Cybertruck has a software bug that when the drive gets full it stops. It does not overwrite as of today 4.11.24. Mine does the same thing.
Yes I seen that recently. My advice is to always check that it is recording before going anywhere

💯 only reason that I didn't was in the past when an accident has occurred the police has always told me that if the damage is "minor" and there are no injuries that they don't involved. I'll call moving forward regardless
Probably it depends on what state, here in Indiana, based from my experience, their police report carries some weight when regards to insurance claims. By the way, pretty sure Hanshaw or temu will have a wireless dash cam you can place anywhere in your CT that can continously record without any gaps

I've been in 3 other very similar experiences in a model 3 over the past 8 months. I would highly recommend if this ever happens to anyone when you don't have dashcam footage of the incident, still file a claim with your own insurance company. Filing a claim with your own insurance does not admit fault, it simply gives your insurance all of the information needed. Give them a highly detailed and accurate recount of the events. At this point, it then becomes their job to determine who is at fault. Your insurance company doesn't WANT to pay for the damages. They will FIGHT the other driver's insurance company and prove it was their fault on your behalf.
If you're ever in an accident, get a photo of the other person's license, insurance card, and vehicle (as many as possible, make sure you get their plates) and their phone number (verify they gave you their current insurance, and verify they gave you a real phone number before leaving) and then leave as soon as possible. If you feel it is necessary, call the police (do this if they dont speak english or whatever language you speak, or for other reasons).

A note on Tesla dashcam: I had an incident in our MY where a driver going in the opposite direction threw a cup/drink at my car. I turned around and while trying to catch up to him, saw that the dashcam missed the small time fragment when the drink was thrown. Apparently, the way this system breaks up video clips as it's recording, you could lose a second or two of video between clip N and clip N+1. This is not how most dashcams or video surveillance systems operate. They overlap footage of the adjacent files to ensure nothing is lost.
The lesion is take Tesla dashcam with a grain of salt. Depending on the situation, it may or may not capture what happened. Tesla definitely needs to make more reliable.

Great video and very informative. More damage on your truck if not for the stainless steel side panels. Very lucky. You already saved quite a bit of money by not paying for side panel body work which can be quite expensive like in the multi-thousand dollars. Cybertruck stainless steel exoskeleton for the win. Most of your cost is in the wrap.

@@Butter_EV I don't see how it's better than one on the screen (I also own one, so I have experience with it). Just a different place to look, no more difficult than looking up (and away from the road). Best to just remove the physical mirror then you'll quickly retrain.
Just an FYI, Dashcam footage is not only recorded on the USB but also Encoded into the car. If needed and a Law Enforcement officer requests it, tesla and only tesla can retrieve the footage from the vehicle.
I didn’t know that law enforcement could do that. I called Tesla and they said that they do not keep any footage in the cloud

As a lawyer myself, you got the part about it not being a big enough claim but the second part was not quite why… it’s because lawyers would lose money on such a case with their time. In cases like yours, it is better to get a paralegal. They argue more of these claims and their hourly rate is lower and require less resources. It’s beneficial to you that way too. It’s not about slam dunk chances… we would rather have a challenge and win than an easy win
I appreciate you commenting and providing some insight. I just didn’t like how the law offices that I spoke to wouldn’t even give my case a proper look. They dismissed it as soon as I said that I wasn’t injured and didn’t have dash cam footage. If I would’ve said that I had back pain they would’ve been all over that. And that isn’t because they want a challenge, it’s because there’s more money involved

Hey Eric another great video. I’ve had my Cybertruck for 2 weeks now. The mirror is frustrating for sure, so I thought about a video I saw where the owner removed his mirror, and showed how easy it was, and it has a little door that snaps shut like it was never there. Thinking about that, I’ve concluded along with many others that the intent is to remove the mirror, but Tesla can’t tell us this because of regulations. It looks totally finished without the mirror, and that’s also why the mirror is the cheapest looking flimsy thing that is possible. So I removed mine. And now I don’t even think of looking up there. It took a couple of days for my brain to ignore it. I really recommend taking that thing off. I now only look at the screen automatically.

If you do get a video mirror, the one thing I would recommend paying attention to is whether you find yourself looking in 2 spots, just like you are now. That’s why I decided to remove it, because I couldn’t stop from looking in both places. I guess you could always turn the one off on the display. But I tell you the display works great, but your brain will always go up to that upper mirror as long as it’s there. But when it’s gone, it won’t. Pavlov’s dog.
Rear view camera is very low resolution. 1st mod I am waiting for is a digital rear camera with HD camera.
The amazing thing is that you didn’t have to go to a body shop. And Tesla service fixed it all!

