done this to help the audience find artist with a similar music styles. And yes, I agree, it puts creatives musicians in a box because they become limited in scope in the style of music they can produce.
AMBROSIA...HOLDING ON TO YESTERDAY...its YACHT ROCK
FANTASTIC SONG, A CLASSIC. NOT "YACHT ROCK".
@@kbrewski1 more soft rock...lets try BOAT DRINKS by Jimmy Buffett
@c.h.62
Lol. Why not go with the obvious>Margaritaville? Pretty much the ultimate Yacht Rock tune if such a genre existed.
Please do a Night Rangers song, Goodbye
Look in the 70s there was soft rock an inbetween was rock the harder stuff was hard rock no such thing as yacht rock get things right .
If you are not sure if its Y.R. ...listen to XM 311 :)
They are part of the problem.
Who in the He** named that and what does it mean?? ♠Mr.G..
I've been doing CO UN. T. R. Y country music, yeah, it's so wonderful. Douglas Wyoming WO AMA N sayinging the country songs sleeper. Super sexy songs like that could be a sexy supermodel. A sexy secret supermodel for victoria accept her singing country song
Add this song to your list. It involves paddle boats near New Orleans so it qualifies, doesn't it? It's a masterpiece by The Doobie Brothers prior to Michael McDonald joining, my favorite era! "Black Water" th-cam.com/video/RsP3rFJJk1Y/w-d-xo.html
Nope, paddling a canoe on a river stretches it to even more absurdity.