I’m not sure if you’ve seen the review of the Chevy electric truck by JerryRigEverything. I don’t know if I would buy that truck (I have a Cybertruck reservation), however, that truck has every feature that I wish the Cybertruck had. Range, folding mid gate, rear view camera mirror, even a heads up display. Sigh.
I don’t understand why they didn’t add these things in the CT. Doubt it would’ve increased the cost of the truck by more than $1,000
I'm surprised you didn't try to grab all the dashcam footage of people walking around the truck. I did that and found it was having issues recording new stuff after some time.

Been down the exact same situation with at the time a Model S. Should’ve called the police, dash cam didn’t work, was her fault. They first accepted responsibility of the accident, then denied it.
I didn’t want to go through my insurance at all, but I have State Farm on the East Coast much cheaper than Tesla. I have a local agent and she’s more than willing to talk to me anytime of the day.

Glad you got everything sorted out. My tip for you in the future is if you’re ever in an accident and you are speaking to the insurance company who should be at fault and pay for it. You never tell them there are no injuries. The reason for that is when your body goes into shock sometimes you can’t feel things right away. You wake up two days later you’re in pain. Also, your son was in the car. He could’ve woken up two days later and had been in pain never ever ever. Tell the insurance company how you are feeling. Even if they ask you, if you’re having a great day, you don’t answer that question because they will actually use that against you

I don't know if its different in California, but always contact your insurance first, give them the info, specifically the other driver's insurance info and let them fight it out. Calling their insurance first to file a claim, obviously their insurance will be on their driver's side.

You got off cheap for less than $1000. I bet the Audi cost $5-7000 for the front fascia, front fender and wheel well trim, plus paint and incidentals.
Open the tonneau cover and compare the rear view mirror image to the camera view image . I bet you have better view of driver behind you in the mirror than you would in the camera. I feel the perspective of the camera is not the same as the mirror. Now imagine the camera displayed in the mirror. That isn't going to be good.
The majority of my costs was due to the wrap otherwise this was an extremely cheap fix. This is a testament to how the CT is engineered with its “exoskeleton” and stainless steel. This eliminated the need for dent or paint repair.
I really wish they put the rear camera screen in the rear view mirror. Hope there’s a solution for this in the near future.

In US it's all made for the money to flow.. Insurances, lawyers.. Etc.
In my country our full auto insurances cover are "fixy car no matter what"..as long I am not DUI.. I could even be at fault myself.. Hit the car while parking for example. They just fix it and if there's a 3rd party, they deal with their insurance company themselves.
I US you just feed lawyers and insurance companies.. Same with Healthcare insurance.

@@Butter_EV Bulgaria. Eastern EU country. My full Tesla 3 insurance is worth around 2.5k USD/year and that covers everything that could happen. Thats voluntary insurance. The mandatory one is about 250 usd/year and covers my liability against damage to others (people/property) if it's my fault.
In all cases lawyers are never involved.
The Tesla software across all models should be changed to very prominently warn anytime it is not recording. not in a sitting screen somewhere, but prominently in large red type on the main screen.

Sorry to hear about your accident and your experience with State Farm. I have one question. Since you really didn't get any help from Tesla insurance, are you considering leaving Tesla insurance and going elsewhere to insure your Cybertruck?

FYI, all insurance primary objective is to find someone else to pay.
Your experience is normal and similar to every experience I have had where fault is not %1000 obvious or there was witnesses.
Best thing to do is to just file a claim with your insurance if its major damage, or shake your fist in the air and move on.
The very best thing is like you said eary on, try not to get in any accidents. Not only for the chance of injury but also for sanity.
Also that cost is crazy low. I had a similar situation in an 84 Camaro back in 1999 and got paid $3,200 from the other party.
Not having to replace 2 doors and repair any of the door pillers is crazy cost saving.
Really goes to show that “exoskeleton” and stainless steel really is strong and better than a traditional vehicles setup

I personally don't like looking up there at the mirror. I'm so used to the blindspot cameras, that looking up and to the sides seems like wasted split seconds that could prevent the accident.

@Butter_EV What I do wish is that they added a panoramic view of the blindspot cameras with the rearview as one wideview across the top of the screen, so you can see it all at once.

@Butter_EV The blindspot cameras is one of my favorite features of Teslas before they added steer by wire. Haha Tying all the rear facing cameras together into one would be amazing. Don't need the full vertical, just enough to see if something is nearby.

Tesla insurance is a slow response insurance is to your advantage. State Farm will already pay out the claim, before Tesla comes to work.

Ok, some friendly advice from a professional driver. Always have the police come out and make a report. Video or no video that police report carries a lot more weight than you think, especially if the other person leaves the scene of the accident. The second most important thing is have a video of the accident. While I don't own a cybertruck I do have video cameras in each of my vehicles. Third look for any public transportation vehicle behind you that might have witnessed the accident and get the vehicle number. Most public transportation have at least 4 cameras recording everything that happens around their vehicle, this video can be subpoenaed as evidence. BTW how much did it cost to fix the tesla cybertruck? Was the $942 just the wrap with taxes? I am interested in buying one but I am unsure of the cost of ownership. Thanks for your reports and keep up the great work.

I decided to allow them to deny my claim and pay for everything out of pocket in order to speed up the process, maintain my sanity and keep the accident off of the carfax

Conclusions:
- For a little less $1000 dollars, it did not even pay to try and go though your own insurance. Don't know what your deductible is, but it would not have been worth the bother to go through them.
- Tesla insurance is useless. Other companies would have helped you out even if it just a few questions of what to do.
- $100K and they couldn't put a video screen in the rear view mirror? Instead they find the cheapest thing they could put in and is useless most of the time.
- Should have called the police and have them write a report. Never trust the other side when they say you can work it out with them.
- That is exactly why I decided to avoid dealing with insurance and just pay out of pocket. Maintained my sanity
- I was extremely disappointed in Tesla insurance

Yes communication through the app with Tesla insurance would be a pain. But if you had dashcam footage and/or just submitted a claim, I suspect the process would have gone smoother. I always hear “just submit the claim and let the insurance companies figure it out, that’s their job.”
Not having the dash cam footage was a huge letdown but looking back I’m happy I didn’t go through insurance
File with your insurance & give them all your accident information. They will deal with the other person’s insurance to determine who is at fault.

Glad you said you know why Tesla is the lowest. My beast is $200/month. 1.5 hour on hold just to buy insurance with them. State Farm said they're too embarrassed to give me a quote. My SF agent said no way she could beat Tesla even with all the other packages we have with SF already. Let us know who you go with. I'm also looking to swap.

it's literally a fender bender...i can't imagine there's an attorney on earth who would take that case and it would cost you more in legal fees than your out of pocket expenses anyway.
Damage wise it wasn’t a big deal but since we were blaming each other and I had evidence and she didn’t you would think an attorney would take the case and sue them for wasting our time. Small $ could get bigger

I’m confused as to why you didn’t call police when the accident happened? That’s the first thing you do so they can right a report and determine who is at fault on the scene. I’ve never heard of someone having any kind of traffic accident accident and not calling the police.
So I’ve called the police in previous accidents and when they show up they always ask if anyone is injured. If the answer is no and the cars aren’t totaled they leave and say for us to handle it ourselves 🤷🏻♂️ so I figured the same here. I’ll be calling for any future accidents and will demand an accident report. Thanks for the comment and suggestion
Instead of using Tesla insurance are you able to use other insurance companies like State Farm, Allstate ETC ?
My previous insurance company was State Farm but they wanted triple the premium of Tesla Insurance 😬

Never ever let anyone leave an accident without a police report. People lie all the time after the fact. Yeah, your cameras not recording was unfortunate, and a big lesson for everyone to always check them and make sure they're always working regardless of the Tesla model, but always get a report. Most cars don't have cameras and that's how it has always been done.
And attorneys, like autodealers, are all leaches. They're there to make money and nothing else. If they can't make money from you, they don't want to hear from you. That's why they're the top 2 most hated groups by Americans.

YES! The camera’s display should be in the mirror like on the RAV4 for years. But, the woman still would have hit you! YES, The tesla camera should over write. Why doesn’t the dash cam work properly? Doesn’t Tesla want to check?

Silverado has much more range and regular rear window and also a video rear mirror. The coefficient of drag isn't the greatest on cybertruck. The tonneaux isn't helping much. Needs a bigger battery

$100,000 vehicle and Tesla got cheap and did not put a video screen in the rear view mirror as other manufactures have figured out a long time ago. Instead they put in the cheapest mirror they could find and is totally useless with the cover down.

Hummm $972, I think it was much more than that. The time you spent making calls, figuring out how to proceed, taking vehicle into shops and the in between are more than $900 alone.

Yes you argued and won that argument by reasoning but next time call the police, even if you have indisputable video evidence a police report carries just as much weight. I see a lot of different videos about the cybertruck and you are the first to mention the mirror issue. I understand this is a similar issue with my model Y and although there is aftermarket mirror/camera, it should be from factory. My order is years away but hopefully an alternative is made for the mirrors lack of visibility. Either way thank you for posting such details
